And stop begging for updates to made up rubbish?

I think they didn’t notice that often a thread just runs and runs when it’s obviously BS, and posters are just having fun with the OP.

Yeah, I can't be the only one who's enjoyed poking the flames when something didn't ring true?!

The problem is that ‘Fesshole’ is full of made up shit too.
So how can you ever be sure that this particular post is real? You dont either.

Personally I prefer to enjoy MN, take the good bits (and there are many), avoid getting too involved in anything, use the fun, make myself feel good for being able to get support when I can. And if that poster was posting shit? I still haven’t lost anything iyswim

Crikeyalmighty · 23/08/2022 11:55

I think they are often easy to tell as the story gets changed/drip fed to fit the narrative of questions/clarification

Topgub · 23/08/2022 12:03

The other problem is that for every fake story there is some poor person living in awful circumstances most of us would rather were fake.

Should I go to A+E or just sit here with my leg hanging off and the femoral artery spurting blood. I have tried a tourniquet but DH couldn't do it, he fainted

LTB, obviously.

Spa day.

Spa day.

Indeed, but only after emptying the joint bank account to pay for it.

Exactly. Anonymous confessions is just as much an invitation for made up nonsense as AIBU.
I do think the ghouls who post for updates are weird but if that's what they want to do then so what.

He's such an amateur.

Winding up our friends on Reddit is far better.

PoseyFlump · 23/08/2022 12:41

What do posters mean by troll hunting is not allowed? Does that mean you can't say when you think a thread is made up?

There's been loads of deleted threads recently.

MiauzenKatzenjammer · 23/08/2022 12:44

GnomeDePlume · 22/08/2022 22:31

Dear oh dear, cant you just tie the washing line round it (after flicking off spiders) and give it a quick dab of Zoflora?

What makes you think you need to bother the NHS with something so trivial. It's on its knees you know (much like you I expect).

You should already have put the leg in the freezer for batch cooking, what with the rising cost of living and all.

thecatsthecats · 23/08/2022 12:56

redskyatnight · 22/08/2022 20:44

Am I the only one that doesn't necessarily care if they are made up or not? They are quite often entertaining or though provoking, and if I'm not interested I'll move on past.

Exactly.

Better than tedious threads where people yip on about laundry or cooking.

DustinsHat · 23/08/2022 13:46

The irony is that quite a lot of Fesshole submissions are also obvious lies.

SplendidUtterly · 23/08/2022 14:06

TheWeeDonkey · 22/08/2022 21:11

Ah, that explains pizzagate! Not the Pizzagate obviously, but the current AIBU pizzagate.

Oh yes pizzagate is still going strong!

I think that mumsnet is used by the government as a 'test the nation's thoughts on topics' exercise. So eg an NHS question posted is likely to be a fishing exercise to gauge the temperature, with the OP as a westminister hack coming up with a question or event. Much like at the minute. I worked in a government sponsored job and in my induction was told that 'mumsnet' was a VERY powerful organisation and kind of not to be messed with. 👽

Defo. I like to respond to those threads in the hope that my opinion will get fed back to whoever is in charge. Unlikely I know, but it keeps me happy.

You can say, but not on the thread itself. You use the 'report' function and tell MNHQ. They will then 'look behind the scenes' as it were, and delete as appropriate.

I wouldn't go to A&E for something that mild.

PoseyFlump · 23/08/2022 22:41

Thanks @Surtsey I guess that prevents offending someone who is genuine from having a load of posters accuse them directly.

GnomeDePlume · 23/08/2022 23:18

Are the gardening threads made up and it's all pictures of Monty Don's back garden pinched off the Gardener's World back issues?

Now I am shaking and crying.

PoseyFlump · 23/08/2022 23:23

@GnomeDePlume I'm currently doing a reverse look up on a photo of a large aubergine to see if it belongs to monty don 🍆

I'm as cynical as anyone, but I do remember a thread a few years ago (and I'm sure others will too) when the poster said her DH hadn't come home and was missing all night. She couldn't get hold of him. Like many other threads in the same vein, it got more and more dramatic, and ultimately for all concerned, the end was tragically true. It was on their local news. Threads like that one often seem far-fetched, but since then I have always given posts like that the benefit of the doubt until proven otherwise. So I would never call 'troll' on a thread like that, because you never know.

An image search on Monty Don's giant aubergine will be raising eyebrows at GCHQ (or whoever it is who monitors all our internet activity).

PoseyFlump · 24/08/2022 18:39

@Surtsey that's very sad and a good reminder to give the benefit of the doubt. I truly believe that most threads on here are genuine.

@GnomeDePlume I never thought of that! Confused I'm off to hide in the tin foil-lined cupboard under the stairs!

Let’s face it, you’re not mumsnetting properly unless you’ve been sobbing and shaking.
