But what is the point of telling people that you don't think a thread is true?

Do you sit in the cinema announcing that the story of the film is made up?

On any given thread some people have encountered similar and are inclined to believe it, some doubt it's true or all true but are prepared to suspend their disbelief because they are enjoying the story. And then the joysponges turn up and express their opinion that it's not true. Why would you think that anyone who is just enjoying the thread could care less whether or not some random thinks it's not true?

PoseyFlump · 24/08/2022 20:34

@amicissimma I agree mostly as long as the thread is just about their own personal shit. I wouldn't agree if it's about spreading misinformation like, say, vaccines are made from custard.

Some of the Covid threads were awful. Page after page of scaremongering old cobblers.

PoseyFlump · 24/08/2022 20:42

Yeah @Sparklingbrook and it's easy to forget what a scary, shitty situation it was back then when you didn't know quite what to believe.

This was well into the pandemic. At the start nobody knew what was going on but when things calmed down a bit a few posters decided that things were a bit too calm and had a bit of a crusade. They got banned in the end IIRC.

Well, of course, if people are posting total untruths as 'facts', they need to be challenged. But the evidence for their inaccuracy should be presented so that readers can see the problem for themselves. Eg during Covid it was easy enough to link to government guidelines where people were claiming we could or couldn't do such-and-such.

But it really doesn't matter if the 'stories' are fact or fiction. Enjoy or move on.

True. So we're kinda saying for entertainment value it's not such a big deal unless it crosses a moral line.

In fairness, there were faults on both sides during Covid. As well as the scaremongering there were also posters sneering at the very idea of precautions and acting as if not being encouraged to holiday abroad was an abuse of their human rights.

Anyhow, I imagine lots of threads on here are made up, especially the long increasingly dramatic sagas. Who cares really as long as they're entertaining, well written and ultimately harmless?
