What makes a women look frumpy

Wherecanitbe · 20/08/2022 14:30

I am considering an overhaul of what I wear and my hairstyle. I am feeling a bit down and frumpy at the moment so thought this would be a positive change.

My overhaul is not going to be a drastic change , I cannot afford to purchase a whole new wardrobe of clothes, shoes and accessories. So please could you give me your items of clothing and / or hairstyles that in your opinion makes a women look frumpy.

This post is not meant to be offensive in anyway, I believe a person should wear whatever they wish regardless of whether another person thinks it's frumpy.

We now seem to be confusing weird fashion trends from the past with frumpy clothes!
I made a rara skirt in the 80’s but didn’t have quite enough fabric so it ended up looking really weird!
I’m never going to consciously look frumpy, that’s my new mantra as I approach the day when I finally get my state pension. For my own self esteem nobody else’s though.
By the way, there is often a 25% discount in that non frumpy/frumpy shop Seasalt, teachers, nhs etc.

Yes use that often especially when 35%

Seasalt seem an ethical brand

I'm sure they were in Porth Leven circa 2007 and a very small concern

Knittingnanny2 · 21/08/2022 16:55

@woodhill yes! Early 80’s as I have an unfortunate photo of me with a baby and toddler in a playground with the unfortunate ra ra skirt on.
This thread has reminded me that a few weeks ago I was looking at photos with youngest son 1990 version and he said I look younger now than in 1990!
So I’m adding tight all over curly perms to the frumpy definition.

woodhill · 21/08/2022 16:58

Oh yes had many perms, hideous😀

I don’t think a lot of us on here will ever feel truly frumpy again.

We are all our own little triumphs and disasters and we have got the orbs to rock the so called frump with panache.

Wearing anything with a bit of bollocks to you will make it ok.
You will know I’m watching Jo and Al through tears and smiles and it is all about how you feel - not just what you have on.

¡Ole! Ye bstards 💃😘

The op asking for inspiration to make her feel better about herself and a load of ‘offended’ people pile in! It’s so boring when every thread turns into this sort of crap! If your so easily offended by the word frumpy skip the thread! Frumpy isn’t a nice word but it does describe a certain look -hiding your body by wearing uninteresting clothes is how I would describe frumpy. If your overweight you may well want to disappear into obscurity so that’s obviously why people are saying they felt frumpy being overweight. No one said every overweight person is frumpy. Op the best way to feel better about you is focus on the parts of yourself that you like and dress in well fitting items that you like. Not very helpful but neither are half the comments on here.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 21/08/2022 17:09

I will say that satin looking Olivia NJ tight trousers were all the rage in our posh boutique. No one in our circle could afford them.

They came in red, black, yellow, green and hot pink.

The pair I coveted was shiny Tory blue.

They would have made my legs look like giant varicose veins.

woodhill · 21/08/2022 17:15

I had looser satin trousers in black and a rouched neck blouse

I remember a friend wearing red Shiney ones at the disco party

Maireas · 21/08/2022 17:18

giant varicose veins 😂🤣
Ah, come on now, Sheldon - you could have bought the red ones?
You'd probably be able to get a pair now and wear them under your kaftan.
Remember your frumpy Kipling bag, though.

I think there was a lot of flammable fabric.

I think Therese Coffey & Liz Truss look very frumpy.

Seasalt is a Frump shop!

White Stuff is the worst.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/08/2022 18:07

Whitestuff makes my soul die a bit.

I just googled Therese Coffey images. I think she needs:

  • properly measuring for a bra

  • some tops that have a bit more shape/structure to them

  • to lose the scarves

sunglassesonthetable · 21/08/2022 18:14

The good bra is a reoccurring theme on here.

Maireas · 21/08/2022 18:14

I agree - a good bra would help and some more tailored clothes. Maybe a jersey jacket which gives more movement.
She has lovely thick hair though - it just needs a bit of shaping.

Maireas · 21/08/2022 18:16

Liz Truss has recently adopted the monochrome look, which is actually a good idea because it seems less fussy than different designs and colours.
She loves her Claire's Accessories, though! Again, she has nice hair and I think she's had a better cut recently.

Maireas · 21/08/2022 18:17

Yes, it's a good foundation, isn't it?

sunglassesonthetable · 21/08/2022 18:20

I think Angela Merkel and Nicola Sturgeon dress well. They seem the have adopted a good working no-think uniform. Also Theresa May who seems to actually enjoy clothes.

Maireas · 21/08/2022 18:22

I think you're right, there's a work uniform. I like the fact that Teresa May tries out different looks, and chooses different cuts and colours. She has some great, bold jewellery.

sunglassesonthetable · 21/08/2022 18:41

I'd add Janet Yellen as a literal masterclass in white hair and looking amazing.

sunglassesonthetable · 21/08/2022 18:44

She once lent my brother a pen from inside a mahoosive Birkin esque bag. Brother couldn't specify for sure if it was a Birkin.

Maireas · 21/08/2022 19:05

Janet Yellin's hair is lovely. I also like that she chooses those strong purply blue colours, they really suit her. I think the temptation when your hair goes grey/white is to go for paler shades.

sunglassesonthetable · 21/08/2022 19:09

yes @Maireas I love the confidence.

littlebird13 · 21/08/2022 19:12

I can't say I've ever looked at another person and thought they looked grumpy. But I have felt it myself. I'm not overweight but have had two children in 5 years which has taken its toll and certain things don't look as good as what they used to.

It's how you feel in yourself. Wear what makes you feel good. Try show some of shape by wearing something fitted rather than oversized.

I've just done a search on OP. Lots of threads she's started and then not appeared on again. Just saying.

Yes, but in this instance that's OK , because it's been a really interesting thread.
