What makes a women look frumpy

Wherecanitbe · 20/08/2022 14:30

I am considering an overhaul of what I wear and my hairstyle. I am feeling a bit down and frumpy at the moment so thought this would be a positive change.

My overhaul is not going to be a drastic change , I cannot afford to purchase a whole new wardrobe of clothes, shoes and accessories. So please could you give me your items of clothing and / or hairstyles that in your opinion makes a women look frumpy.

This post is not meant to be offensive in anyway, I believe a person should wear whatever they wish regardless of whether another person thinks it's frumpy.

I buy straight from the catwalks of Paris and Milan. I'm so lucky that I'm a sample size

You and me both! My dressmaker takes the seams in, though. The sample sizes are huge, I find 😉

Glasses definitely are not frumpy by definition. Very stylish people wear them. Not everyone can wear contacts or have lasik surgery- and why would you want to when there are fabulous glasses to wear?

I loved the stuck in a jumpsuit thread. ☺️

I don’t think I commented but I certainly commiserated and I made sure the ones I bought thereafter could stretch over the arse end of a cow. (Apt)

I’ll let professional jumpsuit wearers have the linen ones. I’d never get out of them in time and would run the risk of a mishap - unless they came with an olden days grandad flap on the gusset.

Maireas · 21/08/2022 15:55

I cannot manage jumpsuits - I'm always fearful of loo situations where part of it drops in the pan or drags on the floor.

I love Seasalt. Except for the time I got stuck in a linen jumpsuit.

I wear it a lot, once I figured out how to get out of it. Beautiful raspberry colour.

Yes the lovely seasalt jumpsuits. I bought one after reading that thread😀

At least the stuff is good quality and washes well. Also you can buy cotton.

Knittingnanny2 · 21/08/2022 15:56

@Maireas Ive got 5……it’s my winter uniform!!!
I’ve got a seasalt coat, I wouldn’t say it’s height of fashion but it’s not what could be described as frumpy surely?

Go for it 👍

Snap 😂

After having a body (remember those from the 90s?) accident at a festival 🙈

Maireas · 21/08/2022 16:04

Oh lord, I remember bodies!
I once said goodbye to my sister after an enjoyable evening in the West End, only to notice as she walked away that the back flap was hanging out of her trousers ☹️

SoupDragon · 21/08/2022 16:08

DD (16) has some "bodies" 😂

Blossomtoes · 21/08/2022 16:13

Of all the stupid bloody fashions “bodies” have be right up there. Especially the ones that fastened with press studs right in the middle of your fanny. They must have been designed by a man.

I was just about to say this!

I had bodies as a skinny teen in the 80s. They were uncomfortable then - I can't begin to imagine what they'd feel like on a 50 something size 14 person, who lives in M&S Flexifit pants.

Maireas · 21/08/2022 16:20

M&S Flexifit 😂😂😂! Love it.
I remember wearing a Ra Ra skirt (no laughing at the back) and getting the ruffles caught up in the exit gate at a tube station and having to be cut free.
My Success With Fashion will not be the title of my autobiography.

Blossomtoes · 21/08/2022 16:25

I never wore a rara skirt, having reduced the entire changing room in Miss Selfridge to tears of laughter just trying one on. I looked absurd.

Maireas · 21/08/2022 16:27

Oh, I probably looked absurd as well. But I was 21 and already had huge huge hoop earrings, pixie boots and a silver effect bomber jacket, so it was really too late anyway.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/08/2022 16:28

@Maireas 😂

I remember getting a Ra-Ra skirt (white with blue polka dots). I thought I was the bee's knees.

AuntMasha · 21/08/2022 16:28

The girl who bullied my sister (1980s) embarrassed herself at a party when she got drunk, fell over and got covered in mud, whilst wearing a puffball skirt. We did laugh.

(I’ve committed every frump sin listed on this thread, I’m afraid..)

Maireas · 21/08/2022 16:36

Puffball skirts.
I bloomin loved mine. I had tights with stars on, which I believed erroneously to add to the look.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 21/08/2022 16:49

My rara skirt would not have been amiss as part of the celebration for the so called ‘platty joobs’

Foe my sins, I see your starry tights and raise you ruffled sleeves and a pussy bow. Market special.

I looked like a poundies flamenco dancer.

Worn with crocodile pattern white kitten heels.

And not only that, 4 others had the same outfit and we all wore it the same night. Different shoes though.

All we needed was Angela Rippon and we’d have been a cert for Come Dancing.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 21/08/2022 16:51

I couldn’t have a puffball. It would have ended up like a wriggle skirt with my backside.

woodhill · 21/08/2022 16:51

Loved my rara skirts circa of 1982 I think

I was very slim

Knittingnanny2 · 21/08/2022 16:52

We now seem to be confusing weird fashion trends from the past with frumpy clothes!
I made a rara skirt in the 80’s but didn’t have quite enough fabric so it ended up looking really weird!
I’m never going to consciously look frumpy, that’s my new mantra as I approach the day when I finally get my state pension. For my own self esteem nobody else’s though.
By the way, there is often a 25% discount in that non frumpy/frumpy shop Seasalt, teachers, nhs etc.

Maireas · 21/08/2022 16:53

poundies flamenco dancer
😂😂😂

Maireas · 21/08/2022 16:54

The only fashion I would like back from the 80s is those lacey fingerless gloves. I have hands like Nosferatu and think wearing them again would frighten children less.
