What makes a women look frumpy

Wherecanitbe · 20/08/2022 14:30

I am considering an overhaul of what I wear and my hairstyle. I am feeling a bit down and frumpy at the moment so thought this would be a positive change.

My overhaul is not going to be a drastic change , I cannot afford to purchase a whole new wardrobe of clothes, shoes and accessories. So please could you give me your items of clothing and / or hairstyles that in your opinion makes a women look frumpy.

This post is not meant to be offensive in anyway, I believe a person should wear whatever they wish regardless of whether another person thinks it's frumpy.

A lot of young people wear glasses. Glasses aren't frumpy overall it depends on the style.

Well this thread is depressing. I have a layered bob, a matronly bosom and wear boot cut jeans. I am the epitome of frump.

Boot cut jeans have been back 'in' and I really enjoyed wearing slim flares in the spring as a change from skinnies.

Fatballs · 21/08/2022 14:51

I have this frump dress. I am away from home, otherwise I’d put it on and post up picture of how frumpy it looks on me.

Not!

. I shouldn't take it as gospel. I think you probably know if you look 'frumpy' not if strangers put it on here.

Somewhere earlier someone posted a link to pictures of a great looking woman with a very large bosom who looked fabulous in lots of different outfits.

Don’t leave your hair to go grey, get a decent haircut and colour it regularly. Look after your skin. Don’t wear glasses, get laser eye Surgury or wear lenses. Wear nice makeup and get some decent clothes. Don’t let yourself get fat.

Have you seen some of the funky glasses out there?! Loads of trendy folk wear specs.
And I can't believe you haven't seen anyone chic and stylish with grey hair.

sunglassesonthetable · 21/08/2022 13:27

Me too, @SheldonesqueTheBstard!
It's waterproof, board marker proof and I get get stuff in it for work. I save the chic clutch for evening wear!
However, I think we're committing a cardinal sin here -
being practical!

Tbh I think you're sort of arguing with yourselves now in agreement.

There has been very little 'advice' on this thread. 'here' doesn't really exist.

No. There have been many accusations that practical outfits and accessories are "frumpy".

sunglassesonthetable · 21/08/2022 15:08

Really. Didn't notice many.

Do you know… that is probably a big part of the misogynistic undertones to frumpy as a concept. How dare women be focused on practicality and dress for purpose rather than ornament. It’s why the concept never applies to men.

You're spot on. We have to be pretty, sexy and eternally young. Whatever and whenever.

Seasalt has some really very horrible things and some okay things. Their boots are really, really good.

Name me one shop where absolutely everything is the epitome of style.

Thank you Sunglassesontheable that's very kind of you and appreciated but I am in my late fifties now and there comes a time when you have to accept that you just don't look as good as you did when young! Your weight is distributed differently. Your posture isn't as good. Hair and teeth not as good generally. I do like to look nice and I try my best but I think there has to be a general acceptance that you make more effort for less return at my age 😄

However dds in their 20s like some things in seasalt

@WillPowerLite
have you any idea where her bag is from please

Maireas · 21/08/2022 15:24

@Mintchervilpurslane - it's a common feeling!
There has been some good advice on here, but it bears repeating - find your own style, and you'll develop confidence. You can be overweight, have grey hair etc, but if you choose styles and colours which flatter and suit, you'll look good.
I think so much of women's clothing now is flimsy and poorly made, it takes some effort to get good stuff!

Knittingnanny2 · 21/08/2022 15:29

Well now I realise that “ frumpy” means completely different things for different people! I suppose I should have know that at my age! 65.
I love the dresses in Seasalt, especially the cord ones with pockets.

FitYeDaeinYeMadRadge · 21/08/2022 15:35

I love Seasalt. Except for the time I got stuck in a linen jumpsuit.

I wear it a lot, once I figured out how to get out of it. Beautiful raspberry colour.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 21/08/2022 15:36

Bingo.

I have a Seasalt coat. It is waterproof. Bazinga.

I really think this thread has been created to watch women pick holes and turn on eachother.

There have been a few snarky folk on this thread (I know because I earn my b’stard) and some posts have been bordering on unnecessary. One stood out. I won’t be drawn on a name but if you want to make someone feel like shite when they have said nothing wrong or offensive to you? Did you think you were smart with your pithy sharp retort? Aye? Then this is for you 🖕🏼

Well done - mission accomplished.

We can’t have fat or grey or untrendy or older or spec wearing women feeling comfy in our own skin though can we? Put them all down with the frump title. Hold them down.

My granny used to say ‘ye cannae polish shite’.

As we get older we can’t all shine like we may have done 40 years ago. But we can give it a wee rub and do our best.

Indoor scarves
Cardigans
Patterned tops
bootcut jeans unless you’re 18 and built like a whippet
Breton tops
Tunics
Jeans worn with black leather ‘mum’ boots

There's me told.

OP, you can wear anything, it's the way you carry yourself.

Well, maybe not elastic waisted crimplene - but otherwise what can be one woman's frumpy is another woman's classic elegance. Pfffft to no cardigans.

Maireas · 21/08/2022 15:39

I think you've hit the nail on the head, @Knittingnanny2
I firmly believe that women of all ages and sizes can look fabulous. You can rock grey hair, glasses, a menopausal middle, post breast feeding boobs and still be stylish. But women lose confidence when these things happen, because there is so much currency in being young and slim.
Enjoy your Seasalt dress!

Where do you shop?

I buy straight from the catwalks of Paris and Milan. I'm so lucky that I'm a sample size

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/08/2022 15:42

I also have a Seasalt raincoat. I look like a troll in it, but it's great for going to the pub on a rainy autumn evening.
