What makes a women look frumpy

Wherecanitbe · 20/08/2022 14:30

I am considering an overhaul of what I wear and my hairstyle. I am feeling a bit down and frumpy at the moment so thought this would be a positive change.

My overhaul is not going to be a drastic change , I cannot afford to purchase a whole new wardrobe of clothes, shoes and accessories. So please could you give me your items of clothing and / or hairstyles that in your opinion makes a women look frumpy.

This post is not meant to be offensive in anyway, I believe a person should wear whatever they wish regardless of whether another person thinks it's frumpy.

I felt frumpy when I was overweight, nothing looked good on me and I looked older. However I have seen some overweight women look incredible so maybe it is more about shape/confidence than weight itself.

I have lost over 3 stone and feel confident wearing long summer dresses which I would never have worn 2 years ago. I wore an oversized summer dress the other week that looked great with trainers and I felt 15 years younger than I am - 2 years ago I would have worn linen wide leg trousers and a linen top, both of which I actually hated as felt fat and incredibly frumpy in then.

I don't know the answer but for me, weight contributed massively.

I agree, some overweight people don't look frumpy at all - I think it's partly a shape issue but also knowing how to wear clothes that flatter your specific figure. I was overweight in my early 20s and didn't look frumpy. That said, I'm overweight again now a decade later and do look frumpy although less so recently since I've lost 1 of the 4 stone I need to lose, so I don't know if my shape has change slightly.

I think for me as someone who is short and currently overweight what has looked frumpy on me recently is oversized winter jackets, and baggy trousers.

The bottom line is what looks frumpy on one person, may not look frumpy on the next.

Oh please that’s hardly misogyny 😂 it’s more acceptable or even expected for women to carry handbags whereas men have to cram everything into their pockets so there’s a bit of a trade off to be had. I find these flimsy accusations of ‘misogyny’ to be massively watering the word down at the moment.

We’ll cut loose clothes (oversized) look stylish not grumpy. Too tight looks frumpy.

Yes, absolutely. There’s a tendency for people to cram themselves into clothes that are a size too small and it looks dreadful.

For me personally I definitely looked ‘frumpy’ when I put on weight and hid myself in leggings and big baggy tent-like t-shirts. Shapeless and dowdy- and also high necks and no waist definition makes my top half look huge. A v neck can make a huge difference. I would look even worse with pulled back hair, no makeup and bad posture. It’s sort of a vicious circle - when I felt no clothes looked good it seemed pointless making the effort with makeup, accessories etc, which meant I looked even worse.

i also find a lot of calf-length / midi dresses look frumpy on me. Many women can pull them off but sadly I’m not one of them. They just seem to cut my legs off at the wrong point.

in terms of a stereotypical ‘frumpy’ look (and I agree it’s a horrible word) I picture a big-bosomed woman with an ill fitting high-necked top, a shapeless skirt or ‘slacks’ and unflattering ‘clumpy’ shoes. Also agree that a big fussy scarf worn as an accessory can make the wearer appear frumpy if worn with such an outfit. A good haircut also makes a huge difference. Grey can definitely look chic and stylish, but I agree there is ‘grey’ and ‘grey’

Don’t leave your hair to go grey, get a decent haircut and colour it regularly. Look after your skin. Don’t wear glasses, get laser eye Surgury or wear lenses. Wear nice makeup and get some decent clothes. Don’t let yourself get fat.

Spend lots of money and get loads of treatments. Spend ages on looking right.

or just wear what you like.

one of my friends is ‘frumpy’. She’s always dressed in practical clothing, no make up, grey hair in a practical short style, etc. even dressed up, she’d meet Society’s definition of frumpy. But she doesn’t give a fuck whether anyone thinks she looks ‘good’ or not. And good on her!

It’s not watering it down to object to the main objective for women being to look good.

But OP did.

It's fine to not want to look 'frumpy'. And to give a fuck.

who said it’s the main objective for women to look good?

MissHavershamJoinsTinder · 21/08/2022 13:59

Most women at the top of politics don't look "good"-whatever political hue they are. It hasn't them held them back, so I don't think the main objective is for women to look good.

But if, like OP, you are bothered about how you present-then there is nothing wrong with tackling that.

Who can be even arsed ffs?

I don’t understand why a load of posters who seem to see fashion and appearance as a waste of time, have turned up on this thread specifically to say so before insisting they ‘don’t care and can’t be bothered’. If this thread was about interiors would you show up to say ‘it’s just a house, it says nothing about you, who can be arsed’?

RooniIWazlib · 21/08/2022 14:14

Is she that bothered? She's buggered off.

sunglassesonthetable · 21/08/2022 14:16

Give over. This thread is hardly helping.

Don't wear glasses???????????????????

Jesus fucking wept.

I've just done a search on OP. Lots of threads she's started and then not appeared on again. Just saying.

I'd be a liability without my glasses

Contacts aren't always practical

Hair in a bob

Cate Blanchett, Naomi Watts, Mariella Frostrup - all have bobs and none of those women (and a million others) are frumpy.

ShelfyMcShelfface · 21/08/2022 14:42

I think looking unhealthy looks frumpy. I need to lose a stone. I've decided this is my year to do it. It's a combo of post baby weight and peri. It s on my stomach and I think clothes don't hang nicely on me as a result.

I think warmer hair and make up can also make a big difference.

Mintchervilpurslane · 21/08/2022 14:43

Well this thread is depressing. I have a layered bob, a matronly bosom and wear boot cut jeans. I am the epitome of frump.
