I'm trying not to be outraged by this, but I just can't get my head around this womans comment!

Joined a friend app a few months a go and have actually been pleasantly surprised by it so far and have met some lovely women and made a few good friends, which was the aim, so am obviously happy.

However, I had been chatting to this woman for a few days and she sounded like an intelligent, interesting person, but when she asked what my husband did for a living and I corrected her and said "sorry, wife", she got really strange and said, "I'm sorry, but I'm really just looking for friends, which is why I'm on a friend app" 😶🤔🙄

Erm....what? 1, why would I try to find women on a friend app when there are plenty of dating apps? 2, why would I try and chat her up by telling her I had a wife?! So many whys here!!

It's absolutely ridiculous and bloody insulting! Does me having a wife mean I can't possibly have a platonic relationship with a woman?!

Just venting really.

Here you go. I’ve got a good one. Maybe the woman has Tourette’s and her tic is to periodically shout that she just wants friends? That’s the most plausible “it’s a misunderstanding” theory available.

My guess is she thought you were a man. It's up to you whether you can be arsed finding out what she meant of course OP. But you know, not everyone knows any gay couples in their RL and it may not have occurred to her
so its more likely that a man has infiltrated the site to pick up women but forgot he's meant to be a woman so talked about his wife not husband (surely you'd just pretend you were single?) than a lesbian wants a friend? Some people live in a weird world.

Well there are some real throw-backs who have an issue with lesbians so if she is one of them - lucky you have found out now. Or (I know you have to verify the picture etc but you could have used your wife's) she thinks you are some creep-bloke who is on the site looking to pick up women after befriending them.

It's an odd one isn't it? Years ago I worked with someone who talked about one or two particular gay women as "raving lesbians". People in the public eye like Sue Perkins or Sophie Ward. Why they were "raving" or what that meant I don't know. I found it irritating in the extreme and was subjected to abuse myself when I pulled him up on it.

Op replied to you and clarified she said Sorry, it's wife actually" followed by what my wife does for a living, so you're taking umbrage with me guessing what the wife's job is?? But still won't explain hoe sorry its eife actually, she's a ....... would make the woman think op was calling the woman her wife or anything else that would warrant an assertion that the woman didn't want to hook up?

The idea that op called the woman"wife" might elicit dome response, but it wouldn't make sense with the actual conversation.
The idea that the woman thought its more likely shes a man who forgot he was pretending he was a man and talked about a wife because that's more likely than a lesbian existing and wanting a friend is pretty ridiculous too

You might as well say she thought op wanted a kidney or a surrogate - why? No reason, but anything ludicrous is more reasonable than someone being homophobic/ ignorant
