I've rolled my eyes at her claims from day one.....she has a way with words but that's as far as it goes......the very involved father of her son spoke out at one point too. 😬

I never got the appeal, so one who came from a family with money and worked in media, rehashing stuff which is already out there.

Im sure that she did help people and was useful but she is treated like some sort of poverty messiah.

WarnerSisters · 02/08/2022 17:19

I think she’s a genius master of SM bullshittery. She’s got people so convinced she had a horrific, poverty-stricken working class childhood and now still lives with her son in massive penury (in a huge house with enormous garden in the most expensive area of her town, surrounded with designer dog, Botox and teeth whitening, Cotswold Co furniture and designer goods for years and years). As others have said, her Patreon alone brings in over £2.5k a month for NO WORK.

In her defence, followers like @Tsandjdarethrbest say things like this: “In terms of their work, they do a lot of campaigning which is very time consuming. They persuaded the ONS to change their criteria for calculating the cost of living.”

She really, really didn’t. If you can find hard evidence of her doing anything (and that evidence doesn’t just include the Guardian repeating her claims) I’ll eat my hat.

Shouting about Tories on Twitter is not campaigning; shouting on Twitter about economics with a GCSE-level understanding of how global economics works is not campaigning; getting oneself mentioned in the proximity of Martin Lewis and Marcus Rashford is not campaigning. I’d love to read a really long-form breakdown of her and I do wish her all the best, once she stops asking vulnerable people to pay her because she “needs” the money.

She’s a fascinating figure because of this profile she’s created from smoke and mirrors; she may be broke, but she absolutely is not a campaigner, a full-time single mother, or someone struggling with ongoing income issues. She’s good at what she does - it’s just that poverty campaigning isn’t what she does.

My god. The grandiosity.

it's not just that. If you have a "profile" and you are posting about being skint and looking for work, then what employer is going to give you a contract with tweets like that? FAR too much of a risk that you will do/say/tweet something which brings their newspaper or tv channel into disrepute. So TV channels choose someone less controversial like Chris Bavin.

Someone who had been genuinely poor and was a genuine expert on living on a budget would be ideal for shows like Eat Well for Less. Yet the BBC hired (dancer, not chef) Ashley Banjo. I wonder why.

DelisButAlsoCrime · 02/08/2022 17:20

I mean surely the point @Maëlys is half of these people ARE funding her soooo…

takeitandleaveit · 02/08/2022 17:21

My life has been blissfully Jack Monroe-free until this thread.

I've read as far as I want to now. Jeez.

feistyoneyouare · 02/08/2022 15:06

It might be boring but the message she's trying to get across is an important one, which a lot of people (including on this thread) seem to be choosing to turn a deaf ear to.

Or, they don't believe her. Oh, sorry, that's not allowed is it?

Jack's partner left her. Jack bought a kitten that had congenital deformities and was too young anyway to be removed from its mother, and named the kitten after her ex's beloved childhood pet. she took the kitten to 3 different vets who all said its deformities were too severe, it was liekly in a lot of pain and the kindest thing was to put it down. Jack did not put it down but paraded it over social media, placed it with her adult, very large and territorial cat, showed videos of her forcing it to walk etc (it had deformed hips amongst other things). It was a little creepy because the kitten's eyes were so glazed and pained. She gave the kitten a shower / bath for social media, and relatively soon after that the kitten died on its own. Jack made a eulogy for it on a monetised youtube vid. she may also have accepted donations for the kitten's treatment, can't recall.

it was very unpleasant episode and difficult to understand tbh. I think she was upset because her ex had left.

I am not up to date on Jack Monroe's latest as I unfollowed around the time of the kitten because it really was as described above. It was so, so upsetting. And if the sequence and stories in Jack's tweets at the time are true then it does seem likely the kitten died alone in her bathroom. Of course, there is no way of checking as Jack is (or was) fond of mass deleting her tweets. I believe the monetised video is still out there somewhere though, possibly You Tube or Instagram.

amazing isnt it, the way that you can word something like someone rescuing a disabled kitten and trying to care for it, can be worded to make it sound like she was rubbing her hands together with glee, maliciously forcing it to walk, and PARADING it all over social media. I guess it would pass the time when shes finished counting her billions like scrooge mcduck.

karomakulture · 02/08/2022 17:24

People can be skint and have money at the same time. I know I do! This is not in JM's defence but I am SELF DIAGNOSED adhd (it's probably PD to be honest, as I sups is the case with JM) and terrible with money. I blow it all as soon as I'm paid. So if you looked at my SM you would see me as a well off person but actually I have 62p in my account until the end of the month now.
So the reality is 'I'm skint because I spent all my money in quite a manic way as I really get a kick from buying stuff. But I could go with 'I'm so skint poor me'. No one would know the difference because the reality is the same (62p to last 28 days). I can see how JM gets caught up in the fantasy version of her life and gets defensive when people hit her with the receipts. It's actually something I can quite relate to.

It really pisses me off that she’s appropriating autism & neurodiversity like this. She’s using it as a shield for her unethical dishonest behaviour.

how is it appropriating autism and neurodiversity when she is autistic.

You cant appropriate a disability that you actually have. What a fucking weird comment.

Jack: Writes blog post claiming they are so skint they haven't been able to afford shampoo and conditioner for two years with a PayPal link at the end of it

Everyone: but how is this possible when you've just bought a two grand designer puppy, have a pair of Tiffany earrings, an Emin in the bathroom and a Patreon income of at least £2500 a month?

Jack: MY FINANCIAL SITUATION IS NONE OF YOUR CONCERN!!!!!!

She didn't rescue the kitten. More than one vet told her it should be put to sleep as it had such severe disabilities, but she prolonged the poor creature's agony for weeks. It was really, really horrible to watch.

Windyone · 02/08/2022 17:28

@karomakulture why not get an actual diagnosis so you can get help?

newrubylane · 02/08/2022 17:28

LouisRenault · 02/08/2022 15:54

Mean income for an author is something like 6.5k per annum

And there'll always be peaks and troughs as well, if your last book didn't do quite so well, or it's a while until your next one comes out, maybe. Or your publisher drops you and you've got nothing lined up.

Any writer who makes a good or even adequate living solely from the income from their books is doing well.

Which is why many authors have other jobs. Whether it's a regular day job or jobs related to writing, such as teaching writing courses. If JM isn't making enough from her/their books, she/they can do the same.

I'd expect someone like her to be earning well above the mean though. That figure will include a huge number of authors of very low print run single books who will be making next to nothing, and the significantly fewer big big names like JK Rowling etc. Jack lies much closer to the top of that pile than the bottom - big public profile, big name publisher, cookbooks aren't 'niche' so it's a decent-sized market and she's written a few of them, so she should be making a half-decent income from them.

Beefcurtains79 · 02/08/2022 17:30

So she has an accountant as well? They must be doing doing a terrible job if she’s as skint as she claims. A Burberry coat is nearly £2k as well, - you can buy a lot of bread, jam and shower gel with that too.

Is there nothing you've read here that worries you about JM, @Branleuse? I don't see ignoring, in fact going against, professional advice in a matter of animal welfare as a good or excusable thing, so if that's what happened in this case (I don't follow JM on Twitter so I don't know), it makes me think less of JM.

WarnerSisters · 02/08/2022 17:32

"She doesn't seem to actually DO anything? Most people would use their profile to earn money - either she hasn't worked to do that or hasn't managed to... She hasn't leveraged it effectively."

She is doing a hell of a lot (of good), it just seems to be that she's not doing whatever effectively to pay her bills.

I've followed her on Twitter for a while, and have just read that latest post. I'm a bit gobsmacked at all the stuff people are posting here about her. It is clear that she has quite significant mental and physical health challenges, on top of being neurodiverse and having a well documented trauma history. I don't suppose that is helped by her line of work/activism in the current political or economic situation. She is approached by, and helps a hell of a lot of individual people who are in dire straights, and being faced day in day out with the harsh reality of poverty in other people's lives must take it's toll. Being on the receiving end of comments like those on here and on the twitter thread - daily - must take it's toll.

Should she be off twitter? For her mental wellbeing, perhaps, but it's one of the main places she is present and as a public figure visibility is key.

I just think she is somebody who has a history of trauma (and clearly couldn't afford therapy), who is quite possibly paying off huge debts from her previous time in poverty, who has glaringly obvious mental and physical health difficulties, and is struggling. I don't get all the hate and why people think she is lying. I've been close to people with a not-dissimilar background, and it's fucking hard to pull yourself up out of all that shit.

You say it’s clear she’s got all these mental and physical health issues. How is it clear? From what she says? That’s she's got crippling arthritis in her shoulder (the day before she poses lying on her front on her elbows)? Every time she says she’s got a physical ailment, it’s normally to distract from something behavioural she’s done. And no one would know her mental health issues besides her doctors - but if you cry wolf too many times about physical stuff, it can be hard to always keep believing the complex, myriad MH ones, even when you want to.

If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it might possibly not an arthritic, ADHD, autistic, tooth-crumbling, respiratory-struggling unicorn. (And genuine Flowers to all the MNers who do have to deal with those issues IRL every day.)

TrashPandas · 02/08/2022 17:35

There's been some nonsense posted here about book profits. The author's cut usually works out about 80p a copy with fiction books, which sell for about £9. Cookbooks are usually £15-25 and with Jack's profile, she'll be selling tens of thousands if not over 100,000 copies.

Yes, many authors are making below minimum wage from book sales. Jack is not one of them.

Branleuse · 02/08/2022 17:26

She's never actually been formally diagnosed with autism, though. I think perhaps ADHD at a push.

KimWexlersPonyTail · 02/08/2022 17:36

So far I have seen her claim to be poverty stricken working class single parent, an immigrant, homeless, prostitute, straight, lesbian, bi sexual, trans, non binary, suffer from ASD, ADHD, Long Covid and some physical disability that means she can't do her hair or something.

Her son is about 12, JM could easily get a full time job if she could get off of Twitter long enough.

Very upset over the kitten saga; hadn't heard about that and wish I hadn't read it now. Think the way she attacked Jamie Oliver on line was awful, not his biggest fan but kudos to the way he handled it.

Maëlys · 02/08/2022 17:37

This is not in JM's defence but I am SELF DIAGNOSED adhd (it's probably PD to be honest, as I sups is the case with JM) and terrible with money.

@karomakulture So you have no ADHD diagnosis and yet you go around claiming to have it, a real neurological developmental disorder?

You CANNOT self diagnose medical conditions like autism and ADHD 🤯 You are not qualified to do so and you’ve got a bloody nerve claiming to actually have one of those conditions just because you’ve read a few articles online about them.
