Faux concern. Also bullying

If faux concern is spending time tweeting and DM-ing JM up until June 2020 (with replies) spending time speaking with them and offering them support, then sure. It is possible to be conflicted in this case - both genuinely concerned about their mental health but also want a narrative that is potentially exploiting other, more vulnerable people to be addressed.

There is nothing remotely bullying about the reiteration of well established, well documented and real time facts from JM's own account.

Emotionalsupportviper · 02/08/2022 16:41

Not just me that thinks her "recipes" are a bit Mrs Cropper from Vicar of Dibley, then, @BornIn78

I didn't comment on the recipes because they really are grim, bit others seemed to like them soI thought it was just me.

"She doesn't seem to actually DO anything? Most people would use their profile to earn money - either she hasn't worked to do that or hasn't managed to... She hasn't leveraged it effectively."

She is doing a hell of a lot (of good), it just seems to be that she's not doing whatever effectively to pay her bills.

I've followed her on Twitter for a while, and have just read that latest post. I'm a bit gobsmacked at all the stuff people are posting here about her. It is clear that she has quite significant mental and physical health challenges, on top of being neurodiverse and having a well documented trauma history. I don't suppose that is helped by her line of work/activism in the current political or economic situation. She is approached by, and helps a hell of a lot of individual people who are in dire straights, and being faced day in day out with the harsh reality of poverty in other people's lives must take it's toll. Being on the receiving end of comments like those on here and on the twitter thread - daily - must take it's toll.

Should she be off twitter? For her mental wellbeing, perhaps, but it's one of the main places she is present and as a public figure visibility is key.

I just think she is somebody who has a history of trauma (and clearly couldn't afford therapy), who is quite possibly paying off huge debts from her previous time in poverty, who has glaringly obvious mental and physical health difficulties, and is struggling. I don't get all the hate and why people think she is lying. I've been close to people with a not-dissimilar background, and it's fucking hard to pull yourself up out of all that shit.

Just to let you know that she has boasted about having years of private therapy and three psychiatrists on speed dial (her words).

her accounts of trauma are a little confusing because many of them are mutually contradictory or do not fit in with her previously stated timelines.

I am not questioning her traums but at the same time I can understand why people are questioning her given her manifest inconsistencies.

Also for someone with poor MH she is very quick to bully and pile on people on twitter. Mostly ordinary (non blue tick) people for innocuous things such as stating they don't like a recipe of hers, or were unable to make it work. Many of the people she has bullied are elderly, vulnerable or with poor MH.

For those who think Jack Monroe has 'done much good', could you please elaborate as to what she's actually achieved over her 10 years in the public eye, apart from tweeting up to 12 hours a day?

OMG - this! What does she actually DO?!

Tweeting isn't doing anything.. Tweeting isn't activism

Maëlys · 02/08/2022 16:44

She’s not autistic FFS. She is self diagnosed. She identifies as autistic and uses it as an excuse for anything and everything.

Her Wikipedia claims she was diagnosed as a child but she admitted herself on Twitter (tweets now deleted of course) around the time when she first claimed to be autistic, that she’d never had an official diagnosis of autism 🙄

Bubblebubblebah · 02/08/2022 16:44

I am bit confused. Every time poverty is talked about people greatly discuss that people in poverty do not have money to stock up (like buy big bags of rice for example) so what are the books helpful for if they cost more than the rice? I know there are few recipes available online but not as many as the books.
People on a breadline weren't the target customers with books for a tenner, were they...

Bubblebubblebah · 02/08/2022 16:45

Note I am not personally attacking, it just never made sense to me

ArcheryAnnie · 02/08/2022 16:45

MineIsBetterThanYours · 02/08/2022 16:29

She doesn't seem to actually DO anything? Most people would use their profile to earn money - either she hasn't worked to do that or hasn't managed to... She hasn't leveraged it effectively.

Has it not crossed your mind that making money, as much as she can, has never been in the top of her agenda?
See the fact she has and is still giving a lot of her books away, eg with food banks

She didn't give her books to food banks. The extra books were bought by her fans for her to pass on. She was still paid for the books.

Maëlys · 02/08/2022 16:46

It really pisses me off that she’s appropriating autism & neurodiversity like this. She’s using it as a shield for her unethical dishonest behaviour.

PollyDarton1 · 02/08/2022 16:47

In regards to the sock puppet account for some context.

Either JM or their supporters have instigated widely known dog piles on various Twitter users in the past for doing as little as liking a tweet that could be construed as critical. It is understandable that a tweet/thread of such magnitude would be safer posted through the lens of a largely blank profile to avoid potential dog piling, doxxing etc. JM has in the past threatened to legally challenge Twitter users for questioning their narrative (although it has come to nothing).

Aren't we all, at the end of the day, here posting under pseudonyms doing the same thing?

whatsup00 · 02/08/2022 16:47

Maybe she is just really bad at managing money and she has spent a lot on therapy by the sound of it. Private therapy and 3 psychs is not going to be cheap at all.

sobeyondthehills · 02/08/2022 16:48

For those people saying she is doing good for those on the poverty line, if she is still claiming poverty, while being able to buy a two grand dog.

She is going to be used as an example as to how people are not as bad off, like the daily mail and channel five views of people on benefits, which was used in parliament as the reason to reform the benefit system

KiwiPanda · 02/08/2022 16:49

She’s not posted anything on her Patreon for two years. What costs are associated with doing nothing?

whatsup00 · 02/08/2022 16:49

I don't have any issues with any of the things she's done. But my only issue is that I don't think you can survive on the meal plans (they are not enough calories). So you would just lose weight and lose weight. It isn't realistic. That is my only issue with it. I think she has genuinely struggled and been poor but at the end of the day that is just my opinion and I want to trust that she is telling the truth.

whatsup00 · 02/08/2022 16:50

OK and a 2 grand dog is nuts if you are broke.

Bigwetdog · 02/08/2022 16:51

She's done just three blog posts this year!!!

SweetSakura · 02/08/2022 16:52

I don't think pointing out wild factual inconsistencies can be called bullying

Oh wake up! She spent 2k on a dog. She’s pleading fake poverty for attention & money.

ArcheryAnnie · 02/08/2022 16:54

I have been sympathetic to her in the past, but the "more, mummy, please can I have bread and jam, mummy" quote in her latest blog really pissed me off. Her kid must be about 12 by now, and by all accounts lives most of the time with his dad. He's at secondary school. Can you imagine being at secondary school and having this come out as a quote from you, even if it was a much younger you? That poor kid is going to have a million other kids saying it to him in the schoolyard. Plus, as others have pointed out, the £2k spent on a designer dog would pay for quite a lot of bread and jam.

Jack needs to come of social media and sort herself out.

I have little spare cash this month because I am spending if all on urgent private healthcare rather than waiting for NHS care. (GP advised me to)

I don' t call that poverty, i feel remarkably privileged to have the choice.

Tsandjdarethrbest · 02/08/2022 16:56

It’s not untypical for freelancers to spend money when they have it. It’s feast or famine. I know this from experience. Isn’t she autistic too? That would make her spending habits even more erratic.

PixellatedPixie · 02/08/2022 17:01

Don’t people with nearly 200k followers make money from Instagram?

What’s the story with the kitten?

Jack's partner left her. Jack bought a kitten that had congenital deformities and was too young anyway to be removed from its mother, and named the kitten after her ex's beloved childhood pet. she took the kitten to 3 different vets who all said its deformities were too severe, it was liekly in a lot of pain and the kindest thing was to put it down. Jack did not put it down but paraded it over social media, placed it with her adult, very large and territorial cat, showed videos of her forcing it to walk etc (it had deformed hips amongst other things). It was a little creepy because the kitten's eyes were so glazed and pained. She gave the kitten a shower / bath for social media, and relatively soon after that the kitten died on its own. Jack made a eulogy for it on a monetised youtube vid. she may also have accepted donations for the kitten's treatment, can't recall.

it was very unpleasant episode and difficult to understand tbh. I think she was upset because her ex had left.

moita · 02/08/2022 17:05

Their dad was very high-up in the fire service: they had a good upbringing and he helped them out with a job at the fire service.

All smoke and mirrors. They are not well liked at Essex fire service!! Their dad is much liked..
