I've thought the same - she is a pretty high profile published author. How can she still be living in poverty? A lot of people seem to hate her, which also intrigues me.

Authors make absolute peanuts from their books. For every book that sells she is likely to receive pence not pounds, and from that she has to pay her agent (15-20% of all income) as well as NI because writers are self employed etc etc. It easy to be a well known author and earning below the poverty line. I know quite a few of them.

Whoever owns that account certainly seems to have a big issue but you can't deny some pretty big inconsistencies have been highlighted.. I have to say when I've seen her on television she does seem to contradict herself or go off on tangents by chucking in random stats with no references.

ComtesseDeSpair · 02/08/2022 14:36

If her book writing isn’t paying her a living, why can’t she do something else for work? She clearly has some skills she could put to good use and with a supportive family and her child’s father pulling his weight it isn’t as if she faces the childcare issues many single parents do.

Tsandjdarethrbest · 02/08/2022 14:36

I thought their fortunes have changed dramatically because they’re now single?

ComtesseDeSpair · 02/08/2022 14:39

There are enormous inconsistencies in everything she says. A couple of years ago, somebody on Tattle found an old Insta account of hers, with dozens of photos posted at a time that she later claimed she was homeless and / or with no money to eat, of new home furnishings and expensive materials she’d bought for some craft projects. The account went poof very shortly afterwards.

rightonthyme · 02/08/2022 14:42

Has she paid her taxes yet 😏

ThanksAntsThants · 02/08/2022 14:44

Why doesn’t she get a job?

Her money might now be assets like a home but she is cash poor

Buying a designer breed puppy, getting a tattoo (what a bloody cliche), going to Venice and somewhere in the Netherlands and going by the look of her on telly recently, spending an awful lot on both, fillers and teeth whitening tends to have that effect on people.

Because authors earn fuck all unless you are JKR and sold billions of books.

All bought before she separated and she had a different budget maybe?

How many women on MN struggle when they split with their partner?
How many more stories do we need of people going to food banks with designer clothing they bought BEFORE everything went tits up?

Good question

OliviaBond · 02/08/2022 14:50

I thought she donated everything to the trussell trust. I can't remember why I think that. Off to read the tweet!

darisdet · 02/08/2022 14:50

I thought her days of poverty were long behind her?

Though I know many think she was never in real poverty, but now I don't know what's true, to be honest.

Londono · 02/08/2022 14:50

What happened with the kitten? It is referenced on the Twitter thread

I heard that too. I no longer know what to believe.

darisdet · 02/08/2022 14:52

I think the kitten died @Londono

The puppy was after the breakup, as far as I can see. And it's been constant haven't got a penny to my name posts throughout.

This seems more of a person going to a food bank and then going shopping for clothes they don't need because they don't need to buy any food until Saturday.

Ginnypotter44 · 02/08/2022 14:54

I saw this, very interesting. She isn't genuine. I did think it a bit obsessive.

Minisarerustbuckets · 02/08/2022 14:55

She never was really poor though was she ? She has done some good as she devised recipes using cheap ingredients for budget, nutritious food so credit to her and has highlighted food poverty. But she is a wee tourist isn't she ?

BlossomsOnATree · 02/08/2022 14:56

The recent piece she wrote that incurred the criticism, also talks about spending 90+% of income on rent and it being a difficult decision to downsize and get something cheaper and have to get a one-bed and sleep in the living room, which "hurts".

Why? Surely that's a fecking obvious solution. I'm a professional, working full time and when I separated from ex, I was totally ready to sleep in the living room so my 2 DC could have bedrooms. We're in an expensive city and I wasn't sure if I could afford a 3-bed. In the end I did find one I could afford which is great, but I would have slept in the living room no problem, as lots of people do.

JM comes across like she doesn't actually understand poverty, despite talking about it all the time. Anyone who is so poor they have less than £20 a week for food for two and are having to sell stuff, would obviously downsize at the first opportunity yet she talks about it as a terrible sacrifice.

IIRC, Jack split up with the partner they rented the house with back around the time of the first lockdown.

This is all a real mess. I do worry a bit because Jack obviously has poor mental health and what's happening on Twitter can't be nice at all. I hope she has a lot of IRL support around her.

RomeoOscarXrayIndigoEcho · 02/08/2022 15:01

Based on the minimum tier of £3.50 Jack should be receiving at least £2,700 a month from Paetron (there are 772 Paetrons)

I don't know what fees will come off that, there will be tax and NI to pay. An accountant perhaps?

BugsInTheBed · 02/08/2022 14:07

I've found this cookingonabootstrap.com/2022/07/31/the-curse-of-the-poverty-hangover-ten-years-on/
which would chime in with the impression of her when I heard her. Someone with a very broken background, poor mental health and "managing" skills. She didnt suddenly become someone stable just because she became better known/
I cant find the twitter reply thats being discussed though.

She might not have suddenly become 'stable' (define stable???) overnight, but mental health/general life challenges and good ideas/abilities in some areas are not mutually exclusive.

Also, even if she was in a bad place, is it not possible that she could have grown and evolved out of that? It seems very dismissive to suggest that if someone's life used to be in a bad place things couldn't possibly have improved for that person, or that they couldn't have improved their mindset. People do grow and evolve.
