JM followers telling w/c women who are currently living in poverty (and dared to express their opinion) to shut the fuck up.

I haven’t seen this - I’m not saying or doubting it exists, I’m literally just saying I haven’t seen it but that’s probably because I don’t read that much of comments etc on Twitter.

this is clearly a stupid and awful thing to do. Telling the most marginalised and vulnerable people to shut up when supposedly that is who you care about.

smacks of ‘footballerism’ that James O’brien talks about.

Rollingdownland · 08/08/2022 15:23

@Bibbetyboo you say your life's a mess (might you say 'a chaos'?) and you have no time for anything.

Like a certain St Jack of Patreon non-disclosure, might your life not be as productive as you'd like because you spend too much time on social media?

Just a thought!

Bibbetyboo · 08/08/2022 15:28

@Rollingdownland almost certainly, though I am not that regular a user of SM/ poster. It’s usually in jags but I’ve certainly wasted too much time online today! I doubt I am
alone in that though.

as mentioned with another poster above, SM is insidious in this way.

Rollingdownland · 08/08/2022 15:31

So put it down! Jack should also heed this advice. If your life's in chaos, having arguments with randoms online isn't going to help anything.

Mumberjack · 08/08/2022 15:50

@Bibbetyboo look just finish up here for now Jack and publish that recipe you’ve been promising your Twitter followers since yesterday.
And try to be a little less recognisable next time you want to pose as an anonymous mumsnetter 😂

ermagerdabear · 08/08/2022 16:20

FWIW, bibbety probably isn't Jack. But I seriously can't understand why (again) someone who knows nothing about Jack to the point where they list the VBI as something she's done, would wade onto thread giving their opinion about it and continue arguing about stuff they've been put straight on. What do they get out of that?

Jack isn't suing anyone. She's not suing Molly because all they did is list a load of contradictions that came from the horse's mouth. She isn't suing Tattle because they also have all the receipts. She isn't suing Anderson and Fox because she'd have to reveal her Patreon income. She isn't suing MN or anyone on this thread either, Saville comparisons or not.

Bubblebubblebah · 08/08/2022 16:25

At this oint I don't think they even have a lawyer as well

ermagerdabear · 08/08/2022 16:34

She has, sort of. It's Rinsed Hoops Redux, for the haterz, y'all. Just a photo atm, and there are people in the quote tweets seriously asking for the recipe 🙄

I think she would have been better letting this one lie instead of reminding everyone what a shit cook she is who has no idea about food.

Bubblebubblebah · 08/08/2022 16:40

I think she is actually trolling the poor now.

"Throw away half of your food and go buy cheese instead to make half a portion of what you had"😔

Bubblebubblebah · 08/08/2022 16:43

I also wonder how many people donating to foodbanks now wonder about the food waste

Rantypanties · 08/08/2022 17:10

‘Conspiracy theorist’….sure…remind me again how many Twitter sock accounts did the judge in the KH trial say that Jack had? 9 was it? Is that normal?!

I wish Jack was as obsessed with actually helping people as she is with herself. I wish Jack would just look after her patreons and give them some nice signed postcards from vistaprint to keep them happy. All of this isn’t hard and no one, even the nastiest people, have ever said that Jack doesn’t deserve to have money or live in a nice house.

Get off Twitter, thank your lucky stars this didn’t blow up as big as it could have done and go and start interacting with charities. Raise their profiles, do some good. fundraise for them, not you.

EsmaCannonball · 08/08/2022 19:03

I do think it is a bit mean to pick on the infamous hoops, but even they have a conflicting origin story. Someone on Twitter (I've lost who) posted two different accounts from Jack, side by side. In one, in response to the recent hoo-hah, she said she came up with the recipe after a request from a food bank which had a client who often had those ingredients. In an earlier quotation she said that she came up with the recipe when she needed some self-care and was too emotionally drained to boil pasta.

Given that she referenced the Jamie Oliver Jollof rice fracas when she was mad at him, I wonder what the Italians would make of her bastardising their recipes? Is cultural appropriation only wrong when someone you don't like is doing it?

From what I can see, the Tom Kerridge and Marcus Rashford campaign is more focused on how to provide nutritious food on a budget. It's a different USP.

nonsensicalmess · 08/08/2022 19:27

I have never followed JM on social media, had only seen them pop up occasionally until the weekend’s fiasco and then when I started looking more closely, within 24 hours I’d spotted two very obvious sock accounts on Twitter responding to the criticism. One was where JM must have forgot which account they were using as something like “care about my finances” was written, along with some really nasty stuff to a woman who’d detailed her experience of living on UC. All later deleted of course. Much as what I’ve learned since the weekend has been eye-opening stuff, it’s also made me feel a bit sad for the life JM must lead; can you even imagine trying to stay on top of the lies and sock accounts. And that’s how you spend your one and only life. Day and night. I’d much rather my own, boring but nice, life without all the drama, lies and insecurities!

If she wasn't on Twitter though, she might have to get a real job. It's a nice little earner for her because let's not forget, this all started because someone did a thread questioning her claim of being poor against what her Patreon brings in. If she keeps tweeting vaguely political stuff, people think she's doing some activism (as we've seen on this thread) and will forgive her for not sending out the Patreon rewards.

Stabbitystabstab · 08/08/2022 19:49

I take it Tom Kerridge has assumed a dignified silence regarding the shitty accusation she made?
She should take a leaf out of his book (pun intended)

nokitchen · 08/08/2022 20:40

Agree with @ermagerdabear.

I imagine she either falls out with people and cuts them out of her life, or they get fed up with her and cut them out of their lives. The family may grey rock her or tolerate her because of the child involved. Sorry old situation. Don't imagine she will ever change as she can't learn from her mistakes. She's a sad person.

Tombero · 08/08/2022 20:41

I don’t get today’s recipe costing.

According to Asda online, a tin of hoops is 19p, 500g of dried spaghetti 23p (smart price).

Her blog says this price difference is important if you’re struggling as a reason to use tinned.

But, the dried pasta will serve 6 portions, her tin 1.

I’ve noticed this selective costings before and it seems disingenuous.

Well the defence is that it can be done in microwave.

Which a dry pasta can be done too, but no one seems to mention this, imho, quite important fact...

ScreamingMeMe · 08/08/2022 20:55

I'm Jack Monroe and so's my wife.

Cloud9isnowclosed · 08/08/2022 21:06

Also, thinking about the nutritional value of the meal (reader, it is negligible) if we go by the original backstory for the recipe (no emotional energy to boil pasta) then the recipe (not commenting on quality!) makes sense. A night when you know pasta will comfort you but you don't have the capacity to do much to it - hopefully a one off.

However, conceiving this recipe for a food bank client which nutritionally compared to having hoops on toast, or hoops with an egg on top, or hoops on microwaved jacket potato is really quite callous. Surely, as a poverty campaigner she'd be asking the food bank how much choice foodbank users get, what items are food banks struggling with and then launching a campaign to encourage supermarkets to donate x tins of potatoes for every 10kg of potatoes sold in a week for example. And then creating recipes using tins of potatoes and tins of hoops - like potato rosti with hoops (at this point though we come back to the fundamental point that jack is not a good cook so I guess ignore all of the above)

ReneBumsWombats · 08/08/2022 21:12

As dodgy as a lot of this is making her look, I can't help but feel some people have somewhat unreasonable expectations of just how much she can and should do about a national poverty issue that rests primarily with our government.

JohnPrescottsPyjamas · 08/08/2022 21:16

Oh goodness! Maybe the fact that she was born ‘almost three months early’ might explain the catalogue of issues she has, plus her ND?

Sorry I should have added, tongue firmly in cheek!

Scianel · 08/08/2022 21:24

Careful, you might get sued.

Careful, you might get sued.

To be fair, JM way well have been born extremely early and an absolutely genuine fact - but who knows what to believe now?
