Why do so many people think comparing or pointing out parallels between two things means you’re saying they’re exactly the same? Does my nut in!

Because it's a way of shutting down that criticism.

Bibbetyboo · 08/08/2022 10:41

Oh and free speech is not the same as speech free of consequence. You can say what you like as long as it’s legal.

You are not protected from people telling you that they don’t like what you have said. That is their free speech as well.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 08/08/2022 10:42

Yes, and it's her free speech to analyse why people make facile statements to shut down valid criticism of people they like. And on and on.

Bubblebubblebah · 08/08/2022 10:44

This is not just about liking or not liking someone. This is about someone lying to make money off vulnerable people.

And Jamie is well known twat. Good recipes, can't stand him

Bibbetyboo · 08/08/2022 10:46

I agree.

but you shouldn’t really get annoying with someone saying you can’t equate two things if your statement did equate them.

if you said ‘saying that JM shouldn’t be criticised so much because she does a lot of good is like saying that Savile shouldn’t have been criticised because he raised £40m for charity’ is a way of drawing a parallel.

just stating that JS raised the money is equating them and like you are saying the same.

this is a written forum. If you don’t express your point clearly then people will not understand what you’re trying to say. That’s not the same as dismissing valid or other points. You just need to speak clearly in order to not be dismissed . Such is life.

Scianel · 08/08/2022 10:47

Jamie Oliver gets a lot of dislike on here, he's a total twat although I'm not aware of him being an obvious liar or fantasist.
One of my favourite youtube things is watching Uncle Roger roast him.

Bibbetyboo · 08/08/2022 10:48

Gambling, advertising, shitty credit at inflated APRs, the underlying aspects of the Vimes index, local councils, bad landlords, sub contracted services, Tory govt of the last 12 years and god knows how many more years.

all impact vulnerable people a heck of a lot more. If you really care, bung some money to Trussel Trust and save your venom for a complaint letter to your MP rather than someone who writes recipes involving marmalade in curries?

don’t know if that’s an actual recipe - probably!

I LOVE uncle Roger roasting him😂

Ereshkigalangcleg · 08/08/2022 10:49

Why aren't you doing that instead of wasting your time lecturing people on Mumsnet who aren't convinced by Jack Monroe?

Bibbetyboo · 08/08/2022 10:52

after that experience, I am not sure if I would gift someone a JO book etc. But I totally support his efforts in schools and to get people to learn to cook. He wouldn’t exactly be the first rich and sexist man I have come across.

similiarly, years ago I was at a convention which involved a few politicians. There was someone unwell in the audience and Nick Clegg stopped to check on them and make sure they were ok and had assistance. Jack Straw could not have been less bothered. You get these senses of whether people are decent people etc, which I think is what people are reacting against so much with JM.

Had Clegg been doing good since then, I don’t know!

One thing that you absolutely can’t take away from Jack is that she helped to bring down Katie Hopkins. Good riddance and we should all be grateful for that.

Bibbetyboo · 08/08/2022 10:55

@Ereshkigalangcleg because I am totally procrastinating from something I don’t want to do! I discovered this thread last night when breastfeeding and it’s hard not to fall into internet rabbit holes. I am not intending to hector, actually the opposite. I can see the vitriol getting quite strong and I’m just like, hey step back - do you want to let this person that winds you up live rent free in your head or do you want to refocus the energy and feel better?

let’s not forget who the real enemies are. The bastards in government who allow what is meant to be a leading economy and country to be so full of poverty and desperation.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 08/08/2022 10:56

I'll do as I see fit thanks, you do you.

What vimes index. Stop quoting things that don’t exist.

Hating the government/thinking Jack is a phoney at the same time is perfectly doable.

This is sounding awfully familiar 🤔

JubileeTrifle · 08/08/2022 11:28

Actually money is better going to locally run foodbanks which are much less restrictive than the TT. But we know which foodbank organisation is Jacks favourite 😉

Bibbetyboo · 08/08/2022 11:31

The Vimes index is from Pratchett and always refererenced (by Jack) as such. In referring to it, I’m referring to the Pratchett line/
underlying point that it’s more expensive to be poor (e.g prepayment meters etc) rather than a document that Jack has put out. That’s what most people who will refer to Vimes Boots will mean- Pratchett. JM popularised it, I don’t think she is claiming it as hers.

not sure what people are expecting on that front in terms of a document. I think the ONS (is that the right entity) made changes to the basket of goods following consultation with JM. At least that’s what I heard on Radio 4, but maybe the Beeb have been bamboozled by her as well.

accusing someone of theft is a bit much. Generally a good idea to steer clear of libel.

Bubblebubblebah · 08/08/2022 11:33

😁 Yes, mainly by "delete tweet" function....

Bibbetyboo · 08/08/2022 11:34

@JubileeTrifle - I’m sure you’re right. I prob should have just said ‘charity/ food bank’ to be clear as I don’t know enough about TT to endorse them and people should absolutely look for the best/ local charity so they can have the most impact for their money or donations. Fair point there!

BlossomsOnATree · 08/08/2022 11:35

Firstly it wasn't me that brought up Savile, I was defending a PP doing so.

Secondly, it was relevant because the discussion was about people defending JM and acting like she can do no wrong because she does good works. The Savile point was highly relevant - i.e., acting like people can do no wrong because they do good works is unwise and can give people license to abuse the system.

Bibbetyboo · 08/08/2022 11:35

It’s still libel if you published it to one person, so deleting a tweet doesn’t cancel out the libel. It just reduces the damage/ damages that flow from the libel.

i know you’re joking, I’m just being a pedantic lawyer :)

Maybe you should go and advise JM on that

Bibbetyboo · 08/08/2022 11:38

@BlossomsOnATree i don’t disagree that is can be relevant to draw a comparison.

my point is just if you don’t want to be dismissed with the accusation of falsely equating things that are not equal then you should make a comparison rather than phrasing things as being equal.

I think you were defending what the PP meant, I had said that what the PP had said was falsely equating. We’re both right if we assume that actually what the PP meant is what you are saying, if that makes any sensé.

Bibbetyboo · 08/08/2022 11:41

My professional indemnity insurance doesn’t cover me for advising random people on the internet that haven’t sought out my advice :)

the fact that she might have libelled someone doesn’t make it any less true that’s it’s probably best to steer clear of accusing people of theft / other crimes unless you are really sure about the details and can defend it.

a l’égal limitation on free speech.
