If she wants to put herself out there to the extent she does, plead poverty, ask for money, and tweet a mass of inconsistencies then of course people are going to discuss it and query it.

The thing is that you don't need to knwo how much money someone has. What is important that that someone claims to have none (while listing many expensive things they will have to sell many even ft working people can't afford to have). That is it.

I think her latest piece about her impoverished state would actually make someone living in poverty feel even more despairing and hopeless. What hope is there when even someone who has published books and articles, has television slots, does events and public speaking, has advertising and collaboration deals and has paying subscribers is still living on £20 a week, melting soap and using solar garden lights? It could make people think there's no 'out' from the poverty trap for them at all.

Hopefully they could have a closer look and start questioning if it all adds up.

These requests are on top of the income that’s received from collabs, tv appearances, newspaper pieces, aff links on the website (when it worked) and the small amount of book royalties.

@GoodJanetBadJanet you'd have to either be a troll or have the IQ of a potato to not see the obvious cognitive dissonance between the blogs where she claims to have nothing left at the end of the month and be listing things for the pawn shop Vs the acquisition of an expensive dog, the post about booking a new tattoo etc etc. Both cant simultaneously be true.

Perhaps she's terrible with money. Fine. But then she needs to own that, and sort herself out, not do a blog about how poor she is.

Even if you don't approve of how she spends her money, why does that mean she can't or shouldn't give help by sharing recipes /knowledge?

But the whole point is she published the begging blog post telling everyone about her (possibly fake) dire financial straits- she specifically brought her finances into public discussion. There was absolutely no need to make that blog post announcing she was moving into a smaller home, people move house all the time, but she made it all about the money full well knowing their are mugs out there who would send her cash. She belatedly wrote some feeble responses to a few comments saying that people should donate to the Trussel Trust instead of her, but didn't edit her blog post to say that, or remove the links to her PayPal and 'tip jar'.

She literally just said she hasn’t been able to afford shampoo for 2 years. So from that bit information that she is giving freely, she is saying fuck all.
And are you saying it’s okay if she takes money from people under false pretences as long as she spends it all?

I am in two minds about all this now.

I was gutted when I realised how much things didn't add up, in particular stuff about struggling as a single mother when it transpires that her child's dad is very much in the picture after all. I remember one story about her child's shoes being too small, taking them to a local shoe shop to be measured so she could buy shoes the right size on ebay, but then finding she couldn't because she was blocked on ebay because she hadn't had the money to pay previous fees. This made me really, really upset for the child. So I feel a lot of emotional manipulation has gone on.

At the same time its clear from reading some of the stuff she's posted on twitter that she's not well and help is needed. Has she not got a single friend/relative who can explain to her she needs to get off the internet and take her phone off her? Or get her some help? Because I really feel that whatever has gone one, she needs some help.

It looks like she’s going to get away with it again.

By that, I mean no media seem to be picking up on the story and exposing her claims to further scrutiny.

And guardian reader Twitter has massed in her defence. They don’t want to hear it. They really don’t care whether she’s lying or not.

Jack Monroe is left wing and constantly rants about tories, so she is a Good Person. Therefore anyone who criticises her is a Bad Person and must be right wing/a Terf/a troll/a bot.

It is deeply unkind to point out that the emperor is naked and only right wingers, trolls and terfs are unkind.

I've been a single parent with disabilities for years, never had to have a cold shower or sell my lightbulbs.

I can see the income coming from various amaller streams.
Eg. Affiliate amazon gets about 10%
Couple of ads on Instagram etc.
It's small money by itself by they do count together at the end.
I know because I am proper penny to penny so if there is a way to make a pound off a shop or get something tiny I am on it myself.
With the trending today, and books being mainly about a tenner, she should be able to afford bills for the month at least just from that dropped link to amazon.

Transphobia has nothing to do with this. She's a female person who is clearly and openly female, is happy with female pronouns and doesn't attempt to enter male spaces or pass/present as male. Even if you truly are a raging transphobe who hates trans people and objects to preferred pronouns that don't match someone's sex, it literally doesn't make any difference to how you need to address or think about her.
