No one is claiming to ‘know everything’ about JM based on her writing though so fuck only knows why you (and JM) clutch at these straw man arguments. What is being claimed is that frequently, for the last ten years, JM has tweeted and written in depth about their financial situation (and well meaning people have donated a lot of money in the form of patreon and PayPal donations - we know this because this evidence IS available on the internet and I don’t give a shit what anyone says, almost 800 people paying at least £1 a month for zero content since nov 2020 is A LOT of money for no work) while also tweeting about things (such as five figure brand deals, expensive pets, Emin art in the loo, designer goods found in puddles etc) which all spell out a rather inconsistent message.
No one is saying that writing isn’t a job or that writers shouldn’t be paid, nor am I saying that the life of a freelancer isn’t inconsistent and precarious at times. What I am saying is that JM wrote (paraphrasing) ‘I haven’t bought shampoo in two years’ in an essay about how skint they were AND literally 8 months before tweeted someone else a list of hair care products they were using. JM claims they slept rough for two years, yet also claim they have a supportive family and their dad is a landlord with an MBE for fostering.
The whole thing is lunacy, and it absolutely should be discussed (no matter how much you seem to think it doesn’t need to be for reasons I literally can’t fathom) because JM is frequently given a large platform on the back of this (the guardian, daily kitchen, Superdrug campaign, sainsburys, hellmans etc) and if it isn’t true, where exactly does that leave us?
