Which UK city do you think will host Eurovision?

In our house we are guessing either Manchester, because it has the Media City area, and has a reputation for being very vibrant and up and coming, or Cardiff because the waterfront would provide a beautiful backdrop and the Millenium center is right on the bay.

Thanks @CTPT that's a lot earlier than I thought!

I have no memories of there being an English entry?

Royaume Uni, innit?

Sheffield should get it probably won't. Manchester will get it most likely, they seem to be becoming the Northern London.

It's be nice to give it a smaller town, Harrogate hosted it in the past.

The size of arena required these days has ruled out smaller places - the requirement and the list of places which meet this requirement are right back at the start of the thread, then you need to add on the further requirements of hotel capacity and good travel links, before even looking at what sort of side events and showcasing of Ukraine will happen.

All the shortlisted cities are on that list of places with arenas with capacity of 10k or more.

All those saying Newcastle have you ever tried driving there?

I adore Newcastle and go a lot but its roads and those leading to it just wouldn’t cope

The date isn't known yet, is it? Too soon to book hotel accommodation!

Its May but theres a choice about when in May. Likely mid to late May.

From what I've read it seems Oct/Nov time..

They were on sale for the last two Eurovisions much later that that.

Train service to Newcastle is fine, yes the A1 used to diabolical past Leeds but it’s not to bad now. Once you are in Newcastle though the metro is great for getting around and buses are plentiful.

plentry to do, great muse aims and art galleries and also you have quayside and the sage and Baltic in Gateshead as well.

it’s smaller than the other venues but it’s quite a nice place to visit

Newcastle has an airport 30 minutes from the city centre by public transport. A light rail system. It’s on the East Coast mainline. Why would thousands of people need to drive into the city centre? Also the roads are not appreciably worse than most other northern cities - I’ve never experienced congestion like trying to drive into the middle of Manchester or Leeds.

Eurovision is nearly always the 3rd week in May - dont know why that poor poster spent so much time researching what was on in cities in April?

Because I possess the ability to read and saw that the venue requires 6 - 8 weeks clear run up for Eurovision to set up for the staging and media broadcast technical shit. This is a significant hurdle for any venue to over come in terms of bidding. In recent years Eurovision has been on the second or third week in May which I'm well aware of and also keeping my diary free for. Cos I already have a long list of people talking about coming north for or flying over to and using our house as 'base camp'.

'Poor poster'.

As I live near Sheffield it would be nice if we could host....if only In the vain hope that it would give SCC a huge boot up the backside to start improving the city centre. Ah well, I live in hope 😏

The city centre is terrible, isn't it? What on earth were the planners were thinking? It doesn't compare with other cities of its size. That ridiculous situation with John Lewis didn't help, now there's just a vacant eyesore in a prime position which is now listed (?!) just to ensure it's ugliness lives on.

Tbh Meadowhall destroyed Sheffield centre a long time ago

Maireas · 13/08/2022 09:23

That's a real shame.

SILdidittoo · 13/08/2022 09:23

Liverpool, city of music, per head of population it's had more UK number one's than anywhere else.

AwkwardSquad · 13/08/2022 09:31

I would love it to be Newcastle. There’s the arena, Sage, Baltic, the river, the blinking eye bridge - loads of wonderful locations for the inset pieces as well as for the main event!

itrytomakemyway · 13/08/2022 09:54

I would really like Liverpool to get it given that it has such a rich music history. However, as Manchester has the largest Ukranian population outside of London then I would be happy to see it go there. My third choice would be Glasgow.

PoseyFlump · 13/08/2022 14:33

That's a really good point. I went to Manchester properly for the first time recently (rather than just driving through) and it's a great place.

Im so excited for this, I'll take any of the suggestions just so long as I can get tickets! Grin

purdypuma · 14/08/2022 00:33

Doesn't have to be the case though, Meadowhall & the city centre should be able to co-exist. Look at Manchester & the Trafford Centre for example...

purdypuma · 14/08/2022 00:38

Sheffield City Council are a disgrace...severe lack of vision & ambition for what has the potential to be a fantastic city centre. Instead we end up looking like the poor relative of Leeds & Manchester. Embarrassing.

Backtothenineties · 11/09/2022 03:32

Has this been decided yet?

Florenz · 11/09/2022 15:16

Maybe it should be in Colchester, the newest city.

Fluffyfluffflufffluff · 11/09/2022 15:23

Glasgow pls

User148563 · 11/09/2022 15:30

Please not Birmingham, I don't want Elton John to be postponed again, I bought the tickets in 2019

KnickerlessParsons · 11/09/2022 15:44

Wales has got the Millennium Stadium that holds far more than 10000. I don't think Cardiff made the short list though.

They have shortlisted only places with an indoors arena holding 10k or more.

Roofed stadia do not appear to have qualified anywhere

CTPT · 11/09/2022 19:49

Does anyone know when there is likely to be an announcement?
