"the most dishonest charge of this entire leadership race is the idea that Sunak whacked up taxes because he’s some crazed socialist rather than (squints at notes) authorised to do by Johnson to tackle the biggest health crisis in a century"

twitter.com/pickardje/status/1549873575573716992?s=21&t=VOpiSo0MwSkMz2mZx92DMw

I agree with this.
And for every voter that rejects Sunak because he resigned and let Johnson down - do you not remember how badly Johnson behaved under May? Either very short memories or simply hypocrisy.

Why anyone wants this top job is a mystery. Unless there are other things driving them too?

I mean people climb to the top of Everest despite having to climb past previous climbers who succumbed to the terrain or crawl through unimaginably tight cave and tunnel systems for fun both without any quantifiable reward other than having done it.

people are strange creatures.

I was thinking at the last by elections after Jo Cox and Sir David Amess I'm amazed anyone wants to stand as an MP. But thank god they do.

tobee · 20/07/2022 23:04

Just saw a tiny snippet of the bbc news with Tory members in Derby saying how the 2 candidates were excellent. I mean they would say that I suppose. ...

Team Rishi Sunak here too.
The ones actually allowed a vote might decide he is a traitor.
Liz Truss will carry on like a really bad Labour Party in office and borrow lots of money, but only for business rates cuts.
It's not a good strategy, but I'm hoping she knows what she is doing and chooses a decent chancellor!

The only hope we have is if Truss gets in Sunak gets chancellor back and really fights the PM.

I don't like the idea of more cuts but he's the only one with economic training who sounds plausible and Evan explain his rationale.

Starseeking · 20/07/2022 21:04

By rights Sunak should walk it, if only for the fact he's been Chancellor for some time, and managed to get us through Covid. Yes they borrowed a huge amount, but I'm not sure Labour (who are my preferred party) would have had the balls to do what the Tories did. They made a hell of a lot of mistakes getting there, but overall they did a decent job (apart from all the parties when they thought we weren't looking).

People don't seem to realise that an awful lot of "getting us through Covid" was imply implementing a pandemic action plan that had been in place for years. There was nothing innovative about furlough, for instance. Despite that, they managed not to have enough PPE in place and then wasted billions on buying junk PPE and giving expensive contracts to the government's friends, went into lockdown late, and completely mismanaged care homes leading to thousands of avoidable infections and deaths. That isn't "overall a decent job" particularly when you compare it with the performance of other Western governments.

Gufo · 21/07/2022 07:05

Both terrible, but Rishi will annoy the racist tories more so I have a slight preference for him. Would love to see the frothing over our first BAME PM.

Roussette · 21/07/2022 07:07

Totally agree. But they didn't 'get us through Covid'. People died because they ignored studies and reports pre Covid, setting out what should be done.

It makes me furious that they make out they were prepared in the way they should be pre Covid. That is untrue.

There was a planning exercise in 2016 (due to MERS/SARS) and it warned the Govt they should stockpile PPE and set up the bones of a track and trace system. It was called Exercise Alice and the Govt covered it up because it feared the public would draw the wrong conclusions from it. It has now been released. The report identified that quarantine and isolation was imperative. They ignored that and released hospital patients into care homes.
Look at Dido Harding's T&T. £35 BILLION on a useless system that was not ready and did nothing to help.

itsgettingweird · 21/07/2022 07:45

Agree rousette - they for us through covid and came out the other side with a court ruling they illegally discharged elderly to care homes.

They just use semantics. I know a lot of politics is based on this but Johnson never actually gives answers to questions and just uses these semantic sound bites hoping people will believe them.

It's known to work and the problem is in many ways it has within the general population.

Zonder · 21/07/2022 07:46

I don't understand people saying Rishi is best because of the economy. He has messed us all up.

cakeorwine · 21/07/2022 08:09

This is somewhat embarassing

www.thelondoneconomic.com/news/watch-reactions-as-rishi-sunak-seems-to-think-darlington-is-in-scotland-330065/

Sunak does an interview with Spectator TV. Asked about how he would work with Scotland.

Talks about his economic department he set up in Darlington.

Not only is Darlington not in Scotland, it's just a few miles from his Richmond constituency

www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/news/20292246.rishi-sunak-mentions-darlington-interview-scotland/

Notonthestairs · 21/07/2022 08:28

Zonder - I certainly wasn't suggesting Sunak is best. I just find it ridiculous that the Truss camp have framed Sunak as a socialist and the budgets being nothing to do with Johnson.

As far as I can see Sunak certainly won't lower taxes and may well tighten the screws further. Truss says she will cut tax but with the ERG as her greatest supporters I doubt their focus will be on what is best for ordinary people. The Times reported that Truss has lined up Leadsom as her chancellor and I have no idea what she stands for.

I also note that the pay increases for teaching staff will have to come out of existing budgets. So they are taking money away from school budgets. Disastrous.

DuncinToffee · 21/07/2022 08:42

Yes

Number 10 says the public sector pay deals will have to be funded from within existing budgets: "There are no plans for the treasury to provide any additional resources".

Notonthestairs · 21/07/2022 08:45

It's not like schools were swimming with money before.
I'm sure it's the same in other public services.

Brings to mind,

I say this out loud in my best Scottish accent many a time, so does my DH, it's a bit of a Rou household thing!

I honestly don't know who I want to win.

Safer hands Sunak but more of the same
OR
Truss with the ERG (the party within a party) manipulating her.

For amusement, it would be Truss. But she will destroy the country even more than it is now.

Quia · 21/07/2022 09:30

I lean towards Sunak a bit more just because his approach to taxes is more realistic. It seems to me that the Tory Holy Grail of cutting taxes is a bit of a nonsense. Unless they cut VAT, it won't benefit the lowest paid, and if anything we need to increase taxes at the highest income levels.

borntobequiet · 21/07/2022 09:40

Sunak is a recognisable Thatcherite Tory but pragmatic enough to realise that tax cuts at the present moment could result in the total collapse of public services, which isn’t a vote winner. He was one of the few members of Johnson’s government who projected an aura of intelligence and competence.
Truss, on the other hand, is a made up person living in a fantasy land of her own imagining. In this Narnia inspired vision, she is wise and wonderful, consistent in her beliefs and an engaging and inspiring public speaker. She will provide Turkish Delight for all and we will never get sick of it.

Roussette · 21/07/2022 09:55

God yes, Truss is in a fantasy land. I think she flip flops all over the place because I just don't think she has an inner strength. She wants to be all things to all people. I think she'll rue the day if she becomes PM. She is inheriting a poisened chalice, a lot of people are fed up with the party BJ has left, she has a short time to turn it round before a GE and she just isn't capable IMHO

With Johnson waiting in the wings.

tobee · 21/07/2022 10:10

I thought Leadsom was going to be Mordaunt's chancellor? 🤔

coffeeandbiscuittime · 21/07/2022 10:14

As a nurse I am upset about the proposed pay rises, this is in respect to all public services - I don't like the way that nurses and teachers esp are pitted against each other.
It annoys me that Sunak/Johnson etc have given so much money away to friends under the covid guise and that we are now made to feel guilty for asking for an in-line with inflation pay rise as it will hurt the economy!
I despair for the way our country is being managed and all this talk of how they got the COVID management right really upsets me - they didn't as @Roussette so rightly states.
Having had to watch people die whilst as a health care professional we were left feeling useless will be a legacy that a lot of my medical/ nursing colleagues will take from COVID.
Sunak or Truss - I don't trust either of them to lead us or protect Education/ Health for the common man.

Spot on. The only difference between them is that Sunak is more media savvy and better with the smoke and mirrors so does not appear utterly clueless.

Ah yes you are right. Leadsom was running Mordaunt's campaign wasn't she?
Wonder who Truss would bring in.

tobee · 21/07/2022 10:19

Oh I had wondered if Leadsom was just nailed on to be anyone's chancellor Confused

Roussette · 21/07/2022 10:22

Leadsom is AWFUL. Shock

Not sure if you all have seen this from BBC Newsnight. Truss addressing the LibDem conference and wanting to abolish the Monarchy. Unfortunately, she hasn't improved her delivery. But the ERG aren't worried, she is an empty vessel they can manipulate.

We are going to see this sort of thing for the next 5 weeks as they battle it out.
