Truss has got this wrapped up. The Tories have got their eyes on the next GE, rather than just the leadership. Personally, I don't think UK voters will put an Asian man at their helm, no matter how good he is, compared to the opposition.

I said that about Sunak on another thread and was torn down for being racist. I'm not. But I suspect a lot of the voting public are (even if they would not recognise it as racism).

I'd prefer Sunak over Truss, though actually whoever is most likely to lose the Tories the next election (or maybe the one after that, if the economy is still a mess) would be my favourite. Sunak does seem to have some understanding of the economy, even if he does use it to benefit himself and his rich mates. Truss would probably break it.

ClaudineClare · 20/07/2022 20:20

Thanks for the new thread.

Peter Oborne pulled Johnson to bits on C4 news earlier,

the80sweregreat · 20/07/2022 20:21

I Hope they see sense and vote Sunak
I'd even vote for him and I don't vote conservative in elections!
However gets it has an uphill struggle though

the80sweregreat · 20/07/2022 20:22

Whoever !

BringBackCoffeeCreams · 20/07/2022 20:23

Truss or Sunak? Out of the frying pan we go ...

the80sweregreat · 20/07/2022 20:26

It is frying pan stuff now
If Murdoch said Truss .. then it probably will be

Lottie4 · 20/07/2022 20:30

We're team Sunak as we believe he has a better long term plan. Also, Truss has Rees-Mogg and Dorries on her side, and I certainly wouldn't be voting Conservative if there part of the top team.

the80sweregreat · 20/07/2022 20:38

Team Rishi Sunak here too.
The ones actually allowed a vote might decide he is a traitor.
Liz Truss will carry on like a really bad Labour Party in office and borrow lots of money, but only for business rates cuts.
It's not a good strategy, but I'm hoping she knows what she is doing and chooses a decent chancellor!

cakeorwine · 20/07/2022 20:39

It's the economy......

I wonder what the economic plans are and how trustworthy and realistic are those plans?

basilmint · 20/07/2022 20:51

I was listening on the Radio earlier and apparently Sunak polls much better than Truss among the general voting public but Truss is much preferred by the members. Weird, as you would think they would have an eye on the General Election.

the80sweregreat · 20/07/2022 20:52

The economy is so important though.
In the worst hands it means everything goes wrong :(
I've never voted conservative, but the argument is that Labour ( historically) wreck it because they borrow loads and that is shot now because of covid borrowing which Liz truss wants to be treated differently! It's a difficult argument for anyone and most people are like me , only have a very basic grip on how it all works. I hope the ones voting have a much better idea.
Plus the thought of Jacob Rees Mogg or Nadine Dorries behind LT is enough to make me a bit skeptical of their true motives here ?
Inflation needs to be curbed too.
Tough calls

Sunaks the wrong colour which is worse than being the wrong gender!.
Truss is more pro Brexit which more of the Tory nutcases members will be.

I couldn't give a stuff about his colour. He demonstrated his loyalty to this country by holding a green card. He was given a fpn for attending the same event as Johnson and he pretended to support Johnson until it suited him not to. He's also fucked up the economy leaving the most vulnerable in our society relying on the charity of strangers to be able to eat and millions of people choosing between heating or eating this winter.
He is only in it for himself and I wouldn't trust him as far as I could through him.

Truss just seems incompetent and lacking in judgement.

We are fucked as a country either way unless we can vote out this despicable excuse for a government before they destroy us completely.

the80sweregreat · 20/07/2022 20:55

We do seem doomed.
I sometimes have to try and think a bit more positively because it can make you a bit depressed.
Why anyone wants this top job is a mystery. Unless there are other things driving them too?

By rights Sunak should walk it, if only for the fact he's been Chancellor for some time, and managed to get us through Covid. Yes they borrowed a huge amount, but I'm not sure Labour (who are my preferred party) would have had the balls to do what the Tories did. They made a hell of a lot of mistakes getting there, but overall they did a decent job (apart from all the parties when they thought we weren't looking).

cakeorwine · 20/07/2022 21:06

If Labour had done that, the Tory press would have crucified them for all the money they were borrowing.

I think Sunak is trusted because of what happened in the pandemic.

I mean people climb to the top of Everest despite having to climb past previous climbers who succumbed to the terrain or crawl through unimaginably tight cave and tunnel systems for fun both without any quantifiable reward other than having done it.

people are strange creatures.

Notonthestairs · 20/07/2022 21:07

I read a tweet from Dominic Cummings - my interpretation of his tweet is that Johnson 🛒 supports Truss 💣 because he thinks she'll blow it. Then he'd be able to ride to the rescue. Get Truss Undone.

Obviously I have no idea how true this is - or actually whether I've understood his message!

basilmint · 20/07/2022 21:08

I must admit I am confounded by why Truss is so popular among members when she has come across so poorly during the campaign (and before). Although one of the members interviewed on Radio 4 was saying he would probably vote for Sunak as he was a big Penny Mordaunt fan (yes, they exist) and he thought Truss had been leaking things about Mordaunt to the media. So I think there will be a lot of voting against a candidate they don't like rather than voting for a candidate they do like.

the80sweregreat · 20/07/2022 21:08

I think that Labour would have borrowed for covid too : what choice did they have, really ?
John Mcdonnall was Shadow Chancellor when it went to a cross party consultation and he signed it off ! He agreed it was the only option
Apart from not locking down I guess.
It was going to be a huge debt whoever was in charge :(

the80sweregreat · 20/07/2022 21:10

Yes to Everest.
I'm happy to let others climb it myself !
I am a lightweight though

the80sweregreat · 20/07/2022 21:16

I'm just dreading two more years of Tory in fighting and Liz Truss trying to be the new Mrs T and just all of it. I take an interest in politics and find it fascinating ( even if I don't really understand a lot of it ) but sometimes I wished I didn't as much as it can bog you down a bit too much and then you get the 'whataboutery ' ( fair play ) and on it goes.

jgw1 · 20/07/2022 22:36

the80sweregreat · 20/07/2022 18:23

To think that Boris Johnson spent his entire political career wanting to be the PM ( well, King , but it's as good as ) and he threw it all away by lying. It is sad really , but not surprising
If Liz was known by her real name of Mary it would be Mrs M T : it's not a great omen despite my own username.
Two more years though , it's made me feel a bit depressed tbh :(

I think I heard it reported that Boris said at PMQs that it was mission almost accomplished. Which surely just goes to show he had no plan for what he wanted to achieve as PM, but I guess we knew that anyway.

The great thing about caving is that it is one of the ways one can go to places no one else has been before and then one also gets to name them.

DuncinToffee · 20/07/2022 22:39

Maybe his mission was to beak up the Conservative party?

Notonthestairs · 20/07/2022 22:48

Daily Mail pushing Truss - tax cuts, culture wars and Johnsonian continuity. Going to be interesting to see how Sunak tries to cut through.

I can't be bothered to link to the front page.
