Things that you expected to love but didn't.

I recently tried watching Strictly Ballroom, with the expectation that I'd love it because it ticked so many boxes for me but I didn't enjoy it.

Likewise the Shirley Jackson book, We Have Always Lived In The Castle. It didn't do anything for me and yet so many people rave about it so it's obviously me not the book.

Which things did you think you'd love but didn't?

Elderflower flavoured stuff...smells and tastes like stale deodorant

Jaxhog · 25/06/2022 22:57

Game of thrones

Me too.
Also Wagu beef and truffles. Very overrated.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 25/06/2022 23:01

Hamilton. In fact most Lin Manuel Miranda things.

Calmdown14 · 25/06/2022 23:03

@dizzydizzydizzy aghh truffle pasta is bringing back awful memories of my husband cooking it while I was pregnant and very spewy.

I couldn't go in the house without puking for two days as I could still smell it.

So yes, that can definitely go on my list... although I never actually tried it I don't think I could even five years later as the thought is still making me queasy!

Jaxhog · 25/06/2022 23:05

Another vote for New York (dirty), LA (even dirtier), and Prosecco (fizzy sugar water).

Dummycrusher · 25/06/2022 23:07

@Puffalicious totally with you on the Japanese food. I went to Japan and was SO excited for the food, but to me it really is just a sum of its parts and no more. Like sushi is rice and fish, ramen is noodles and broth. Yeah that's nice, but there's none of the alchemy that you get in other cuisines where your taste buds are exploding and you're like WOW THAT'S AMAZING!

adorablecat · 25/06/2022 23:08

Rainforests (too hot, too humid and you can't see the wildlife for the trees)
Orang-utan sanctuary (they are like wizened old men with disgusting habits)
Whisky

andi62 · 25/06/2022 23:15

Brioche bread, buns, cakes, blah blah.

AngryPrincess · 25/06/2022 23:17

Sailing.

My father and sister did it and I always thought I’d love it.
Actually it’s really hard, physically and trying to figure out how to do it, and it scares me.

Dummycrusher · 25/06/2022 23:21

Paragliding. I felt horrendously sick throughout the entire thing.
Pregnancy. As above.

What’s with the constant MN hate for Biscoff? It’s actually divine, how on earth can anyone not like it? It gets slammed on any threads like this one 🤷🏻‍♀️

It tastes like pre-chewed biscuits to me - so it's a texture thing for me. Funnily enough though, Tesco used to do a Custard Cream spread and a cookie one which I quite liked. Not quite sure of the point though, it was only nice eaten with a spoon.

Most classic novels. It's the language - it's so archaic, I end up losing interest.

I also was not a fan of The Haunting of Hill House (or The House on Haunted Hill - I can never remember the name!). I got about 3/4 of the way through and gave up. It was just boring. I'm sure I missed the best part but I need something to happen in the run up to stay engaged.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 25/06/2022 23:31

Meant to say with the classic novels - every so often I feel like I 'should' read something that's considered 'better' than the sci-fi and horror stuff I prefer. Inevitably I end up not finishing - much more so now I can read anything on my kindle. When I had one book to read on a long journey I would probably plough on!

Crikeyalmighty · 25/06/2022 23:33

Besides the truffle pasta and Dubai- realised I missed off anything by Jane Austen -bores me rigid , be it books or TV

Dummycrusher · 25/06/2022 23:35

Oh as a continuation of that theme - labour and childbirth. Yes, I knew it would be painful, but I was super sporty and knew I would boss it, I couldn't wait, it was going to be hard but AMAZING.

It was fucking terrible and has left me with permanent injuries which mean I won't be able to be 'super sporty' again 💔

You need to try a dry prosecco - much nicer!

frenchfancy81 · 25/06/2022 23:44

Center Parcs- it is fine but not brilliant

icelolly12 · 25/06/2022 23:45

Macaroons- They look soo pretty but imo taste of cardboard.

Salted caramel hot chocolate - too sickly.

out of interest @MissLucyEyelesbarrow what didn't you like about Palermo?

calmlakes · 25/06/2022 23:48

As pp said, 2nd series of Bridgeston....such a disappointment.- I agree with this as well.

Swimming pools, I used to love being in the water but now I just can't be bothered with getting wet outdoors.

You've expressed it far better than I could. Yes, it's missing that explosio n!

Others:

Bungee jumping. I'm a bit of an extroverted dare-devil and thought I'd love it, the freedom, the thrill: hated it, felt sick throughout, fainted afterwards!

A water birth. Again, I'm an advanced scuba diver, consider myself part-fish and all that. Thought it was naturally where I'd have my baby: my bare arse hit the water and I was like "Nooooooooo'. Midwives must have cursed me!

QueenOfHiraeth · 25/06/2022 23:53

Cheese
Red wine
Olives
Truffles
Historical dramas on TV
Opera and ballet
Hot milky drinks - cappucinos, lattes and hot chocolates, bleeurgh!
Any book by Marian Keyes, I swear they are all the same
Cropped pants and pleated skirts, I look like a barrel in both

Puffalicious · 25/06/2022 23:58

Cheese? Cheese?! Omg Cheese is life! If only i could stop eating it I'd be svelte and gorgeous!

dropthevipers · 26/06/2022 00:03

Cocaine. Being a dedicated druggie in my younger years the PR surrounding it made me think it would be great. Horrible. Just talk shit for hours and cuts you off from everything. UGH!

Biffatcrafts · 26/06/2022 00:03

Agree with a PP about Nando's - I really wanted to love it as DH raves about the food, but I just couldn't. Just not my taste I guess 😕

Cruises - again I hoped I would love the whole "see the world from the comfort of" experience but instead felt like I spent 3 weeks trapped inside a weird human zoo staffed by artificially nice but super officious wardens. Truly has now become my worst nightmare. 😱🤣
