Things that you expected to love but didn't.

I recently tried watching Strictly Ballroom, with the expectation that I'd love it because it ticked so many boxes for me but I didn't enjoy it.

Likewise the Shirley Jackson book, We Have Always Lived In The Castle. It didn't do anything for me and yet so many people rave about it so it's obviously me not the book.

Which things did you think you'd love but didn't?

Wolf Hall. Should have been my favourite book of all time.

PermanentTemporary · 25/06/2022 22:03

Festivals
Tequila
Slow Horses books (haven't bothered with the telly series)
Breaking Bad

GrouchyKiwi · 25/06/2022 22:08

Agree with:
Krispy Kreme
Downton Abbey
Bridgerton series 2

I thought I'd love reading to my children. I was looking forward to it so much. But I hate it. Haaaaate. And we're home educating so I do a lot of it. DH does their bedtime stories because of this. He loves it.

I did, however, love teaching them to read.

Fencing. (As in swordplay, not building fences :-)). Always wanted to try it but was too shy to join my university club. Finally did a trial class in my late 30s and just didn’t love it.

The middle-aged iteration of my childhood sweetheart husband.

Galliano · 25/06/2022 22:14

Agree with all the disappointing books mentioned and add Elinor Oliphant and Time Traveller’s Wife.
Waitrose have recently seriously disappointed me with unremarkable gunpowder potatoes in their summer range - was so optimistic they were going to be like the Dishoom ones.
Pre-covid did a lot of long haul business flights - totally underwhelming. I’ll take them over economy but still a grim experience.

I loooove reading but anything and everything by Salman Rushdie I try and try, and try some more because I feel I should love it, but can never finish.

Me too! I really want to like Midnight’s Children.

KissThaRain · 25/06/2022 22:14

Anne of green gables books - love love love the films but boy does LM Montgomery go on and on and on in some chapters . I’ve only read the first 3 books and never again.

lolil · 25/06/2022 22:15

Phantom of the opera.

Mrsjayy · 25/06/2022 22:18

Time travellers wife made me want to poke my eyes out ! It's so annoying

Worldwide2 · 25/06/2022 22:19

Flavoured gin
Oreos
Wicked the show

MidnightsFoodbowl · 25/06/2022 22:19

Hot tubs - my husband could stay forever, I've had enough after about 30 seconds
Glastonbury on the TV - never show the interesting bits/ stages, and this year I don't recognise most of the acts (I'm obviously past it)
Dominos (& most other takeaway pizzas) - the choice of veggie toppings is always really uninspiring, and they're so expensive

Puffalicious · 25/06/2022 22:20

Breaking Bad - I was really bored.
Five Guys- overpriced McDonald's.
Japanese food- over-priced and pretty tastless (maybe cos I'm veggie?)
Doc Martens - they're much heavier than I remember.

PlanetNormal · 25/06/2022 22:21

Festivals.

I first went to one in my mid 30s and, although I enjoyed some of the bands I quickly realised that I had become rather more middle-aged & middle class than I thought I was. Turns out my minimum requirements to have a fun time include a good, quiet night’s sleep in a proper bed, a hot shower (taken alone) and hygienic toilets & hand washing facilities.

Velvian · 25/06/2022 22:24

I've started reading Midnight's Children so many times, but just could not get into it.

Afternoon tea, I always love the idea, but always disappointing.

Loose leaf teas, I'd rather have Tetley tea bags.

Airfriedpotatowitch · 25/06/2022 22:25

Biscoff-as if someone soaked some rich tea biscuits in tea then mushed them up to a sugary disgusting paste bleugh
Time travellers wife on teli really irritating and boring
Los angeles
Paris
Durian fruit tastes just like the smell

Katya213 · 25/06/2022 22:26

New York

AnnieSnap · 25/06/2022 22:30

400/500 thread count linen sheets. I prefer 200TC as it’s crisper and the higher ones a silky. I prefer crisp!
Strictly Come Dancing - despite DH and I attend dancing lessons when we tried it!

HRHBreathMints · 25/06/2022 22:31

Olives. They tick everything - salty, savoury but ugh I cannot eat them

FartyBrainedHippo · 25/06/2022 22:31

Apperol spritz
Gin
Gnocchi

Day 6 of a diet, and I can only think of food and drink!

WheelofLife · 25/06/2022 22:33

Cyrano. I love Peter Dinklage and thought the trailer looked brilliant. OH fell asleep and I went to bed half way through

Byebyecobwebs · 25/06/2022 22:41

Def Krispy creme, give me a proper old fashioned jam donut any day.
peanut butter (but I love satay sauce 🤦‍♀️)
historical novels
novels that win prizes (I just love chicklit)
knitting, crochet,
patchwork, why cut up fabric to sew it back together again

Crikeyalmighty · 25/06/2022 22:43

@dizzydizzydizzy Yep, that's it - sweaty armpits taste - revolting!!

thebear1 · 25/06/2022 22:43

Champagne, don't like anything about it.

brighteyesburninglikefire · 25/06/2022 22:44

Being a parent. I mostly just tolerate my kids. I can't understand how women feel immense joy and satisfaction through being a "mother" I have never felt the need to have so many hobbies, until I had children

Giggorata · 25/06/2022 22:46

Westworld. Tried and failed to get through series one, twice. Finally struggled through it without enthusiasm and gave up forever early in series two.

Star Trek Discovery. Just couldn't get into it. I'm usually such a Trekkie, too. I will try again…
