... delicious.

It gives me The Ick. Hate it. When I am Queen it shall be executed. Ironically I don't really mind the worst moist, which is universally hated. What words do you hate? Don't really like the word "meal" either. It's just so... weak.

I hate the word ‘meal’ with a passion. My mother always used this word and even as a kid it drove me mad. She’s even said to me ‘has the dog had her meal’ aaargh 😖

AffIt · 30/05/2022 11:40

Tasty. I absolutely loathe it.

Like the OP's 'delicious', it gives me the absolute ick and is often enough to put me off the food I'm eating if somebody uses it as a descriptor.

It makes me think of pigs or dogs troughing down on food, with all the accompanying lip-smacking, chewing and appreciative noises (it probably won't come as a huge surprise to learn that I also have mild misophonia related to eating noises).

I also hate portion!

And nutritious. And meal. A portion of a nutritious meal.. awful.

That made me laugh😁 My son hates the word portion (after me saying fish portion a few times) and threatened to leave home if I uttered the word again.

Another vote for ‘panties’ 😖 thankfully not really used in UK but Americans why? To me it conjures up worn, warm knickers in need of a wash and a perv’s dream🤮

LaMarschallin · 30/05/2022 12:05

Not a particular word, but the food ones have reminded me how much I'm irritated by someone ordering something to eat by using the exact wording on the menu:
"I'll have the belly pork roasted with seasonal vegetables with apple stuffing and a cider jus, please" for example, instead of "I'll have the pork please ".
Or "The belly pork, please" if there's an alternative pork offering.

Oh God, I've never heard anyone do that! It'd put me right off my food (and them).

I don't blame him. Why are you announcing that dinner will be fish portions, instead of fish?!

Well, 'fish portions' is better than 'cod pieces', which is what one local restaurant had on their menus for quite a while 😁

It was called that on the box (breaded fish) he said yuck don’t say that so I called it that again next time just to be annoying (😳). He threatened to leave 😁 I don’t say it anymore and don’t even buy them nowadays.

Envision - is it a real word? 'I envisioned' no, it should be 'envisaged' or imagined.

Funny you say meal. My mum always goes on about having a meal, needing a meal, eating a meal, etc etc. Really bloody annoys me!

Mine says "a (good) feed".

🤮. Does she serve it in a trough?

Penguinevere · 31/05/2022 12:27

Curious. What’s the problem with the word “meal”?

AgentMagenta · 31/05/2022 13:28

Ugh, just the sound of it, the way you have to squish the inside of your mouth to pronounce it. I dislike the name Amelia because of the 'meal' sound in it.

I just hate the sound of the word. It reminds me of that disgusting sound when you're mixing something stodgy or fatty together, like say when you're cooking mince and have to stir it/mix it to break it up as it cooks.

Secondly for some reason makes me think of a really miserly amount being served, like here's your meal of bread and cheese and you ain't getting any seconds or dessert.

I suspect it’s seen as common. You’ll get a lot of lofty replies about this, that and the other, but ultimately: meal is non-U.
