What is the one spot on earth that took your breath away?

Part inspired by a thread I just read about Switzerland and happy memories of beautiful scenes there.

What is the single most beautiful scene / spot / vista / landscape you've ever seen? Anywhere in the world. Pictures encouraged!

Mine (funnily enough) is not Switzerland but Bavaria. Lake Konigsee. So incredibly picturesque that it doesn't seem real.

(The Matterhorn reflected in a lake up the mountain from Zermatt is a very close second though)

I think Milford sound in new Zealand. Also Niagara falls.

Menopants · 24/05/2022 23:12

Applecross in scotland

can’t decide between my top two:
Arches National Park in the US
Chengdu Bamboo Forest in China

Venice. Amazing to be on a boat, looking back at the water.

CrabbyCat · 24/05/2022 23:25

Lemaire Channel, Antarctic Peninsula. Absolutely stunning, don't have any photos on my phone though.

Crisscrossquiz · 24/05/2022 23:26

Sedona in Arizona. I felt like I'd landed on Mars.

Finland in winter. It was like being on the set of Narnia. The trees were so laden with snow they looked like sculptures. And the silence. Absolutely magical.

I would love to go to Switzerland. And Norway.

Honeyroar · 24/05/2022 23:26

Rio.

MarmiteCoriander · 24/05/2022 23:27

Gullfoss falls Iceland in winter

The view from our hotel in Reykjavik. We'd arrived in the dark, but the next day, awoke to see the most stunning, snow capped mountains in the distance

whiteroseredrose · 24/05/2022 23:30

The Grand Canyon, about halfway down.

FelicityBeedle · 24/05/2022 23:31

Zermatt in Switzerland is pretty up there, it took a few days and then I just went ‘holy fuck that’s the perfect view’.

Everytime I look up and over the scree and the hills to the left at the far edge of wasdale there’s a sense of wonder, I don’t think that’ll ever fade

AmperoBlue · 24/05/2022 23:32

The view from the Eze cactus garden over the French Riviera.
I mean every flipping view along the coast is life afirmingly beautiful and you run out of superlatives very quickly . The view from Eze village itself is obscured by the village walls but then, wowsers, the endless sea and sky from the garden is literally like looking into heaven.

FelicityBeedle · 24/05/2022 23:32

oh I didn’t even see that you’d mentioned zermatt!

MummyRR · 24/05/2022 23:33

Hunza Valley, Pakistan

Jelly4444 · 24/05/2022 23:33

I have so many but I think the views around Lake Garda and the Amalfi Coast have to be some of the most beautiful views in the world.

Also, the views from Victoria Peak and from the Star Ferry in Hong Kong are pretty amazing too in a different way.

LittleMissNaughty2022 · 24/05/2022 23:34

Luskentyre, I walk there every day and never get tired of the view.

Waimea canyon in Hawaii, was the place that made me lose my breath. I think partly because I wasn’t expecting it (pre smart phone days and we hadn’t done much research!).

I’d love to see the Grand Canyon.

Ticksallboxes · 24/05/2022 23:41

The view from our balcony, across an Edwardian square down to the sea. Julie Burchill called it the most beautiful square in England in the 90s and she's not wrong.

ZetaPuppis · 24/05/2022 23:45

Seeing the Milky Way from the top of mount Haleakala in Hawaii.

Cleebope2 · 24/05/2022 23:47

Iguazu falls Brazil, huge and incredible

HerRoyalNotness · 24/05/2022 23:48

Any snow laden landscape is breathtaking for me.

also hiking the Inca trail and the last morning rounding a corner as the sun is rising over Machu Picchu. Amazing.

Cuckoo48 · 24/05/2022 23:50

Tacky by daylight, but arriving in NYC for the first time in the early evening and after dinner, walking to see Times Square at night. That took my breath away; not so much the lights themselves but more that I was actually AT this iconic spot.

Shangrilalala · 24/05/2022 23:51

The view of Table Mountain from Bloubergstrand. White sand, sea spray and searing sunlight and the most magical backdrop.

honeybushbunch · 24/05/2022 23:54

Various places in the Cairngorms I remember taking my breath away they were so beautiful.
