What is the one spot on earth that took your breath away?

Part inspired by a thread I just read about Switzerland and happy memories of beautiful scenes there.

What is the single most beautiful scene / spot / vista / landscape you've ever seen? Anywhere in the world. Pictures encouraged!

Mine (funnily enough) is not Switzerland but Bavaria. Lake Konigsee. So incredibly picturesque that it doesn't seem real.

(The Matterhorn reflected in a lake up the mountain from Zermatt is a very close second though)

Ireland - The coast line from Cork to Donegal is stunning. If only we had the weather!

MakingNBaking · 25/05/2022 08:15

Nun's Valley on the island of Madeira is a very close second, on the right day it's like swimming in silence.

Oooh yes Cirque de Navacelles is special! We went for a long hike around there, along a tiny stream that had huge blue dragonflies hovering above it. I still daydream about it and it was nearly 20 years ago.

Most of the Scottish lochs

Another vote for the Ngorongoro Crater - arrived early one morning to see it appearing from the mist. The vastness of it is just breathtaking.

I couldn't remember the name of the area where the volcanic lakes were earlier. It is Sete Cidades. They were prettier in real life than the image in the brochure.

Conwy is beautiful, especially the approach from across the river.

Driving through the Salar de Uyuni and the Atacama desert through Bolivia to Chile. Hours of traveling with no other tourists in sight across the most surreal landscape - flocks of flamingos in bright red and green lakes. Totally barren. At night the clearest sky with stunningly bright stars.

Most amazing trip of my life.

LetsGoWithTheFlo · 25/05/2022 08:55

Torres del Paine national park in Chilean Patagonia. It was so beautiful I actually teared up.

Also, camping in the Atacama desert and looking up at the night sky was breathtakingly beautiful. You can see the milky way and billions of stars.

LetsGoWithTheFlo · 25/05/2022 08:57

MrsEdnaWelthorpe you beat me to it! The Atacama desert is one of the most beautiful places I've ever visited.

IsabelHerna · 25/05/2022 08:57

A hiking trail in northern Greece, where I found a small stream of water. No one was around for miles, the nature was beautiful and the water so fresh. I stayed there for a couple of hours just taking it all in.

chipsandpeas · 25/05/2022 09:00

the grand canyon - was utterly amazing, and i was only at the bit where the sky walk is, not the offical national park so i can only imagine how beautiful it is there
the plane landing in vegas was a bit of a wow factor as well, dark black skys then suddenly you see all the lights from the strip
the pyramids, it had been a dream from being a kid to see them so it was definately a moment when i finally did

Gufo · 25/05/2022 09:02

This is such an Envy making thread! I would love to go to Chile and Bolivia later this year.

I've travelled a lot and for me I think the Grand Canyon was the jaw dropping inspiring place I've been to.

(to the pp who's been to Hunza valley I'm Envy Envy )

The top of Table Mountain , Boulders Beach and driving up Chapmans Peak all in South Africa
The beaches at Tioman Island Malaysia

LadyEloise1 · 25/05/2022 09:13

Entering Venice by boat obviously.
It was more stunning than I had imagined it would be.

VaVaVoombangabang · 25/05/2022 09:15

Black Canyon of the Gunnison in Western Colorado, spectacular colours, but many others in Colorado, this was almost 30 years ago and can still remember the thrill.

Can I have another one?

The view from Zugspitz in Germany, on a clear day you can see 4 county's, Germany, Austria Italy and Switzerland, I just sat for ages, took my breath away.

Konigsee a fantastic place OP been many times.

gertrudemortimer · 25/05/2022 09:22

Had to steal the photo from my ex but I think it's glencoe or near there in Scotland. The light was perfect

The fjords of Norway (in to Olden particularly) and Iceland (in to Akureryri). We did it on a cruise and woke up in the morning, opened our curtains and just watched this beautiful scenery slowly go by - absolutely stunning.

Many places in New Zealand also but the scenery along the A82 in Scotland is gorgeous too.

PipeScatter · 25/05/2022 09:23
