What is the one spot on earth that took your breath away?

Part inspired by a thread I just read about Switzerland and happy memories of beautiful scenes there.

What is the single most beautiful scene / spot / vista / landscape you've ever seen? Anywhere in the world. Pictures encouraged!

Mine (funnily enough) is not Switzerland but Bavaria. Lake Konigsee. So incredibly picturesque that it doesn't seem real.

(The Matterhorn reflected in a lake up the mountain from Zermatt is a very close second though)

Sometimes I think it's right place at the right time. This is 5 minutes from where I live. I love this picture and I always miss spring when it turns to summer.

Morzine, French Alps

Peyto Lake in the Canadian Rockies. Just amazing, as was most of the Icefields Parkway drive.

Looking out to sea near Caherdaniel Co Kerry Ireland.
Just gorgeous.
And I've been to Kerry many times.

Yes, the Lake District is stunning!

@nearlyspringyay You've just reminded me of the time I saw bioluminescent algae in Ha long Bay Vietnam. It really did take my breath away when I spotted it. I was with a group and we spent a good couple of hours watching it. Difficult to capture on camera, easier with Live Photos and videos.

The view from the top of Mount San Jacinto in Palm Springs is incredible as was laid on the beach at midnight on Tilos a small Greek island watching the stars

EmbroidedFlowers · 25/05/2022 13:41

The most beautiful sunset in Santorini made me feel so peaceful and awed.
On the flip side, looking down on Times Square was incredible.
Both are moments I'll always remember.

The view from the Eze cactus garden over the French Riviera.
I mean every flipping view along the coast is life afirmingly beautiful and you run out of superlatives very quickly . The view from Eze village itself is obscured by the village walls but then, wowsers, the endless sea and sky from the garden is literally like looking into heaven.

That is a pretty view. And one I know well.

Luskentyre, I walk there every day and never get tired of the view.

Yes! I'm from Cornwall where the beaches can be sublime. But even I had to agree it's a stunner.

Somewhere deep in the Sahara desert, at night, looking up at the stars. They looked so near, so sharp, like diamonds on velvet.

I had this feeling in Oman. We got up early, saw the sun rise over camp and the stars fade. Then looked down to see a myriad of animal tracks - clearly the desert is way more active at night.

ImInStealthMode · 25/05/2022 14:35

Oooh you've reminded me of another one! Not a 'view' so much as an experience. Bioluminescence at low tide on the beach here in Jersey. I've lived here 20 years and had no idea until we went on a guided walk. Absolutely stunning; we could write our names in the sand with a stick and it would light up! We threw a couple of little stones into rock pools and it looked like fireworks were going off under the water. Unforgettable moments.

Lake Bohinj, just along from Bled in Slovenia. It's less developed and has a beautiful peaceful atmosphere.

TargusEasting · 25/05/2022 19:41

I remember walking into the Sistine Chapel in The Vatican. It didn't do anything for me but a lady nearby gasped and screamed before clutching her husband's arm so tightly it almost bled.

ArtVandalay · 25/05/2022 19:54

Think the Sistine chapel
woman was a MNer.

I loved the Sistine chapel, but the Pieta afterwards genuinely moved me to tears.

OMG did you witness the Sistine Screamer?!?!?!?!

Amazing derailment. I'd be annoyed but honestly tell us MORE. Did tourists try to console her? Did her husband wander off muttering 'FFS' under his breath? Wink

Halong Bay in Vietnam. I could cruise around those island forever.

Agreed, Ha Long Bay is magnificent! Truly stunning and so much to look at and take in, yet so peaceful!

FleeceNavidadfromtheSheep · 26/05/2022 06:42

Flying from Bahamas to Fort Lauderdale sitting up front in a tiny plane, the sea was truly turquoise and crystal clear.

Also agree arriving in Venice by train, or taking the water taxi from the airport to St Marks Square are both extraordinary.

The Alps above the cloud base with only peaks visible in the sunshine - magical.
