What is the one spot on earth that took your breath away?

Part inspired by a thread I just read about Switzerland and happy memories of beautiful scenes there.

What is the single most beautiful scene / spot / vista / landscape you've ever seen? Anywhere in the world. Pictures encouraged!

Mine (funnily enough) is not Switzerland but Bavaria. Lake Konigsee. So incredibly picturesque that it doesn't seem real.

(The Matterhorn reflected in a lake up the mountain from Zermatt is a very close second though)

I'll correct myself, it's glen affric! Beautiful place

Citygirly · 25/05/2022 09:27

I'll also add the Amalfi Coast! So picturesque, you can hardly believe it's real

Gruyère in Switzerland. The old fortified town up on the hill. The view from the castle with snow capped Alps within touching distance took my breath away.

The view from the top of Chevannes ski lift in Les Gets in the Portes du Soleil resorts. It’s breathtaking to see the valleys stretching away all around.

Would be a toss up for me between-

The top of the Aguile du midi, high up on Mont Blanc, and standing infront of the face of Langtang, a 7000 metre peak in the Himalayas, watching avalanches cascade down its cliff face.

For me

The view at the top of the Eiger fromthe
Jungfrau station - absolutely stunning and so tranquil.

The view coming into Venice by water taxi

Amalfi coast and Capri

Portofino

Bamburgh castle from Bamburgh beach in Northumberland. In all seasons!

Big Sur did it for me

Crazykatie · 25/05/2022 10:21

Isabella Island in the Galapagos is the nearest thing to paradise I have ever visited, second favourite and more easily visited, a lodge overlooking Lake Malawi in Africa.

Yes, I like it hot.

Always lived in London and hadn't travelled much, went to courtmacsherry in Ireland for a weekend in my early 20s and remember looking up at the stars and just being so enthralled by how many there were.

Bemoreatticus · 25/05/2022 10:38

Briksdal glacier in Olden, Norway
View from the cliff top in Taormina, Sicily
View across The Nile to elephantine Island in Aswan, Egypt at sunset
Waking up to a view of Ullswater with mist rolling across the fells.

Lindisfarne1 · 25/05/2022 10:39

Oh also Donegal, beaches and the wild countryside

Songoftheseas · 25/05/2022 10:40

Greece, travelling across the country by old-fashioned train at the turn of this century. Beautiful doesn’t even seem adequate as a description, it was simply breathtaking.

GrouchyKiwi · 25/05/2022 10:44

Lake Tekapo, NZ, with the Church of the Good Shepherd, the lupins in bloom, and Aoraki/Mt Cook rising majestically behind the lake. Just perfection.

Lake Bled in Slovenia, with the beautiful island in the middle.

A mountain pass in Norway, on the way to Geiranger Fjord. I can't remember the name, but driving up through the mountains with a sheer drop to the side, clear blue skies, and a little bit of misty cloud adding mystery was a wonderful experience.

Shmithecat2 · 25/05/2022 10:47

Ha Long Bay. Other worldy.

Shmithecat2 · 25/05/2022 10:48

Although the beauty and sheer size of Lake Garda was also jaw dropping too.

Nocaloriesinchocolate · 25/05/2022 10:49

I saw this thread and thought I wouldn’t post because I didn’t want to encourage hordes of people! (Selfishness alert!) Then I saw the OP had mentioned it. Yes, yes, yes, Konigssee and the whole area - the view from the top of the Eagles Nest and the multiple views from the Rossfeldstrasse

GrandPrismatic · 25/05/2022 10:53

Well my username prolly gives it away but the grand prismatic spring in Yellowstone was wonderful to see. Infact the whole of Yellowstone was a complete delight. In particular unexpected geyser eruptions. One morning I sat in front of Old Faithful - had the place to myself just as sun was rising and just watched in awe as it let rip with such ferocity and force….it was very humbling to see nature so active.

Also agree with PP who said Jenny lake in Grande Teton…stunning. We did Yellowstone and Grande Teton in the same trip. Mind totally blown.

Nocaloriesinchocolate · 25/05/2022 10:53

Oh, and the view of the old town of Salzburg from the rooftop restaurant on the other side of the river

maddy68 · 25/05/2022 10:54

Cangost in Spain. Breathtaking

SirSidneyRuffDiamond · 25/05/2022 10:55

View from Sgurr Alasdair, Skye

View of Fishtail Mountain, Nepal

Both made me gasp and feel more alive.

PraiseBee · 25/05/2022 10:55

Yosemite in the snow was magical to me
