What is the one spot on earth that took your breath away?

Part inspired by a thread I just read about Switzerland and happy memories of beautiful scenes there.

What is the single most beautiful scene / spot / vista / landscape you've ever seen? Anywhere in the world. Pictures encouraged!

Mine (funnily enough) is not Switzerland but Bavaria. Lake Konigsee. So incredibly picturesque that it doesn't seem real.

(The Matterhorn reflected in a lake up the mountain from Zermatt is a very close second though)

What is the one spot on earth that took your breath away?

A place we scuba dived in Turkey called "The Wall" I remember just floating there thinking "wow"

And the Last section at the Harry Potter studio tour. I'm so glad I didn't know what was in that bit until I got there. Not even ashamed to say I cried. Both times I've been Grin

sometimes I think I'm not sophisticated enough for MN Grin

Inhotim. I don't know how to explain it!

The Cliffs of Moher. In the pissing rain, blowing a gale, the sky was so overcast. We were the only people there and it was glorious. Genuinely one of my favourite moments ever.

@SacreBlue , so much of NI is incredibly beautiful. Rugged, and craggy, and amazing. I love the sight of the Mourne Mountains. Oh, and The Gobbins.

Rome, too. There's not a bit of Rome that I don't find stunning. I could just walk random streets around Rome all day and it'd make me so very happy.

The Gilli Islands, Indonesia, seeing them from Lombok, and then actually being there.
Tiny islands with no motorised vehicles, and absolutely picture perfect.

Loch an Eilein near Aviemore, Scotland. Late afternoon getting dark, seeing the nearby landscape reflected on the dark lake.

The Peak in Hong Kong at night, looking down over the illuminated city.

I would take a cityscape over countryside any day.

Skinterior · 25/05/2022 06:11

The Bund in Shanghai - completely mental but also wonderful.

Pictures don't do it any justice at all, it's the atmosphere that blows you away.

Frenchfancy · 25/05/2022 06:16

The grand canyon for me to. Away from the visitor center it is stunningly beautiful.

Also Uxmal in Mexico.

Gullfoss falls Iceland in winter

The view from our hotel in Reykjavik. We'd arrived in the dark, but the next day, awoke to see the most stunning, snow capped mountains in the distance

I've just arrived to say here too. Stunning!

Uganda. The whole country; the Nile, the bright red earth and green vegetation. The sky and earth and water. Words cannot describe it. Although Winston Churchill came close with 'the pearl of Africa'.

I also met some of the nicest people there, which helps.

YukoandHiro · 25/05/2022 06:32

As a PP said, arriving in Venice by train is a heartstopping experience

Punxsutawney · 25/05/2022 06:35

The visitor center at the top of the Mauna kea volcano in Hawaii.

We had driven for about 3 hours through cloud and rain to get up there. And then all of a sudden we were above the cloud and it was completely clear.
As night falls they have telescopes for the public to use.
It felt like the milky way was so close, we could touch it.
Youngest Ds was 8 at the time and adored astronomy. I was glad that we could give him that experience. Especially as he can now barely leave on our house.
It's a real privilege to be able to travel and I didn't appreciate how lucky we were, until Ds's health meant that we couldn't do it anymore.

Lake Bled Slovenia

Timanfaya National park lanzarote - not breath taking for beauty as much as just surrealnwss and vastness.

Lampan · 25/05/2022 06:37

Jenny Lake in Grand Teton National Park moved me to tears!

custardbear · 25/05/2022 06:39

Not so much a place but on honeymoon we were on an evening safari in Africa, the moon was enormous and we'd stopped to view it, a wind blew through us that was just magical, a moment I hope I'll never forget

SquatBetty · 25/05/2022 06:44

I'm going to lower the tone massively now and say flying into Las Vegas at night and seeing the Strip all lit up from the air was pretty amazing!
