Or no one ever talks about them anymore.

I will offer chocolate covered cornflakes, which used to be in high street baker's windows every eater with confectionary eggs atop. A staple home economics recipe, I recall running home from school with a large tin, convinced that I was going to blow everyone's mind with my culinary genius.

And Spam. Like 'corned beef', but the pork version, also in a tin. That curious shape, reminded me of feeding the cat. My DH watches a lot of wild camping/van man stuff in Japan on youtube and it seems to be having a resurgence..

Spam has long been popular in Asia, in Japan but especially in Hong Kong!

Chocolate cornflake cake never got the respect it deserves Sad

lecreusetpeppermill · 18/05/2022 22:03

The choc was always flat though, never creamy or sugary. It was such a let down after a life of dairy milk.

Brandy Snaps - staple at Christmas. Ne’er to be seen or found these days.

Haslet - Dry, like slices of an over flamed kebab left out in the sun. Horse meat mainly, but the taste was irrelevant. The novelty was in the table discussion on how to pronounce it - Has-let or Haze-Let.

Marrow - stuffed with meat, maybe cheese and brought to the table. Just don’t see it anymore other than under Keith’s arm on way back from allotment. Keith doesn’t like it either.

lecreusetpeppermill · 18/05/2022 22:14

Ive honestly never heard of stuffed marrow!

I am now reminded of angel delight. I think it's still out there.

Fish in a bag

childhood memories!

Latenightreader · 18/05/2022 22:16

I used to cook spam regularly in my previous job, and we love marrow stuffed with (quorn) mince!

I raise you tinned ratatouille. Height of exotic sophistication to me in 1980s Norfolk.

MintyGreenDream · 18/05/2022 22:16

You can get haslet at any supermarket deli and spam is at all supermarkets

youkiddingme · 18/05/2022 22:16

I had Spam salad for lunch yesterday.

EspeciallyDistracted · 18/05/2022 22:17

I spotted Angel Delight ice cream in Iceland today but resisted buying it

HerbErtlinger · 18/05/2022 22:18

My dad used to make stuffed marrow when we were kids. Grim. You dont see them anymore.
Spam is still available, my guilty pleasure is a grilled spam sandwich

TheDogsMother · 18/05/2022 22:18

Gala Pie

BearBibble · 18/05/2022 22:18

Spam is still in every major supermarket I go to. DH goes through tins and tins of the stuff 🤮
I remember Mr Kiplings caramel shortbreads. They had a sort of figure of eight pattern piped onto the top in chocolate and they were just perfection. Haven't seen them in donkeys.

Gliblet · 18/05/2022 22:18

Supermousse - I have very (probably unreasonably) fond memories of those weird little tubs of frozen foam/mousse/sponge Grin

Oh, and Birds instant hot lemon crunch pudding. It probably tasted like disinfectant, most artificial lemon flavour things do, but to my childhood taste buds it was absolutely divine.

@Latenightreader tinned ratatouille is on our menu for tomorrow!! Bought some for camping and it's been sat in the garage all year

TheSpottedZebra · 18/05/2022 22:20

Ooh those choc fudge cakes from the freezer where you microwaved it and it got slightly melty.

Or maybe it was Mississippi Mud Pie?

Izzy24 · 18/05/2022 22:22

Ice magic (I say this every time a thread like this comes up 😂)

CornishPorsche · 18/05/2022 22:22

We had Angel Delight a few weeks ago for reminiscence sake!

As a kid in Scotland it was snowballs - huge cake balls, split with jam and covered in coconut. I'm in England now, they just don't exist here and the occasional supermarket one I find is terrible.

FabulousKilljoys · 18/05/2022 22:23

Those puddings where you poured hot water on the mix, baked it and it made sponge at the top and sauce underneath. There was a lemon one and a chocolate one.

Supermousse from the freezer cabinet and we always ate them before they defrosted.

Goblin puddings. We had them with chips and peas every week when I was a kid.

GeorgesMarvelousCalpol · 18/05/2022 22:23

I remember hazlet, I used to work in a deli as a teenager in the early 90s and it was popular then. I had completely forgotten about it until now!
Also, now I've remembered Brawn too! It was gelatinous & bright pink. I had to look it up to see what it was, it's a "meat jelly made from pork".

User7493268965 · 18/05/2022 22:24

We used to have liver and kidneys weekly, it doesn't seem as popular now, DM used to like tripe which was vile.

suet pudding

PieonaBarm · 18/05/2022 22:25

Heinz tinned puddings that you boiled in a pan of water. They were lush!

Crikeyalmighty · 18/05/2022 22:27

I buy tinned ratatouille still, great diet food on a small portion of pasta or rice , cheap and no fuss
