Or no one ever talks about them anymore.

I will offer chocolate covered cornflakes, which used to be in high street baker's windows every eater with confectionary eggs atop. A staple home economics recipe, I recall running home from school with a large tin, convinced that I was going to blow everyone's mind with my culinary genius.

And Spam. Like 'corned beef', but the pork version, also in a tin. That curious shape, reminded me of feeding the cat. My DH watches a lot of wild camping/van man stuff in Japan on youtube and it seems to be having a resurgence..

Bovril flavoured crisps!

ButtockUp · 18/05/2022 23:33

Burtons potato puffs

Heinz tinned vegetable salad... make my own but it's not the same.

My mum used to make ( 1970s) a flan consisting of a pre-made spongey flan base which would get drained , tinned mandarin slices put in then the juice used to be mixed with a sachet of 'QuickSet.' ( as I recall.)

As a toddler in the 70's I ate so much angel delight I vomited and could never touch it after that.
I also vomited after eating a fairly large section of a littlewoods/freemans catalogue because I liked the smell of the pages.

Does anyone remember Piglets?

Justleaveitblankthen · 18/05/2022 23:39

@CornishPorsche Snowballs are available everywhere! Tesco, Asda, Home & Bargains..

Southlandssue · 18/05/2022 23:40

That flan was one of the first recipes I did in a home economics lesson 1989. Was it called quick gel?

AnElegantChaos · 18/05/2022 23:40

Possibly one for gen x but does anyone remember Rock n Roller crisps? Like hollowed out half-spheres?

@lecreusetpeppermill The smell of a brand new catalogue was amazing! And the excitement was almost too much when it popped through the letterbox

lecreusetpeppermill · 18/05/2022 23:41

Primula cheese in a tube!

Plain boiled (peeled) potatoes. We used to have these with everything but I'd never make them now! It's either boiled new potatoes, or mash. I used to love them so no idea why I don't make them, but you never see them anywhere either. Definitely out of fashion!

FruityPolos · 18/05/2022 23:43

As a kid in the 80s we used to get a large flat round chocolate covered Rice Krispie cake separated out into slices (like a pizza) which had raisins in it. And randomly had Flintstones on the wrapper! I think it came from Tesco.

seashaken · 18/05/2022 23:44

Soft herring roes were a childhood staple, haven't seen them for decades. Mum would fry them and we'd have them on toast. Lovely.

Ciko · 18/05/2022 23:44

Birds eye potato fritters.
Noodle doodles (pasta shapes in tomato sauce).

L0stinCyberspace · 18/05/2022 23:44

Oooh love this retro thread!
Thanks for reminding me of Hazlet (how we pronounced it), Angel Delight, 1970's mandarin flans, Butterscotch sweets, consommé, and salt & vinegar French Fries.
Less thanks for the awful memories of boiled cow's tongue 😫

I can add Tip Top drinks in small cartons, orange and strawberry flavours I think?

Boiled canned baby potatoes- waxy, salty, weird!

Trays of sugared fruit jelly sweets, can't recall the brand, but in the late 70's.

"Salads" for tea that were half an egg, half a serrated tomato, 1 lettuce leaf, a slice or two of ham, plus lots of white bread and marg, and cups of sweet brown tea.

Prawn cocktail in restaurants.

Tipsy cake- weird flavour but it definitely wasn't rum!

HelebethH · 18/05/2022 23:45

Spangles
Royal Scot biscuits
Butterscotch Instant Whip
Gypsy tart
Lemon sherbert crytals ( mixed with water to make a drink but as kids we used to just dip our fingers in the bag)
Milo malted milk drink

Aghh · 18/05/2022 23:46

A stable lunch back in my day, and a staple for every thread of this kind - TOAST TOPPERS.

Hardly see them nowadays because they look/taste like bland baby sick (shudder).

Keladrythesaviour · 18/05/2022 23:47

Just read the thread and realised I'm late to the potato party!

HelebethH · 18/05/2022 23:47

Oh forgot to add Rosehip syrup from the baby clinic( tooth rot in a bottle)

growandhope · 18/05/2022 23:47

vesta beef or chicken curry; Probably tasted like crap but fond memories, make everything with water from dried powder packets, I suppose it was overtaken by microwave meals.

That cadburys bar with like a crackly spiral shell - secret (I googled) - very sweet but it was nice.

and 'set yoghurts' whatever happened them. Think they were yoplait. All flavours - vanilla, raspberry, strawberry, lemon etc. they obviously had gelatin in them but no lumps. There is nothing like them on the market anymore. I wonder why. Greek yoghurt is the nearest but way too heavy.

Aghh · 18/05/2022 23:47

@FabulousKilljoys Piglets ? YES INDEEDY !

Southlandssue · 18/05/2022 23:48

@L0stinCyberspace i think we might have lived in the same house as children

Italiangreyhound · 18/05/2022 23:48

I love stuffed marrow, and I still eat fish in a bag!

AnElegantChaos · 18/05/2022 23:49

Kwenchy Cups. The juice tasted of the plastic from the cup but delicious!

Horizons83 · 18/05/2022 23:51

Ice Magic was indeed amazing. I’ve taken to making my own recently, which has the added benefit of allowing you to use high quality chocolate. No funky bottles though 😞

TheNoteIsEternal · 18/05/2022 23:52

Anybody remember the sweets that looked like small cigarettes? I think there were chocolate ones too.
