Or no one ever talks about them anymore.

I will offer chocolate covered cornflakes, which used to be in high street baker's windows every eater with confectionary eggs atop. A staple home economics recipe, I recall running home from school with a large tin, convinced that I was going to blow everyone's mind with my culinary genius.

And Spam. Like 'corned beef', but the pork version, also in a tin. That curious shape, reminded me of feeding the cat. My DH watches a lot of wild camping/van man stuff in Japan on youtube and it seems to be having a resurgence..

Those Lyon's individual fruit pies in square boxes from the 60s, they were similar to Mr Kipling pies but bigger and better, I always used to take them on school trips and we had them on holiday.

Pink Junket. I loved it.

Bloodybridget · 18/05/2022 22:31

Butterscotch. Made by Callard & Bowser, it came in a white oblong cardboard packet wrapped in film, with silver writing, and inside, each piece like a little double pillow, wrapped in silver foil. It was delicious. I think those Werthers things are meant to have a similar texture and flavour [sniffs and flounces off]

Mr Kipling fruit sundaes, strawberry was the 👌

I’d forgotten about marrows. Always a particularly shit dinner night when my mum decided to boil the fuck out of one of those.

speaking of which, nobody ever peels big potatoes, cuts them into three or four pieces and boils them any more. It’s all boiled new potatoes now and has been for at least 30 years (I am not complaining - I love boiled new potatoes and hated those horrible, flavourless, floury lumps of boiled potato than my mum used to serve up (with cod in parsley sauce and reheated frozen runner beans usually. Blehhh).

Waitrose do gala pie.

Heinz tinned puddings that you boiled in a pan of water. They were lush!

Ohhh my yes the golden syrup one was so good.

Livingmagicallyagain · 18/05/2022 22:33

Jap Cakes! They were in every bakery! Now nowhere!

User7493268965 · 18/05/2022 22:33

I feel I could eat a Lyons apricot fruit pie now

SAB10 · 18/05/2022 22:33

Corned beef hash with baked beans, Fray Bentos, various lentil dishes, banana sandwiches with sugar. Bisto as a hot drink 'treat'. That ham in the shape of a teddy bear. fried bread with a hole cut in it for the egg yolk. My mother was no Delia Smith but I loved all of the above!

You've just brought back vivid memories. I fucking hated boiled potatoes like this!

SAB10 · 18/05/2022 22:35

Oh and school dinner puddings! Chocolate pudding with mint custard was my favourite Grin

Onesmallstepforaman · 18/05/2022 22:35

My dad made brawny from a pigs head brought home from the farm. The pink dyed nonsense was only in shops. Known as pigs head cheese in parts of Yorkshire

emmeline7725 · 18/05/2022 22:35

What has happened to red delicious apples? You know, those really crisp, shiny ones. The flesh was sweet but sometimes the peel could be quite bitter. They were the best apples ever and I can't find them anywhere now. Surely they haven't stopped making them!

Hellocatshome · 18/05/2022 22:36

Oh yes we were often subjected to the horror of a soggy tastless marrow stuffed with cooked to death beef mince and kidney beans and a pinch of curry powder for a touch of the exotic.

Gingernaut · 18/05/2022 22:37

Apeel - powdered drink that made a sort of orange squash

Pugfostermum · 18/05/2022 22:39

My local farm shop does excellent chocolate cornflake cakes with the eggs on. 2 in a pack, but they’re very generously sized and well covered in chocolate. Lovely!!

User7493268965 · 18/05/2022 22:39

King Cones that they used to sell in cinemas, similar to Cornetto but bigger and creamier

Amybelle88 · 18/05/2022 22:41

Astros!

mocktail · 18/05/2022 22:41

Instant Whip. Blancmange. Trifle at birthday parties (as opposed to sherry trifle at Xmas).

Ah this is making me hungry!

Pugfostermum · 18/05/2022 22:41

Toast toppers.
They came in a tiny tin with a ring pull top. They were gelatinous things in flavours such as cheese and ham or mushroom. You spread them on toast, then grilled them for a few minutes to warm through.

thenightsky · 18/05/2022 22:41

oMG. I'd forgotten those. Weren't the individual sweets wrapped in silver paper too. Sometimes if you bit down on one in exactly the right place, it would split into slivers like slate.

Gliblet · 18/05/2022 22:18

Supermousse - I have very (probably unreasonably) fond memories of those weird little tubs of frozen foam/mousse/sponge Grin

Oh, and Birds instant hot lemon crunch pudding. It probably tasted like disinfectant, most artificial lemon flavour things do, but to my childhood taste buds it was absolutely divine.

OMG you are the only other human being I've come across in circa 25 years who remembers lemon crunch! Someone somewhere must know what it was made of?

MrOllivander · 18/05/2022 22:42

I was talking to my dad about this tonight - things you don't see on pub menus any more! Like grapefruit as a starter, melon balls, orange juice (as a starter), sorbet seems to have gone out of fashion too, chicken in a basket

GuyFawkesDay · 18/05/2022 22:43

Mine are ALL junk food. My 1980s was defined by it

Potato puff crisps
Proper rice pudding, not ambrosia.
Funny feet ice lollies
