Or no one ever talks about them anymore.

I will offer chocolate covered cornflakes, which used to be in high street baker's windows every eater with confectionary eggs atop. A staple home economics recipe, I recall running home from school with a large tin, convinced that I was going to blow everyone's mind with my culinary genius.

And Spam. Like 'corned beef', but the pork version, also in a tin. That curious shape, reminded me of feeding the cat. My DH watches a lot of wild camping/van man stuff in Japan on youtube and it seems to be having a resurgence..

OMG yes to those flat cornflake cakes cut into slices!

Also, Lyons(?) cupcakes in a pack of six. Chocolate, orange and lemon. You could peel the icing off as a whole disc and eat it first.

camelfinger · 18/05/2022 23:16

Boring sandwiches or filled rolls - you can probably get them but you don’t seem to see plain egg rolls, or cheese or ham, without something fancy added.
I had totally forgotten about the horrible boiled up potatoes.
I remember the meat counter having loads of different types of bacon. Some were as long as your arm.
Also lots of different types of ham and sliced meats on the counter.
And boring biscuits. Like the Nice ones or the ones with sports on.
Fairy cakes (not cupcakes). With water icing and orange and lemon slices on.
School dinners, which were generally horrible, did have lots of really nice puddings. Often heavy sponges with custard.
A plate of salad made up of round lettuce, sliced tomato, a bit of grated carrot, some sliced egg and a piece of ham with a bit of salad cream.
Iced buns. Used to be a treat but seem really boring these days.
Bottles or jugs of orange squash. I remember always being offered squash as a child at peoples’ houses and was pretty old the first time I remember having plain water.

Mr Men yoghurts - think there was a chocolate and a hazelnut flavour.

Ice Magic was like crack, I used to drink it straight from the bottle Blush

@emmeline7725 I hunted high and low for those red apples for several years, finally found an independent fruit and veg store recently that sells them. Asked the shopkeeper why they are so hard to find and she said they're not popular anymore because they can be quite bitter. I love them - the peel is so shiny!

Those Heinz steamed puddings were amazing, especially the chocolate one.

lecreusetpeppermill · 18/05/2022 23:19

I too remember snowballs, my dad used to have one with a cup of tea in the late 80's.

Findus crispy pancakes were a low moment Grin

I’m eating chocolate cornflake clusters right now, little bags for £1 from the coop.

Jackiebrambles · 18/05/2022 23:20

TheSpottedZebra · 18/05/2022 22:20

Ooh those choc fudge cakes from the freezer where you microwaved it and it got slightly melty.

Oh god I loved those

00100001 · 18/05/2022 23:20

Loads of these things still exist

Spam
Chocolate lick (in sweet shops)
Luncheon meat in a tin
<a class="break-all" href="https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=groceries.asda.com/product/corned-beef-tongue/the-meat-deli-co-haslet/910003262290&ved=2ahUKEwii85ayier3AhXPNcAKHfCFAgYQFnoECAgQAQ&usg=AOvVaw2dB0H-41yDn3uWYz-2_HRX" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Haslet
Boil in the bag fish
Tinned ratatouille
Sliced tongue
Red delicious apples

To name a few!

Graphista · 18/05/2022 23:20

Don't bother with the angel delight op I tried it a few years back on the back of a thread like this and it DOES NOT taste like it used to! Mainly as there's sod all sugar or flavour in it now

@Latenightreader you can still get tinned ratatouille I have it regularly with baked potato

For the scots- creamola foam the real thing not the current poor imitation! - I see I'm far from the only one grieving that loss!

@MrOllivander my dd and I would love to see sorbet being much easier to find in uk, in Southern Europe it is still very popular we had it there where dd had it for the first time and we have tried in vain to find a reliable source in uk that doesn't mean buying in bulk/spending a fortune!

Pre vegetarianism I used to love tongue, steak and kidney pudding, faggots in gravy, cockles and muscles...

Crispynoodle · 18/05/2022 23:21

I've lollies with jelly in the middle, covered in strawberry ice cream then a thin layer of chocolate my favourite 50 years ago!

lecreusetpeppermill · 18/05/2022 23:21

And back before knowledge and awareness made me shot scared of processed food, long before the internet destroyed my innocence, I used to LOVE creamy peppercorn kievs from Morrisons. No other pre-made kiev has ever compared since,

Toast toppers

Pizza toast (basically just another type of toast topper)

Ans what @camelfinger says - a nice plain roll with grated cheese in, or a tomato sandwich. Everything is such a complex mash-up now.

00100001 · 18/05/2022 23:22

Jesus Christ... Mumsnet links broke...

But honestly they exist and work

AnElegantChaos · 18/05/2022 23:22

@Cog1972 Used to drink the orange chocolate one straight out the bottle.

hashbrownsandwich · 18/05/2022 22:42

OMG you are the only other human being I've come across in circa 25 years who remembers lemon crunch! Someone somewhere must know what it was made of?

I knew they existed! There's another hot-pudding-unicorn further down the thread Grin I have a feeling they were probably made entirely out of artificial flavours and stabilisers and we'd be horrified if we read the packaging as adults...

Vodkaandgingerale · 18/05/2022 23:23

Salt and vinegar French fries 😪

Vodkaandgingerale · 18/05/2022 23:23

Salt and vinegar French fries 😪

They sell them at Tesco

Cleanbedlinen12 · 18/05/2022 23:26

Gosh, pease pudding from a supermarket! I’m old enough to remember buying it from the butchers, which had sawdust on the floor. You could make patterns in it while you were in the queue with your mum.

Cog1972 · 18/05/2022 23:26

Another one - Pyramints. A pyramid made out of thin squares of dark chocolate with a sort of sweet mint syrup inside. They were amazing.

Cog1972 · 18/05/2022 23:27

And Piglets - bacon crisps in the shape of little hollow pigs.

ssd · 18/05/2022 23:28

Neverendingdust · 18/05/2022 22:58

Steak Canadian sandwiches
Rag puddings
Beef puffs
Fruitopia drinks
Twist N squeeze drinks

SunnyD

SunnyD 🙈

Never seen an orange in its life

MrOllivander · 18/05/2022 23:28

@Graphista most of the supermarkets have it, I like the M&S mango one best
Remeo brand is more expensive but they do sorbet ice lollies too, Hackney gelato is another good one (don't eat their peanut butter ice cream, it's addictive!)

Notsomellownow · 18/05/2022 23:30

Gliblet · 18/05/2022 22:18

Supermousse - I have very (probably unreasonably) fond memories of those weird little tubs of frozen foam/mousse/sponge Grin

Oh, and Birds instant hot lemon crunch pudding. It probably tasted like disinfectant, most artificial lemon flavour things do, but to my childhood taste buds it was absolutely divine.

Wow I had completely forgotten about lemon crunch pudding! It was delicious!! 😋
Also Findus crispy pancakes with the mince and cheese filling
Snowballs (the drink) in teeny bottles at Christmas
Dream topping

SweatyChamoisPad · 18/05/2022 23:31

Festival gateaux. God I love that stuff. I used to get it from Morrisons but I think they’ve discontinued it. I am devastated.
