Or no one ever talks about them anymore.

I will offer chocolate covered cornflakes, which used to be in high street baker's windows every eater with confectionary eggs atop. A staple home economics recipe, I recall running home from school with a large tin, convinced that I was going to blow everyone's mind with my culinary genius.

And Spam. Like 'corned beef', but the pork version, also in a tin. That curious shape, reminded me of feeding the cat. My DH watches a lot of wild camping/van man stuff in Japan on youtube and it seems to be having a resurgence..

Ooh Cafe Noir, thanks for the reminder. Loved those.

Lakeland sell rosehip syrup. And I don't know if they still do, but M&S used to do tubs of chocolate cornflake bites.

My go to diet meal was boil in the bag birds eye minced beef in gravy poured over mixed veg. Soooo tasty! Then BSE happened and it disappeared overnight. I don't want it back, it can stay in the past Envy

@Onesmallstepforaman, Pig’s head brawn is called ‘head cheese’ in France, too. (Fromage de tete). A dd is partial to it - I usually bring back a jar for her. All the supermarkets have it.

Blackcountryexile · 22/05/2022 21:56

When I was a child in the 1960's and 70's we regularly had tinned roe for tea. It was like eating rubber and was tasteless. DM was no cook! I've never met anyone else who remembers it. Hopefully it disappeared from shops years ago.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 22/05/2022 22:16

My treat for myself when a student and marginally less skint than usual, was a Vesta Paella.

Apparently they’re still available but I never see them anywhere.

Frozen beef Dale steaks by Findus cooked on the eye level grill. Thin frying steaks in a box separated by sheets of paper ...food of the gods in the 80's bloody loved them x

Mattessons Salmon Pate/Spread! Tasted amazing and I still miss it.

newnamethanks · 23/05/2022 08:59

Those Findus 'steaks'? My lodger used to cook them 'secretly' when I was out. The smell was indescribable. 😷Dead Dog burgers again Philip? Er, yes, how do you know?

Those things got me through my first year at uni when I still couldn't cook properly. 😄

youdothemaths · 23/05/2022 11:18

^ And may I just add, I miss eye level grills! I have back pain issues and wish I had one now!

Me too. Used to have them on a Friday with oven chips. Yum Yum.

Fresh cod roe cooked in butter, served on toast. My mum used to make it for tea. Yum yum.

I miss, 'snack pot' instant rice meal. It was delicious, just pour on boiling water and mix it. Really tasty curry. Why is it all about pot noodles these days ?

I used to eat it at lunch time whilst watching t.v. shows such as, 'The Cedar Tree' or 'Crown Court'

Blamanche

I made some at Christmas to go in my trifle!

Onlyhuman123 · 23/05/2022 14:09

I cannot find blancmange anywhere! It's my DF (fathers) favourite pud but I can't find it anywhere. I used to love it as a kid.

Also 'ground rice'...loved that stuff; I've not looked for it so don't know if it's still available...

CornishGem1975 · 23/05/2022 14:14

It took some finding @Onlyhuman123 but you can get the blancmange sachets in Morrisons - the only place I've found them. Next to the jelly etc. Often out of stock but I got it eventually. Something like 40p a packet!

Liqueur chocolates. I remember tucking into a box as a kid and being rather disappointed at the bitter tasting liquid in the middle, but I pushed on through for the actual chocolate. I must have put a fair amount away for a child as I finished the whole box!

I bought three (small) boxes of liquor chocolates in the post Christmas sale at Sainsburys! I still have almost two boxes, they aren’t as nice as they were when I sneaked them aged about ten…
