Or no one ever talks about them anymore.

I will offer chocolate covered cornflakes, which used to be in high street baker's windows every eater with confectionary eggs atop. A staple home economics recipe, I recall running home from school with a large tin, convinced that I was going to blow everyone's mind with my culinary genius.

And Spam. Like 'corned beef', but the pork version, also in a tin. That curious shape, reminded me of feeding the cat. My DH watches a lot of wild camping/van man stuff in Japan on youtube and it seems to be having a resurgence..

Angel delight is regularly in our menu still!

Ice magic was the best!

Pizzarollers - tennis ball shaped pizza which microwaved in about a minute but would stay like molten lava for 15 minutes after!

Those mousse that were frozen and were in a bag of 6, raspberry ripple!

Creamola foam, we always had a rusty tin of this in the cupboard.

This is more recent but Mignon Morceaux by Philius Fogg or even better the Waitrose own brand version called garlic croutons. They were DELICIOUS crispy, oily, pungent bread snacks and I still miss them.

I’d forgotten about marrows. Always a particularly shit dinner night when my mum decided to boil the fuck out of one of those.

speaking of which, nobody ever peels big potatoes, cuts them into three or four pieces and boils them any more. It’s all boiled new potatoes now and has been for at least 30 years (I am not complaining - I love boiled new potatoes and hated those horrible, flavourless, floury lumps of boiled potato than my mum used to serve up (with cod in parsley sauce and reheated frozen runner beans usually. Blehhh).

I'm the opposite! I miss the lovely sliced old boiled potatoes. Boiled new potatoes are meh. I refuse to have a roast about the house in case they serve the new potato abominations!

I miss... Onken strawberry mousse. It was half my daily weight watchers points but so worth it. I could just fill up on old potatoes.

Hoolihan · 18/05/2022 22:52

Boiled floury potatoes just taste of hot water.

Apeel - powdered drink that made a sort of orange squash

We were only allowed that in our packed lunches at middle school🙂

Hohofortherobbers · 18/05/2022 22:55

Consommé in restaurants? Used to love this and would drink hot oxo as a substitute as an 80s child

lovelychops · 18/05/2022 22:55

I loved those frozen mousses in pack! My favorite were the mint ones. My nan used to get them for us

Supermousse - I have very (probably unreasonably) fond memories of those weird little tubs of frozen foam/mousse/sponge Grin

Oh, and Birds instant hot lemon crunch pudding. It probably tasted like disinfectant, most artificial lemon flavour things do, but to my childhood taste buds it was absolutely divine.

I loved the Hot Apple Crunch! No one else ever remembers them.

Brandy Snaps - staple at Christmas. Ne’er to be seen or found these days.

Haslet - Dry, like slices of an over flamed kebab left out in the sun. Horse meat mainly, but the taste was irrelevant. The novelty was in the table discussion on how to pronounce it - Has-let or Haze-Let.

Marrow - stuffed with meat, maybe cheese and brought to the table. Just don’t see it anymore other than under Keith’s arm on way back from allotment. Keith doesn’t like it either.

You can still get them! Picked up some brandy snaps in Aldi around Christmas time. Delicious. And very quickly scoffed.

Oneforallforone · 18/05/2022 22:58

Yes to Mignon Morceaux and the waitrose ones! My tongue would tingle like mad but it was so worth it.

I was actually lamenting the lack of cornflake cakes in bakeries the other day. Its all heavy iced buns now!

M&S used to do circular, flat cornflake cakes and they were sort of formed into about six segments so that you could break a piece off. They did really nice peach frozen yoghurt about thirty years ago that I ate loads of because I thought it was healthy.

FabulousKilljoys · 18/05/2022 22:23

Those puddings where you poured hot water on the mix, baked it and it made sponge at the top and sauce underneath. There was a lemon one and a chocolate one.

Supermousse from the freezer cabinet and we always ate them before they defrosted.

Goblin puddings. We had them with chips and peas every week when I was a kid.

Saucy sponge! I used to love that.

I had trouble finding pease pudding recently. I had a baked gammon and suddenly had a craving for it. Had to visit 3 supermarkets before I found it.

RusticCharminglyCrumbled · 18/05/2022 23:02

@Izzy24 I've got some in my cupboard. Sainsbury's is your friend

Lalaland44 · 18/05/2022 23:06

Sliced tongue 👅
As a treat (for himself mainly) my dad used to buy a cows tongue from the butchers at Christmas. Boil it. Peel off the skin and taste buds and slice it up!! It actually tastes ok but omg 😱 horrific to watch it boiling on the stove!! 🫢

HimalayanSnowcock · 18/05/2022 23:06

Not so long ago but salsa with mesquite kettle chips were the best, I wish they would bring them back.

Talipesmum · 18/05/2022 23:08

Yes to supermousse (mint and choc, swirled, frozen) and mignon morceaux.

And ice magic - you can still get stuff a bit like it (crackin?) but (1) it’s def not as good and (2) you can’t get choc mint flavour. It’s all “caramel” and “strawberry” etc.

I hadn’t noticed choc cornflake crispy cakes aren’t around much - we make them at birthdays and Easter all the time!

I miss those Knorr Touch of Taste bottles of stock concentrate. They disappeared a few years ago from the shelves and i really liked them - you’d just add a bit of what you needed without having to use a whole stock pot or cube etc.

godmum56 · 18/05/2022 23:09

marks have cornflake nests at easter. Spam is still around. My mum used to love a stuffed marrow, I liked the stuffing but not the marrow

Marrow should never be boiled. Peel, remove seedy core and finely chop the flesh. Throw into a pan sizzling with garlic butter. Waite a few minutes then add a teaspoon of cumin seeds and half a teaspoon of coriander. Stir, cook in a gentle heat until marrow is cooked and glossy. Throw in a handful of grated cheese. Stir and serve.

Laurajane1987 · 18/05/2022 23:10

Proper orginal cremola foam. We used to sneak in the kitchen and eat the power out of the little tin and run about like zombies foaming at the mouth 🤣 and high as kites because it was just sugar haha. I saw some in an American style 'candy' shop but it really wasn't the same

Dizza25 · 18/05/2022 23:16

Crispy pancakes!
