Would you be happy to receive this as a gift?

A family portrait illustration similar to the one pictured?

Considering them for Christmas presents (I know I'm early!) but DH thinks people would rather have a realistic portrait or canvas photo.

I'd absolutely love it.

Triffid1 · 18/05/2022 15:28

Completely and totally depends on the family. My sister, brother and father would rather chew broken glass than have something like this. I'd quite like it.

DH's sister would like it. His mother would NOT.

Different styles are also more likely to go down well/not well. So someone who hates this might like a version done as a line drawing for example.

Ponderingwindow · 18/05/2022 15:28

I would love receiving something like that, particularly if it were made by the person giving the gift.

toastofthetown · 18/05/2022 15:29

It’s not my cup of tea.

thecatsthecats · 18/05/2022 15:38

I think it's nice, but I wouldn't like to receive it.

I like to choose the personal things for my home, because they're personal.

They sound a bit... highly strung?

Agree with this. But I wouldn't hang photos or canvas prints either.

Who? My family because they'd hate something like this? My sister lives in a super modern, super large house with carefully curated family portraits and art work. She would see this as twee. Which is fine, her taste is not my taste and there is no reason why she should like the same things I do. My dad once complained because he just wanted a straight to camera shot of my children and nothing that was cute or arty! That's just them. Grin. As a result there are a number of items that belonged to my mother that have come to me because her taste and mine are more aligned (She'd have loved the art work in the OP).

viques · 18/05/2022 15:45

No, I would be a bit sad that you had misread me, and that you had spent time and money on something that you like rather than something I would like.

growandhope · 18/05/2022 15:45

damn pictures are still to small to see, when are they going to fix this on this site? From what I can see, it looks nice but sometimes people can get offended if they don't like themselves in hand drawn portraits.

Shoxfordian · 18/05/2022 15:46

No I wouldn’t want this as a present - who were you buying it for?

Shodan · 18/05/2022 15:47

I wouldn't like it at all, sorry.

Far too cutesy for my tastes.

ProudThrilledHappy · 18/05/2022 15:48

to be honest OP I would probably consider this a bit of a waste of your money this as it is not my taste and it would end up in a drawer. Probably only do it for people with similar taste to you. I’d rather get a generic bottle of wine than something I felt obligated to get out on display every time someone visited

RibNSaucyArseCrack · 18/05/2022 15:48

No Thankyou!

Needmorelego · 18/05/2022 15:48

I wouldn't personally. I think it's a bit cheesy. I wouldn't really have anywhere to display it.
Sorry but I would feel it's a bit of a waste of the gift givers money when there are loads of things I would actually love to be given as gifts that I can't really afford to buy myself.
Sounds selfish and maybe it is but I really would find this a pointless gift.

KylieCharlene · 18/05/2022 15:49

I love it.

yesthatisdrizzle · 18/05/2022 15:49

I like it, but it's probably not something I'd want to receive myself.

WarrickDavisAsPlates · 18/05/2022 15:50

I might be stupid but are you making the pictures or buying them?

I wouldn't want to receive it personally, it's really not my style at all. But if I knew the person giving it to me had made it themselves I'd be more inclined to display it as an appreciation of their efforts even though I don't like it.

LoudingVoice · 18/05/2022 15:52

No, it’s not my taste and I wouldn’t put it up anywhere, it’d gather dust and I’d feel guilty that you’d spent money on it.

I’d only buy this for someone I know would like it, my MIL would love this kind of thing but I don’t think most people I know would.

EmmaC78 · 18/05/2022 15:52

I wouldn't like it either. I would probably feel obliged to put it up for a while and then it would end up at the back of a cupboard.

KStockHERO · 18/05/2022 15:53

I would hate it. I like to choose my own home decorations, paintings, artwork etc.

I don't like modern portraits, paintings, photographs up in my home. But if I did have some up they'd be of me and DP, not random other families.

WarrickDavisAsPlates · 18/05/2022 15:53

Just to add, I also wouldn't want a canvas or realistic portrait. I think as art is so personal I would be wary of giving it as a gift.
