What makes you feel old?

Things that have made me feel old recently (I'm 39)

1 - getting the new iPhone and realising it looks the same and is just as shit as the one I got 7 years ago (as the ones from a year a two ago seem better, I've obviously missed something - something else to make me feel old!)

2 - how crap music videos are nowadays Where is the narrative? Or concept? It's all just people dancing in a desert. I want a tiny film. Give me something like the video to Murder on the Dancefoor by Sophie Ellis Bextor or Hey Ya by OutKast any day.

What has made you feel old recently? Please tell me I'm not alone and that life, as I suspected, has indeed gone to the dogs.

@RosesAndHellebores and ringing the operator and asking to be put through to Mrs xyz, only to be told there’s no point as she’s in another call! We had Gorsley 409 and I was always told off for saying it too quickly.

Singleandproud · 08/05/2022 23:34

I was telling the teens in my form how you used to ring a phone number to get the time (Tim - the speaking clock) . They thought I was lying "Nah, Miss, you'd just look at your phone." The idea of not having a mobile phone on you, a computer that only went on if you were actually using it etc was beyond them.

My 13 year old daughter

MyCatIsAJerk · 09/05/2022 00:03

My reflection.

Thanks for the reminder, @CoryWolfHeart.

Wait until your 60s.

NannyGythaOgg · 09/05/2022 01:16

First time I felt 'OLD' was when I was babysitting for the kids next door and, when we were watching TOTP they asked me 'Who is Elvis Presley?' This was 1069 and I was 13.

I'm now 67 and I still haven't got over it.

Antarcticant · 09/05/2022 06:51

This was 1069 and I was 13

To be fair, nearly 1000 is old. Grin

Sunnysideup999 · 09/05/2022 07:01

My son asking ‘we’re you alive in the older days when they didn’t have the internet?’

CoverYourselfInChocolateGlory · 09/05/2022 07:33

God, I'm getting this more and more (mid-40s):

  • chin hairs
  • aches and pains
  • the new professional headshots I had done recently for work - that's not what I look like, surely?
  • I've realised that I now only listen to old music because I'm too busy to discover new music, so I've become one of those older people who only listens to the music from their youth (and older)
  • I enjoy peace and quiet
  • the effect alcohol has on me - I can only have a couple of glasses now - I used to be a party animal!
  • Fashion - I just don't understand or can't possibly wear a lot of modern fashion - it's so ugly or it makes me looks even older, so I'm sticking with what I know!
  • eye bags that I can't seem to get rid of
  • realising that I have not been chatted up by anyone in over ten years

So many. I don't mind being older exactly, I don't want to go back to my youth, but feeling slower and more achey and tired all the time sucks!

sqirrelfriends · 09/05/2022 07:42

One of the interns at work asked for help to send a letter.

Listening to a classic rock station and hearing songs from my childhood.

UnreasonabIe · 09/05/2022 08:04

About 10 years ago I realised I was older than Princess Diana when she died. She seemed like a proper grownup then and I wondered how I'd possibly missed me being a grownup 🤷🏼‍♀️

mumonthehill · 09/05/2022 08:08

When you go to the doctors or for an X-ray and they no longer ask if you might be pregnant.

UnreasonabIe · 09/05/2022 08:09

Also Re Princess Diana, (I was not someone especially interested in her btw) I recently tried to explain to a young person how it was when she shook the hands of AIDS sufferers and immediately changed how they were treated, how scared everyone was before that.
Also how weird it was the day she died. I went to the shop and it was full of people yet it was silent.....

Charlavail · 09/05/2022 20:23

Today when I packed the baby's moses basket away. Having babies seemed so grown up and in a blink I'm past the age of having babies!

When my class were learning about the beatles and I said there were as famous as one direction and then realised they were too young to know who one direction are.

Neverreturntoathread · 10/05/2022 00:00

Achy bones.

Crap music.

Not having heard of the ‘famous’ people in the news.

Disneydatknee88 · 10/05/2022 00:17

..I bent down to get the blender out of the cupboard the other day and my knees made a horrible clicking sound. I had to grab at things to help me back up...I'm only 33. My new job doesn't help tbh, I work for an apprenticeship company and most of our applicants were born just as I was starting secondary school haha

I remember old dial up telephones with letters printed next to the numbers. My grandma always used to answer the phone "Tonbridge 7578" and booking an international call with the operator.

My MIL still says the village name and number when you call her nowadays.

mackthepony · 10/05/2022 01:34

I found out the other day that the Karate Kid actor Ralph Macchio is now...60!! 😳 That blew my mind!

^

Google Christopher from the Sopranos if you dare... I think he's around 60 now too

Yes I remember everybody feeling gutted. Like a huge black cloud over the country.

JenniferPlantain · 10/05/2022 05:48

Weird injuries for no bloody reason! The other day I sat cross legged on the floor for a few hours and I woke up the next day with a bad hip that lasted a week. A few weeks ago I woke up with a fucked knee from presumably sleeping in a funny position! Had a knee support on and was limping for two days!

I mean, WTAF?? I go to the gym but never get injured there! I’m not overweight. I’m healthy. Happy with everything else. But since 40 random physical injuries drive me nuts! 😂

Iamnotokifyouarenotok · 10/05/2022 06:06

My hips and weak bladder!!

krakenandcoke · 10/05/2022 06:46

Teaching an A Level module which ends in 2004. I was the same age in 2004 as the students I now teach and so I am actually a primary source to them. More worryingly, one of them even asked me if I'd had a mobile or used the Internet. In my head life wasn't much different then, but it really was.

Watching this year's Superbowl half time show and being shocked at how old everyone looked. Then realising it was aimed at my demographic and older.

I haven't listened to a current song since about 2012 but in my head any songs from that time are still modern.

That one random chin hair that comes back every 3 weeks.

DP is a little bit younger than me, which also never fails to make me feel old.

Therewere5inthebed · 10/05/2022 09:01

One of the children at the school where I work calling me Gran accidentally, I was outraged, laughing at the ridiculousness of it until I realised that I was more than old enough to be his gran

PinkyPie41 · 10/05/2022 09:11

Dd thinks I'm ancient because ipads weren't invented when I was her age, I'm 32!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 10/05/2022 09:30

Looking in the mirror with my glasses on.
Having a dd of 45 doesn’t help, either.

BertieBotts · 10/05/2022 09:39

The whole concept of TikTok, and, yes, influencers. When I was younger the internet was for geeks, now it has become infested with popular people Confused

I am glad to hear that I type like a young person Grin

Phones/apps being the default for online stuff makes me depressed.
