What makes you feel old?

Things that have made me feel old recently (I'm 39)

1 - getting the new iPhone and realising it looks the same and is just as shit as the one I got 7 years ago (as the ones from a year a two ago seem better, I've obviously missed something - something else to make me feel old!)

2 - how crap music videos are nowadays Where is the narrative? Or concept? It's all just people dancing in a desert. I want a tiny film. Give me something like the video to Murder on the Dancefoor by Sophie Ellis Bextor or Hey Ya by OutKast any day.

What has made you feel old recently? Please tell me I'm not alone and that life, as I suspected, has indeed gone to the dogs.

When I fall asleep on sofa after sitting down to eat my lunch about 3 times a week.

Smallorangecat · 07/05/2022 22:06

When I realised I was old enough to be the mother of some of my colleagues.
When I said “it’s 20 years since I started university,” and most of them hadn’t started primary school 20 years ago.
When patients I looked after as tiny babies are now teenagers.
That I am old enough to have a DC starting secondary school in September.

Many years ago (er, about 50...) my father got a job abroad and we travelled out by sea.

The other day I looked up a picture of the ship we sailed on. It looked like the sort of thing you see in films set in the 50s and 60s. I felt about 90.

And mourning the recent loss of the last place in a ten mile radius where you could buy sweets weighed out of the jar.

my best friend from School - her 18 year old GRANDSON has joined the army.
it barely seems 5 minutes since we were pretending Sabrina and Jill from Charlie’s Angels.

The thought that the time gap between WW2 and my birth is equivalent to the time gap between the 1990s and now. The 1990s feel like a couple of years ago to me.

I realised something similar when my 15 year old daughter played Rio to me, ( she’s just discovered it) and I calculated it’s age and then that time again back from when I was 15🙈🙈🙈🙈🙈

unknownorigins · 07/05/2022 22:20

When the 1970s seem as if they were 30 years ago, then you realise 30 years ago was 1992Shock
I was born in 1974 and definitely feel my age.

Louise0701 · 07/05/2022 22:26

@TheLightSideOfTheMoon hahahah 😂😂 sorry but that made me LOL!

My DD (9) asked me the other day what it was like being a child in the 90s and did we have a car 😐 this stemmed from a conversation about what age she is allowed a phone. I told her I got my first mobile around 15/16 as nobody really had them then. She couldn’t believe mobiles haven’t always been a “thing” and asked when I got my first iPad. She was horrified at that too and proceeded to ask if we had electricity and baths as “in the olden days they didn’t have proper baths” …..
I am early 30s…..

I found out the other day that the Karate Kid actor Ralph Macchio is now...60!! 😳 That blew my mind!

No way!!!!

Louise0701 · 07/05/2022 22:31

@InFiveMins I’m sorry, what?!? Will Young did not win pop idol 20 years ago! It was definitely about 8 years ago max!!! 😐 this has made me feel old!

WonderingWanda · 07/05/2022 22:53

Realising I am teaching the secondary age children of ex students that I taught when I first behan teaching. When teenagers tell me I am older than their parents. Any time I catch a glimpse of myself in a mirror. When I spent time with my toddler dn recently....definitely to old to go back to that stage again. When I go clothes shopping, I feel like so many clothes lool too young for me these days.

SummersBreeze · 07/05/2022 23:00

Watching old episodes of home and away and wondering where the years went and I feel sick thinking about it. I mean the late 90s only seemed like yesterday.
Same age as you op

Pinklimey · 08/05/2022 00:47

Years ago I decided I was old because I used proper words on an RPG while chatting to other players. I have since had a child so now I feel ancient.

Hawkins001 · 08/05/2022 00:49

Back in the day, Napster, and 56k dial up, these days, Wi-Fi and tablets

FunnysInLaJardin · 08/05/2022 00:57

Having danced the night away to 80's two tone, I have decided that I will never feel old. That is just nonsense.

Yes, I am 51, greying and on HRT, but fuck it, why feel old. What is to gain from it.

I am the new young Grin

I watched TOTP2 last night and EMF were on. I googled the lead singer - he's now a teacher! So unbelievable..

I see what you did there, I Believe …

Singleandproud · 08/05/2022 01:06

I watched Austin Powers 2 with Dd, haven't seen it in atleast 15 years, remembered it word for word and DD looked at me and just said "Well they wouldn't make that today!"

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 08/05/2022 01:09

When payroll/HR asked what my wishes were regarding my cats, in the event of an accident or death at work.

Vijia · 08/05/2022 02:08

I don't feel old, I have gone back to uni and I am fitter than ever. My diet is really heathy. I do a sport with my DH and DC. I am in my 60s. The secret to not feeling old is taking care of yourself, having a positive outlook and a sense of humour.

ShirleyJackson · 08/05/2022 03:09

When I mentioned to my hairdresser that Kylie Minogue had changed since she was in Neighbours - and her jaw dropped. She had no idea Kylie had ever been in Neighbours.

When I realised I’m now old enough to be some of my students’ grandma. Seems like five minutes since I was the trendy young teacher who got mistaken for a student on results day. Wouldn’t happen now…

Speaking of students, I’ve had a couple recently who’ve never heard of The Beatles. Now that makes me feel nearly dead, let alone old.

jurgenkloppmas · 08/05/2022 04:01

I'm comparatively "not old" (I'm 27!) but me and my sadly departed DH used to complain all the time about how Snapchat streaks and Tiktok made us feel 22,000 years of age

iloveeverykindofcat · 08/05/2022 07:30

@jurgenkloppmas I'm getting to grips with TikTok right now, for research purposes. It's both terrifying and fascinating and definitely makes me feel like I'm learning a new language. Possibly a symbolic one.

One of my PTA chums (yep, our kids are older now but that circle is still known at the PTA crowd, is celebrating her 60th this weekend.

even though she looks about 40, that figure brought me up sharp!

BeyondMyWits · 08/05/2022 08:23

My handbag is 22 years older than my colleague!

OldTinHat · 08/05/2022 08:37
