What makes you feel old?

Things that have made me feel old recently (I'm 39)

1 - getting the new iPhone and realising it looks the same and is just as shit as the one I got 7 years ago (as the ones from a year a two ago seem better, I've obviously missed something - something else to make me feel old!)

2 - how crap music videos are nowadays Where is the narrative? Or concept? It's all just people dancing in a desert. I want a tiny film. Give me something like the video to Murder on the Dancefoor by Sophie Ellis Bextor or Hey Ya by OutKast any day.

What has made you feel old recently? Please tell me I'm not alone and that life, as I suspected, has indeed gone to the dogs.

When filling in online forms it takes me about five minutes of scrolling to find my year of birth.

That today is my 45th Birthday and I chose to spend it visiting a garden centre!! How times have changed 😂

I'm more excited to go to the garden centre to buy bedding plants (10 years ago I didn't even know what bedding plants were!) than I am to buy clothes next week so I feel you!

2000 fashion coming back in!

I think "I see to wear that!" And shudder at the memory haha

Fluffy40 · 07/05/2022 18:40

Going to a parents evening thinking the sixth formers and teachers looks the same.

CoryWolfHeart · 07/05/2022 18:40

Also I saw some teens hide a spliff from me in the park and that really confirmed that I am perceived as An Adult Who May Lecture

This happened to me a few years ago and I didn't even think about what it meant!

OP, you've made me feel quite old by talking about Sophie Ellis Bextor and Outkast as if they are from a long time ago.. Grin

Ah sorry, they still seem like the cutting edge of pop culture for me too, if it helps Smile

The other day my 19 year old colleague told me she found it cute the way the older generation (me) typed on our phones.

A few hours later she asked if I’d heard of Rhianna.

How do you type that is different from them?

breakdown19 · 07/05/2022 18:46

For me a couple of things
I am a bit pudgy at the moment and bodily aches make me
Feel old

How frequently the grey grows back

And how long it takes me to find my year of birth from a drop

I was wondering seeing this too, I'm scared to find out if I type 'old'!

Finding Gardeners World absolutely fascinating. Becoming obsessed with birds. Hating nearly all music on the radio.
Getting really irate about spelling mistakes and poor grammar.
Realising that all my heroes from my youth are elderly or dying off.

KarmaComma · 07/05/2022 18:51

Seeing 'old' photos of my town from 1990s. Like when you see oldy worldy black and white pics that are vaguely recognisable of where you live, but all the people are long dead - except now these photos I remember the town looking like that.

When I moved schools and packed up the classroom I'd been in for 15years, and the kids saw floppy discs and asked what they were.

Going to a parents evening thinking the sixth formers and teachers looks the same.

Yes.

Although it was a few years ago this started happening to me. No idea which were teacher and which were 6th formers. The move to 6th formers wearing business suits has been very unhelpful in this respect Grin

Also yes to the scrolling for a long time to find my dob on on-line forms

Oh I've become obsessed with birds in my garden. Thought that was a lockdown thing but maybe it's an old thing!

Can't speak for pp, but I hold my phone in both hands and use both thumbs.
My (adult) dc use one hand.

NotaMary · 07/05/2022 18:55

My hands

For me it reminds me of my mother who went on and on about birds past a certain age. It was a family joke. I now find I am doing the same.

With your forefinger.

KarmaComma · 07/05/2022 18:56

And re heroes from your youth dying off - I recently went to a 'reunion' gig that one of my most favourite bands did. I'd loved them so much in my late teens/early 20s. I was nervous about going because it was at a really cool venue and thought me and my mates would stand out like a sore thumb, with everyone else being so young and hip. I was so relieved to walk in and find that the crowd were all really old. Then I realised they were the same age as me.

Topseyt123 · 07/05/2022 18:56

I felt old when I realised recently that my DD1 is now within a year of being the same age as I was when I gave birth to her. She is almost 27. I was 28 when I had her.

In fact, I feel old now realising that my three DDs are, just about, all now in their twenties! Where did my little girls go?

twomumsonebump · 07/05/2022 18:56

Having one of the kids I teach ask my what an ipod is, and then having. to explain that before ipods we had walkmans 😂

CJCreggsGoldfish · 07/05/2022 18:58

Hangovers!

Yes, ditto. My daughter is now older than I was when I had her!

Realising clothes you wore in your 20s are now classed as 'vintage'.. to me 'vintage' is anything from the 50s or 60s!! Sad

Mother87 · 07/05/2022 19:01

Having dinner with friends last night overlooking the pool area at a "cool" hotel... We didn't "feel" old, we just ARE old(er) in our late 50's/60's - but we all got a twinge seeing all the young women walking round in bikinis, all the boys watching them - knowing they were going to have a fun night full of frolics & flirtationGrin Wouldn't want to go back to that time EVER, but ya know...

catwomando · 07/05/2022 19:02

Realising that the son of a girl I went to school with, who (scandalously!) had a baby at 16, is now 40 years old. Forty. Fucking hell
