Why have I imposed this ridiculous rule on myself?

I seem to have developed a rule whereby I can only have one banana a day.. I’m not sure when it started but it’s been many years.

My husband has just brought me one for breakfast and I’m in a state of mild panic because I know I’ve packed one for my lunch!

I don’t have any such control or habits with any other food stuffs-yesterday I ate 2 hot cross buns, the day before I had 2 packets of crisps so it’s not like it’s doing me many favours on the calories front.

i love bananas and they are a lot healthier than crisps etc so why do I feel like this?!

i have to have two satsumas for it to count?
that is annoying

So annoying. Have one and a vitamin, you’ll be ok.

My kids laugh at me because I won’t eat the same thing twice in one day! I find it weird that ds can eg eat pasta salad for lunch and spaghetti bolognaise for dinner. I wouldn’t eat two wrapped biscuits like Kit Kats, but I’d eat a kit Kat mid morning and a digestive in the afternoon so 🤷‍♀️ I guess it is kind of arbitrary! Especially as I’d eat the two buns in one serving if I was hungry, but not at two separate times..

Yes, me too! I can have cheese for lunch or dinner but not both.

I haven’t eaten banana since a choking incident in the early ‘80s 😱

Why does this sound so much like a dodgy vintage porn scene?

Do you need help @LeniGray , or signposting to a fruit-based support scheme?

I also have banana fear. It stems from Peter Andre collapsing from potassium poisoning in my younger days.

Wasn't that a cover story for his 'roids causing him issues?

So fear not and embrace the yellow goodness Grin

LunaLoveFood · 05/05/2022 19:35

Personally if I have more than 1 a day, I get a really bad headache so I wouldn't have more than 1 a day too.

It was unintentional, my apologies - as soon as I posted it I questioned my use of the word ‘choking’ 😂I was only about 3 though, and I choked on a piece of banana, and subsequently developed a fear of them. I thought I’d processed my trauma, but maybe I’ve just repressed it? Screw bananas, apples are where it’s at 🤘

I’m the same op, I was told by someone years ago about bananas having high potassium content and more than one a day is too much. I ate 2 in one day once, was just really hungry, and am here to tell the tale.

“Was just really hungry” 😂😂😂

mrbreezeet1 · 05/05/2022 19:55

NO, YABU
My doctor told me I could eat as many bananas as I wanted to, because they are good for me.

Sciurus83 · 05/05/2022 20:01

BAHHAAHAHAHAAAA!!!!! Is that you Eric?!

Sciurus83 · 05/05/2022 20:01

gimmepeaceandsky · 05/05/2022 20:22

I don't know why but my brain also does this with bananas and eggs and tuna... but fortunately my brain will let me have 2 bananas and 2 eggs a day and 2 tons of tuna a week 😅
I'm assuming it's read soemthing somewhere at some point and it's resonated with me 🙈

Is that a typo and you meant two tins of tuna? 🤔 If not, that is a LOT!!! I think the OP's 2 bananas pales into comparison with two tons (tonnes?) of tuna.

Wednesdayafternoon · 05/05/2022 20:40

@Athenajm80 hahaha I can confirm it's two tins not tonnes 🙈😅
I don't think I'd be here to tel the story otherwise 🙊

ilovesushi · 05/05/2022 20:59

In early pregnancy I was really hungry and started eating more than one banana a day. I didn't have a conscious rule before that of no more than one, but I do remember feeling that two bananas was unknown territory!

KangarooKenny · 04/05/2022 06:32

Have you read something in the past about having too much potassium, and you have developed a fear from that, one deep in your subconscious ?

I also only allow myself one banana a day. And its a deep seated thing. My nan used to tell me they would make me constipated.

Longleggedgiraffe · 05/05/2022 21:11

YABU to even give it air time. Just accept you limit yoursrlf to one a day and save your worries for more important things.

Hmm1234 · 05/05/2022 21:15

I think just like this! It’s sugar overload something that’s stuck with me since childhood

JustLookingAtTractors · 05/05/2022 21:19

I would never eat more than one banana a day. Perhaps it’s because fruit was very expensive when I was a child, and my mother was still in thrall to bananas, having been born during rationing. A banana is still a rare and precious thing in the Tractors family.

I developed an allergy to bananas, was able to eat them as a toddler then started being sick immediately after having one. In my head, we were given a crate of bananas and I polished off the lot and actually 'sickened' myself to bananas. Pretty sure it's not true and we just took a long time to make the link between the fruit and the vomiting. Even happened with flavoured things like the gross yellow penicillin liquid! Wish I could have though, as pointed out they're a healthy, filling snack.

Crimesean · 05/05/2022 21:29

This kind of batshittery is why I love MN Grin

No, you won't overdose on potassium if you eat too many bananas, each one only has 450mg of potassium in it, and the RDA is 3,500mg, so you're a long way off.

I think the 'one banana a day' thing comes from diets - it's carb-heavy and higher in calories than many other fruits.

Workinghardeveryday · 04/05/2022 07:13

I remember when my brother was about 23, he fainted twice in a couple of days. Got taken to a n e. They said it was because he had 5 bananas both days and was the potassium......

That is odd. I remember when I was dieting (Slimming World) in my early 20’s, I kept a food diary for it. I was eating 15-17 bananas a day and had absolutely no issues at all! Did help me lose loads of weight!

Corkball · 05/05/2022 21:45

I’m loving these replies! I can confirm I’m still alive and well so may repeat the risky exercise in future if necessary but it definitely didn’t sit well with me.

to the poster who asked how I packed it-I have a nice squishy lunchbox inherited from my daughter now she is too cool to take anything except an old takeaway container to school which keeps it from getting bashed.
