Why have I imposed this ridiculous rule on myself?

I seem to have developed a rule whereby I can only have one banana a day.. I’m not sure when it started but it’s been many years.

My husband has just brought me one for breakfast and I’m in a state of mild panic because I know I’ve packed one for my lunch!

I don’t have any such control or habits with any other food stuffs-yesterday I ate 2 hot cross buns, the day before I had 2 packets of crisps so it’s not like it’s doing me many favours on the calories front.

i love bananas and they are a lot healthier than crisps etc so why do I feel like this?!

I had two yesterday, they are cheap and filling and are the ultimate convenience food, a lot better for you than biscuits.
As for constipation, I find bananas keep me "regular"😊

CornedBeef451 · 04/05/2022 09:29

For me it's the constipation!

One is fine, any more and I have problems.

Littleelffriend · 04/05/2022 10:34

I’m like this with eggs, can’t have more than 2

I’m the same with any fruit. I think it stems from being told we need to have 5 different fruits and veggies a day, so I try not to waste it on having the same one twice as otherwise I need 6 😂

Yes - this is what it is for me. When I'm aiming to get my 5 a day in, I don't want to eat extra fruit if it's not even going to count!

If I was you OP I'd swap the banana in my lunch for an apple or something!

Spudlet · 04/05/2022 11:23

Is it because bananas are minging? Because they ARE. 🤢😂

Cryingintherain99 · 04/05/2022 09:00

I remember my mum telling me as a child that having a glass of milk while eating cucumber was "poison".
I always thought it was just one of those old wives tales until I googled it recently! It's not as drastic as she made out, but she definitely didn't make it up.

Have you got a link please? I can't find anything sensible.

It's probably because you turn into Bananaman OP.
Whilst you don't remember turning into Bananaman, on a subconscious level do you know that it's very tiring being a superhero once a day, without having to sneak in an extra bit of heroism after breakfast too.

😀😀😀
my 6yo is only allowed 2 a day. Otherwise we’d have to buy bananas on a daily basis. One day he will turn around in his mid thirties and freak out about possibly exceeding the banana limit and it will be my fault.

grapehyacinthisactuallyblue · 04/05/2022 12:19

I mean, too much of anything can be bad for you, but 2 bananas in a day won't kill you, I'm sure.

Stomacharmeleon · 04/05/2022 15:18

They use them to bung me up if my crohns is bad :) 'they' being the hospital.....

On a completely different note my friend came for supper last night and nearly fainted as I had done a roast. On a Tuesday..... how decadent!

shumway · 04/05/2022 16:43

I have all sorts of rules that make no sense - like I'll scoff sugary food all the time but won't let a sugary drink pass my lips. And I do feel weird if I have certain food items more than once in a day but with other things like bread I don't.

GillyGumbo · 04/05/2022 16:48

I distinctly recall my mother warning of terrible constipation if one were to consume more than one banana a day.

And like a PP, I was also struck with indecision when it came to a 2nd avocado! What are the rules on avocados? Is 2 acceptable, or does a 2nd cause irreversible fat gain around ones visceral organs?

emmathedilemma · 04/05/2022 16:57

Have you ever done Weight watchers? I did it online years ago when fruit and veg were "free" but people were obsessed with bananas and not eating more than one a day, and if you did you should point it!

MargaretThursday · 04/05/2022 16:59

Did Eric only have one a day?

Wanderingowl · 04/05/2022 08:48

I have two bananas most days. Three if they are small. I also use them a lot in baking, so my average daily banana intake is at least 2.5 big bananas. Tbf, I exercise for several hours most days, so do have a high need for potassium replacement.

Are you an athlete? I’m always fascinated how people fit 3 plus hours a day of exercise in if you work etc, just curious!

pinacolada321 · 04/05/2022 17:04

Everydaydayisaschoolday · 04/05/2022 07:22

It's a very arbitrary rule - what if the bananas were the small 'snack size' ones? Then 3 of them would be the equivalent of a big banana.

incidentally did you realise a banana is technically not a fruit or vegetable but a herb? I still count it towards my fruit/veg targets though.

Sorry what?! A herb?!

Yes I am also extremely strict with sugary drinks. That came from having a brace and having the fear of god drummed into me that my teeth would be ruined and brown if I drank them.

I ate the second banana at lunch time and so far no ill effects and I haven’t turned into banana man as far as I know!

I’m the same I never have more than 1 a day but I’ve never really thought about it until now. I like bananas semi ripe too not green but not yellow either firm and just on the turn before they would be considered ripe. Some guy gave me grief for searching all the bananas for the perfect colour once. He didn’t understand my banana obsession!

RosieLemonadeAndSugar · 04/05/2022 20:45

Why have two bananas at approx 100 calories each when you can have 100 calories on something much nicer Cake

Probably doesn’t exist, although cucumbers washed down with milk sounds revolting…

Having said that, there’s a Polish dish that basically consists of cucumbers sliced into plain yogurt, so it’s just possible this one’s a big fat myth.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 04/05/2022 20:48

i cant have oranges or satsumas with tea or coffee, it would curdle

i forget to buy bananas and when i do, i forget to eat them

Moonflower12 · 04/05/2022 20:52

@ThomasinaGallico
Now I'm worried I've poisoned 7 small children at school! Snack was crackers, cheese and cucumber with a glass of milk!

feathers7 · 04/05/2022 20:56

I very rarely eat bananas, since I heard them referred to as the mars bar of fruit...

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 04/05/2022 20:58

I do miss bananas. DH is allergic (and I love him more) so we don't have them in the house...

Isn't that basically what tzatziki is too? It seems to be a pretty popular combination for something that's so poisonous!

I went to a diet club once where a woman broke down sobbing because she hadn't lost weight that week even though she was 100% on plan all week.

She was also on two different medications that had to be taken with food throughout the day and because she didn't want to waste her syns on the 1/2 a biscuit she usually had with each pill she had switched to a whole banana each time. So was having 6 bananas a day (on top of 3 meals) so had inadvertently eaten an extra 3 days worth of calories just in Bananas.

But she didn't die of potassium poisoning.

And that is why SW is such a fucking awful cult in terms of physical and mental health.
