Why have I imposed this ridiculous rule on myself?

I seem to have developed a rule whereby I can only have one banana a day.. I’m not sure when it started but it’s been many years.

My husband has just brought me one for breakfast and I’m in a state of mild panic because I know I’ve packed one for my lunch!

I don’t have any such control or habits with any other food stuffs-yesterday I ate 2 hot cross buns, the day before I had 2 packets of crisps so it’s not like it’s doing me many favours on the calories front.

i love bananas and they are a lot healthier than crisps etc so why do I feel like this?!

I once had a phase of eating quite a lot of bananas and they gave me really bad stomachache. Maybe you are subconsciously protecting yourself from discomfort, bananas are hard to digest I believe.

woodhill · 05/05/2022 18:02

I'm the same too

Desmondo2021 · 05/05/2022 18:03

I think it's something like 16 bananas in one sitting before you are anywhere near potassium poisoning territory 😂

Bpdqueen · 05/05/2022 18:10

I have the same rule I have no idea why I think its one of them random things past down the generations 🤣

It's probably because you turn into Bananaman OP.
Whilst you don't remember turning into Bananaman, on a subconscious level do you know that it's very tiring being a superhero once a day, without having to sneak in an extra bit of heroism after breakfast too.

😭😭😭💀

You have won the Internet today

Flopisfatteningbingforchristmas · 05/05/2022 18:31

I limit my toddler to 1 a day or she becomes constipated.

Gwenhwyfar · 05/05/2022 18:35

What's the problem though? Just don't have the one you were going to have after lunch?

Thisoneisnottaken · 05/05/2022 18:35

The rule is sound. Anything else would just be bananas 😀

DomesticatedZombie · 05/05/2022 18:40

I don't really like bananas, OP; you can have my banana allowance for a whole week if you like!

Gwenhwyfar · 05/05/2022 18:41

"And that is why SW is such a fucking awful cult in terms of physical and mental health."

Oh come on. Not SW's fault that woman had no common sense.

Apricote · 05/05/2022 18:41

Bananas are expensive!

Yes I am also extremely strict with sugary drinks. That came from having a brace and having the fear of god drummed into me that my teeth would be ruined and brown if I drank them.

I ate the second banana at lunch time and so far no ill effects and I haven’t turned into banana man as far as I know!

OP has not been back since. I hope no terrible banana-related fate has befallen you, OP.

Lethal injection is a potassium injection... very high or very low potassium can cause heart arrhythmia as can Magnesium. Potassium and Magnesium deficiencies are quite common. Thr argiculture soils have around 40% less Magnesium now than in the 50s.

Loopytiles · 05/05/2022 18:50

How do you ‘pack’ bananas for a packed lunch without them being ruined?

I think the ‘no more than one’ could be a bit like things like bobbles, biros and socks going missingp. Bananas are psychologically more calorific than other fruits and less appealing than hyper-palatable foods like biscuits, crisps and cake. So it’s easier to keep a vague ‘rule’ for bananas than the other foods.

itssquidstella · 05/05/2022 18:52

I love this thread. I wouldn't have more than one banana a day, but I am currently 37 weeks pregnant and have developed a serious citrus addiction - am on 3-4 easy peelers a day and that's me rationing my consumption!

Jack80 · 05/05/2022 18:58

I am the same

GrouchyKiwi · 05/05/2022 19:03

1 banana per day is the rule in this house too, and the reason is constipation.

My personal rule is no bananas ever, unless they're in banana cake/loaf/bread. Foul revolting things. Banoffee pie is also revolting.

MrsRinaDecker · 05/05/2022 19:07

My kids laugh at me because I won’t eat the same thing twice in one day! I find it weird that ds can eg eat pasta salad for lunch and spaghetti bolognaise for dinner. I wouldn’t eat two wrapped biscuits like Kit Kats, but I’d eat a kit Kat mid morning and a digestive in the afternoon so 🤷‍♀️ I guess it is kind of arbitrary! Especially as I’d eat the two buns in one serving if I was hungry, but not at two separate times..

TinselTinsel · 05/05/2022 19:08

I have nothing helpful to say OP but thanks for yhe giggle 🤣

Ridingoutthewaves · 05/05/2022 19:10

I had no idea it was 5 Different fruit and veg a day I have been doing it all wrong. I also feel I am over doing it by eating more than 1 banana a day.

LeniGray · 05/05/2022 19:12

I haven’t eaten banana since a choking incident in the early ‘80s 😱

LETHAL INJECTION BY BANANA

I very rarely eat bananas, since I heard them referred to as the mars bar of fruit...

This-bananas are full of carbs and have the equivalent of 5.7 teaspoons in them.

I went to a diet club once where a woman broke down sobbing because she hadn't lost weight that week even though she was 100% on plan all week.

She was also on two different medications that had to be taken with food throughout the day and because she didn't want to waste her syns on the 1/2 a biscuit she usually had with each pill she had switched to a whole banana each time. So was having 6 bananas a day (on top of 3 meals) so had inadvertently eaten an extra 3 days worth of calories just in Bananas.

But she didn't die of potassium poisoning.

6 bananas a day?! That's hilarious.

7 bananas a week is a lot. Any more than that and I'd be in overdose territory.

KettrickenSmiled · 05/05/2022 19:21

i wouldnt have more than one banana or more than one apple or satsuma

Oh dear, I read this as " ... or more than one apple or sultana" @MrsLargeEmbodied . That really is taking fruit-restriction to extremes.

OP - & all the other nutters interesting & quirky posters - your foible is sweet, & hilarious.
