Why have I imposed this ridiculous rule on myself?

I seem to have developed a rule whereby I can only have one banana a day.. I’m not sure when it started but it’s been many years.

My husband has just brought me one for breakfast and I’m in a state of mild panic because I know I’ve packed one for my lunch!

I don’t have any such control or habits with any other food stuffs-yesterday I ate 2 hot cross buns, the day before I had 2 packets of crisps so it’s not like it’s doing me many favours on the calories front.

i love bananas and they are a lot healthier than crisps etc so why do I feel like this?!

i wouldnt have more than one banana or more than one apple or satsuma

but satsumas are small! You need to have two to count as one portion of your 5/7+ a day!

i have to have two satsumas for it to count?
that is annoying

MangoBiscuit · 04/05/2022 07:45

I had awful cravings for green bananas when I was pregnant with DD2. I probably ate 3-4 a day. Only side effect was my iron levels stayed really healthy.

Throwawaytoday · 04/05/2022 07:46

Bananas = potassium = spontaneous human combustion, obvs.

scrivette · 04/05/2022 07:47

I will only have a one a day as well, no idea why!

3luckystars · 04/05/2022 07:59

I ate 2 yesterday and feel ok this morning.

FromOurHatsToOurFeet · 04/05/2022 08:04

A friend of my dad's has a potassium deficiency and has to eat loads of them a day. He's always got a banana in his hand. They constantly take the piss out of him for it.

Summersdreaming · 04/05/2022 08:05

I feel the same about takeaways or eating out- weekend is fine, but during the week it feels almost illegal. It's ridiculous and even when we moved house and had no way of cooking, ordering a pizza on a Monday felt very risqué. I don't know how this started 😂

Tryhard40 · 04/05/2022 08:06

I had two bananas yesterday.

I've always been a rebel though.

LadyCatStark · 04/05/2022 08:11

There was a big push when I was a child/ teenager about only eating one banana a day due to potassium, so it’ll be a throw back to that. I think it was around the time that they said we should only eat one egg a day.

tiredanddangerous · 04/05/2022 08:17

I feel your pain op. Bananas are so stressful. I'm so particular about the green:ripeness ratio that there's only a window of about half an hour where they're edible. If I miss the window I get no banana 😢

lalaloopyhead · 04/05/2022 08:23

I don't think I would conisder eating more than one banana per day, I think I thought they caused constipation - no idea where I got that from. In fact I am even cautious about eating one banana a day on mutiple consequtive days!
I think I believe that the same rule applies to eggs......

stuntbubbles · 04/05/2022 08:23

Is more than one unappeeling?

We’re actually meant to have 9 fruit and veg a day but they knew no one would do that so made it more realistic: gwan and have your second banana and make it a 6 fruit and veg day!

My husband also lives by this window. I’m much less fussy about the actual banana than I am about the frequency!

i think it must be the potassium thing alongside not wanting to run out.

i also get the ‘wasting a 5 day’ angle even though it’s bonkers!

im glad others are equally weird!

Years ago I was like this and would only let dd’s have one banana a day. Then I joined slimming world so basically lived on bananas and ham for snacks so was averaging 3 per day 🤭
i don’t have the “banana fear” any more since I lived to tell the tale and now dd’s would have two every day . They are cheap , filling and healthy !

Trivester · 04/05/2022 08:27

I’m amazed I’m still alive. I had no idea food was so complicated.

KarenOLantern · 04/05/2022 08:29

I've read that too, but I just find it hard to get my head around... I don't know if I eat 9 portions in total of anything per day, let alone purely fruit and veg.

Anyway, I just came to say I feel weird eating more than one banana too and I have absolutely no idea why. I'd certainly never heard about having too much potassium being a problem. I suppose they just feel so filling that it feels weird to fill up on so much of one thing. A bit like how I don't like giving my daughter flapjack at lunch if she's had porridge for breakfast, just because it's just lots and lots and lots of oats.

You can count one as a half portion

Deedee248 · 04/05/2022 08:30

I absolutely loathe bananas so never have this problem. Wish I liked them though. 😁
(Misses point entirely)!

Harrysutton · 04/05/2022 08:33

I also have banana fear. It stems from Peter Andre collapsing from potassium poisoning in my younger days.

Wanderingowl · 04/05/2022 08:48

I have two bananas most days. Three if they are small. I also use them a lot in baking, so my average daily banana intake is at least 2.5 big bananas. Tbf, I exercise for several hours most days, so do have a high need for potassium replacement.

mustlovegin · 04/05/2022 08:59

Bananas are a tad difficult to digest 😬One is enough OP

Cryingintherain99 · 04/05/2022 09:00

I remember my mum telling me as a child that having a glass of milk while eating cucumber was "poison".
I always thought it was just one of those old wives tales until I googled it recently! It's not as drastic as she made out, but she definitely didn't make it up.

Daenerys77 · 04/05/2022 09:00

It's a rare day when I don't eat a couple of small bananas, but they have to be perfectly ripe with no green or brown bits, so a lot of banana bread gets baked in my house.

lljkk · 04/05/2022 09:09

I've eaten 5-6 enormous bananas in one sitting. More than once in my life. Zero ill effects.

CornedBeef451 · 04/05/2022 09:19

For me it's the constipation!

One is fine, any more and I have problems.
