Why have I imposed this ridiculous rule on myself?

I seem to have developed a rule whereby I can only have one banana a day.. I’m not sure when it started but it’s been many years.

My husband has just brought me one for breakfast and I’m in a state of mild panic because I know I’ve packed one for my lunch!

I don’t have any such control or habits with any other food stuffs-yesterday I ate 2 hot cross buns, the day before I had 2 packets of crisps so it’s not like it’s doing me many favours on the calories front.

i love bananas and they are a lot healthier than crisps etc so why do I feel like this?!

I also only allow myself one banana a day. And its a deep seated thing. My nan used to tell me they would make me constipated.

Constipation.....deep seated....... I see what you did there 😎

MissusMaisel · 05/05/2022 22:47

I eat two bananas most days. I'm not dead or constipated.

Plinkyplankyplonk · 05/05/2022 23:35

If you eat too many unripe bananas you'll get constipation. If you eat too many ripe or over ripe bananas you'll get diarrhoea. Easy to remember, the firmness of the banana will dictate the firmness of your poop!

Gagaandgag · 06/05/2022 00:04

I do this too! And have also imposed it on my children eek!!! Didn’t actually realise Until this post

Dear Corkball,

Apologies I have not read all your replies.

I can't proffer any explanation as to why you may have imposed this rule on yourself ?
However what i consider to be very positive is the fact that although you may have obeyed this rule for 'years' it has not led you to impose other foodstuff rules, or other ones, on yourself.
A member of my family began with one food item, which became a list, which took them to imposing other restrictions eg clothing types and colours, places to sit, forms of transport and an ever growing list.
I am not belittling your issue, as it is both frustrating and concerning for you,
but hopefully it hasn't and won't lead to similar lists being needed and created.
Our family member was diagnosed as having serious anxiety issues, which initially didn't present itself in any other area of their life, or how they seemed, until the list making and its consequences became debilitating for them, and the family.
They are in a better place now, but it was life changing for both them and us.

I ate 2 bananas one day in May 2007, my life hasn't been the same since

I remember my mum telling me as a child that having a glass of milk while eating cucumber was "poison".
I always thought it was just one of those old wives tales until I googled it recently! It's not as drastic as she made out, but she definitely didn't make it up.

Wait, what?

3luckystars · 06/05/2022 07:20

I need to know too about the poison!!!

A few years ago, my uncle was dying the hospital. He was really old and very near the end and while I was in visiting him, my aunt (his sister) arrived in to the room. He did not have much time for her and I think he was trying to keep his mouth busy but anyway, he ate a banana from his table. Then a while later, he reached for another banana and my aunt said ‘no you can’t have that’ and she told me take it off him!! (He had only a few days to live)
I was saying ‘leave him have what he wants’ and she was saying ‘there is too much potassium, they are dangerous!!!’ Anyway, she went out to call a nurse to take the bananas off the poor man for fear he would overdose!! He died really shortly afterwards. I’m almost sure it wasn’t the second banana that did it.

Imissmoominmama · 06/05/2022 07:51

Every time I buy a bunch of bananas, I marvel at what good value they are…

Queenbee77 · 06/05/2022 08:14

Its impossible to overdose in bananas. You would need to eat ...like 200....they only have a small level of potassium and you should eat at least 2 a day if you want it to help your potassium intake. Eat bananas! Go ahead......they are freely available and not like during WW2 when you couldnt get any as my gran used to frequently tell me!

Fernticket · 06/05/2022 09:17

I have had 2 🍌 a day on occasions and I am still here to tell the tale😊

Tillow4ever · 05/05/2022 21:34

That is odd. I remember when I was dieting (Slimming World) in my early 20’s, I kept a food diary for it. I was eating 15-17 bananas a day and had absolutely no issues at all! Did help me lose loads of weight!

MushMonster · 04/05/2022 07:12

You are right to stick to one per day.
What you need to do is extend the rule to cross buns and crisps 😁
They are rich in potassium, which is good in moderate amount, but not in large amounts. They are healthy, but rich in fats and calories of which you do not want too many. So one is good. Also, you do not really need to eat one daily.

Not rich in fats at all. They are rich in carbohydrate.
'fats and calories of which you do not want too many'
Calories are a unit of energy. Fat is energy dense. We all have certain daily energy needs. You want as much energy as you need. Some, but not much, should come from fat. The source, and therefore quality, of energy matters. I personally think two bananas would be preferable as a source of energy than two hot cross buns unless they're the M&S chocolate ones obvs

LeeN637 · 06/05/2022 10:16

A few years ago, at a check-up, I mentioned I was having a banana a day, and the nurse was very disapproving, though she didn't say why (possibly the potassium thing).

I assume you heard something about it, but have forgotten it on a conscious level, but not on a subconscious one. If that's so, you have to try and convince yourself that it's fine to occasionally have more than one a day.

wentworthinmate · 06/05/2022 10:31

Just have a Snickers bar instead.

Longcovid21 · 06/05/2022 10:32

Cos they are radioactive? Not joking 😂

DameHelena · 06/05/2022 11:48

Everydaydayisaschoolday · 04/05/2022 07:22

It's a very arbitrary rule - what if the bananas were the small 'snack size' ones? Then 3 of them would be the equivalent of a big banana.

incidentally did you realise a banana is technically not a fruit or vegetable but a herb? I still count it towards my fruit/veg targets though.

A HERB?!??!

Corkball · 06/05/2022 16:27

Radioactive?? If I’d ever heard that before that’s definitely what’s triggered it!

I have banana in the morning with my oats and usually that’s it for the day as I prefer carrying an apple with me. There is the risk of banana mash. It’s probably also better to eat a variety. I limit the crisps though to 2 packs per year.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 06/05/2022 19:35

i nearly bought a bunch today
but there was nothing else i needed available so i put them back

hihellohihello · 06/05/2022 19:58

Does it matter? I don't think I would eat more than one banana in a day. Just don't eat the other banana at lunch and save it for the next day. It's good to get a variety of foods.

BarbaraofSeville · 06/05/2022 20:20

Yes Bananas are slightly radioactive but unless you eat dozens of them and you have poor kidney function, it doesn't increase your natural radiation dose.

lljkk · 06/05/2022 22:37

TransAtlantic flight, 800 bananas, TransAtlantic flight, 800 bananas, TransAtlantic flight, 800 bananas : gosh, so hard to choose!

Why have I imposed this ridiculous rule on myself?
ThomasinaGallico · 08/05/2022 09:23

Wouldn’t you get more radioactivity just by travelling to Cornwall or parts of Somerset?

(Beware of Eden Project bananas…😂)
