Would you find this sufficient for lunch?

A small m&s side salad.

I saw someone have this and this alone for their lunch, and imply anything more is greedy.

I suspect competitive undereating*, but do you think this is tiny/normal/lots? I'd be bloody starving 5 minutes later 😂

*Unfortunately I've worked with a few of these in the past and just roll my eyes.

Would you find this sufficient for lunch?

I hate this competitive undereating amongst the school mum's at my dc school. I went for breakfast with some school mums and I ordered American pancakes. They all ordered black coffee and sat there staring at me eating my pancakes with fruit and maple syrup! Grin Blush I did feel a teensy bit guilty but more worried that they hexxed me & I'd get a bellyache afterwards! Grin

I think that's fine. I rarely eat lunch & if I do it's always a snack type of thing ..

If I have a big breakfast then I'm never hungry enough for lunch ..

I hate when people roll their eyes. At my old place of work some women would always roll their eyes at me if I had a cup of tea & a cereal bar or small salad for lunch... I wouldn't judge anyone's choice of eating 😃 we're all different

My 8 year old daughter would love this, but I'm not showing her because she's not that worthy of a salad. She can have a limp Lidl salad and be warm next winter! 🤣 Can't be affording M&S posh nosh for an 8yr old in this economy!

All jokes aside - This sounds like an eating disorder and possibly self esteem issues/jaded.

If you know you can eat more and you feel healthy and good about yourself, you don't need their food validation.

HappydaysArehere · 28/03/2022 19:29

I have oats and yoghurt for breakfast and this is really sustaining. Lunch is a banana usually but we eat our main meal early evening.

RosesAndHellebores · 28/03/2022 19:29

When I was thin I would have had that for lunch and no breakfast, sometimes not dinner. However those days are long gone and I am a recovered anorexic. If the person has a sensible breakfast and sensible dinner it is fine though.

ThanksItHasPockets · 28/03/2022 19:29

@EndaDay

It's absolutely fine for lunch. No wonder there is an obesity problem in this country.

If you have a breakfast of 2 slices of buttered toast, an egg and a slice of melon-that's about 400-450 calories.

A banana mid morning-100 calories

that salad for lunch-150 calories

a digestive biscuit mid afternoon-100 calories

that's 800 cals, not including milk or sugar if you take them in drinks. If you do, it could bring it up to 1000.

An evening meal and glass of wine-about 700 calories.

You're getting up to about 1800 calories-ample.

Perhaps if you’re short or incredibly sedentary. I have a basal metabolic rate of around 1600kcal even if I literally do not stir from my bed.
Riseholme · 28/03/2022 19:30

I always eat breakfast, usually cereal.
I don’t eat much for lunch so I would probably eat that salad but would still want peanuts or a bag of crisps too, I love carbs though.

PenguinPup · 28/03/2022 19:30

@Tillymintpolo

Needs a side of chips
I thought this too!
crocus776 · 28/03/2022 19:30

What dress size is the lady who consumed this?

FabFitFifties · 28/03/2022 19:30

Were people at work making comments about her small lunch, thus prompting her comments? I can't bear people feeling the need to comment on people's food. Unless it's to say something nice. In my extremely skinny twenties, I would eat a breakfast at home, another cooked one, in the canteen at work, then a rather large curry and chips, with a pot of cottage cheese on top. That lunch was a mountain and was often followed by desert 🤣People could not just mind their own business and let me enjoy it without comment. I imagine if I had not been thin and fit, but overweight, there would have been comments too. I needed those calories. I eat far less now but I am much heavier, because I am far less active. I imagine if people are commenting on her lack of calories it will be equally annoying. Actually, I'm annoyed I've commented now so I'm going 😅

Magicandspiders · 28/03/2022 19:31

That would be enough for me.

HisHX · 28/03/2022 19:32

I’d prefer to have tuna or a boiled egg with it, but I always eat v light lunches at work - anything more and I find I slump in the afternoon. I eat huge dinners though. Ideally it would be the other way round I know.
Implying anything more is greedy is plainly ridiculous though, if they did.

God, how dreary. I’d have been having pancakes with you (probably with bacon on the side).

@JungleJimbo

I would be STUFFED after that

Apple is so high in sugar, and there's a high cal dressing so would keep me going til breakfast the next day

Really can't understand how some people eat so much Shock

I genuinely only need two meals a day ... I eat because I am greedy not because I am hungry Blush - and I am overweight- not a few pounds or a 'big' 14 Hmm. I am in the obese category ... so if I ate a sensible breakfast... that salad for lunch and a balanced dinner I would be fine. I am over 60 and lead a sedentary lifestyle.

But I know I eat too much .... my lunch today was an M & S sandwich and a large pack of crisps. I wasn't hungry, I just 'fancied' it.

Malibuismysecrethome · 28/03/2022 19:40

Doesn’t VB have similar for lunch and dinner?

stormswiftlysweetafton · 28/03/2022 19:41

Just a salad? No met/protein or bread? No, I'd still be hungry and very grumpy at having only a salad to eat!

If someone was trying to do a very light lunch, fine, but they're wrong to suggest that it's a normal lunch or a person with a typical appetite.

1forAll74 · 28/03/2022 19:42

It would be fine for me for lunch., if you have had a decent breakfast. You can get used to eating small amounts of food like this.

No. I'd have to add some protein like ham or an egg.
JellyfishandShells · 28/03/2022 19:45

I’m not keen on lunch - not bothered and quite happily miss it out ( more an evening eater) but that salad with dressing would have the effect of sharpening my appetite and making me want something.

CactusFlowers · 28/03/2022 19:45

I’d be hungry if that’s all I had. Add in some protein and it might be ok.

theyhavenothingbuttheaudacity · 28/03/2022 19:45

Op if you'd have asked in the real world almost everyone would have said no way is it enough. But you made the mistake of asking on MN where laydeeeez eat like sparrows and get utterly bloated on two goji berries and a thimble full of birdseed. This salad would be enough to feed their family of 8 academics for a week
