Warsaw Russian is letting out a lot of smoke - there has been no decision on who among them will be the next pontiff.

Biden is going there Friday

Is Boris Johnson the designated survivor?

Who the heck let me be in charge?

@TiddyTidTwo

Contrary to my post yesterday with Biden talking to the troops I thought his speech delivered to the Polish president was very good and certainly, very strongly made the message re NATO and the alliance.
Agree, & very glad Biden is POTUS and not Trump.

JB isn't perfect, who is? but he understands the importance of NATO, the EU and has to navigate what the US public will agree too, what Zelenskyy wants and what wont drive Putin into doing something crazy.

EsmaCannonball · 26/03/2022 13:48

Biden is in talks with the more hawkish Poles so that's why Russia is going all 'Nuclear! Nuclear! Nuclear!'

Ijsbear · 26/03/2022 13:57

@PaperTyger

Ljsbear agree. Unless Russia turns democratic, helps rebuild.. reparations etc and I'm sure after this Ukraine will be concentrating on having the biggest military they can. Conscription and so on and maybe even nuke's
About nukes I should think they want them yes. Given that they gave up their nukes on the basis of guarentees of independence.

I should think Poland, Latvia, Estonia and all the other countries will want them too.

PaperTyger · 26/03/2022 14:15

Yes And who can blame rhem7

Ijsbear · 26/03/2022 14:22

Seems Japan's premier is talking about getting nukes too. Not jsut because of china but because of North Korea

AlecTrevelyan006 · 26/03/2022 14:23

I think both the US and the U.K. have f do one a pretty good job supporting Ukraine

Alexandra2001 · 26/03/2022 14:25

That would be crazy, we need less countries with nukes... not more, no one can guarantee who will get into power nor what they might demand....

Over time, Ukraines best bet (first they have to defeat Russia don't forget) is a more moderate russian leader and join Nato & EU.

Russia needs bring back into the international, a NK style Russia suits no one.

The big problem for europe is the next US elections, just 2 years away, by no means certain a pro nato president will be elected.

US has given over $2 billion to Ukraine, quite amazing.

As much as the UK has given in aid etc it is let down very badly by its attitude on refugees.

youhadmeatjello · 26/03/2022 14:32

I was feeling like things were looking quite promising but then I come back to this thread and feel really naive as it looks like that’s not the case?
I missed the latest nuclear talk as well.

I’m going away next weekend and keep feeling vaguely worried about going (largely because I’m going without DS) which I know is ridiculous!

youhadmeatjello · 26/03/2022 14:33

I agree that we have an appalling attitude to refugees.

I agree

I’ve overall been happy re Biden as he’s been a stabilising element and in many ways sets the tone for NATO.

I’m not sure how much in £ U.K. have given added up in comparison (and proportionally)

PaperTyger · 26/03/2022 14:41

I think this has been a massive wake up call to NATO And I think all NATO members will up their budgets and Keep the military in good working order.

In two year's time I think it Will be far stronger, Germany Also armed by then and then thankfully won't need such reliance on USA!

PaperTyger · 26/03/2022 14:42

Alexandra I agree but who wants to be this open to invasion in the future?
I don't blame any of them for wanting nuke's

PestorPeston · 26/03/2022 14:50

An insight into the almost torturous politics of Turkey, the EU and politics in a region we often ignore.

Nearly 35 percent of the Russian generals first sent to Ukraine appear to now have been killed, per Western estimates.

Here’s @ForeignPolicy ’s story this week about the deaths of 🇷🇺 generals. Western officials have confirmed 2 more deaths since.

Russian generals have had to lead from the front because its amateur army can’t move otherwise.

RedToothBrush · 26/03/2022 15:09

Given that Putin started to talk about JKR this has now happened:

Hadley Freeman @HadleyFreeman
Apparently Putin was radicalised on Mumsnet

Emma Burnell @EmmaBurnell_
So glad we've identified the woman responsible for Vladimir Putin's evil. Was really worrying me for a while that we didn't have a woman to blame.

doofdoofdoof @DoofDoofson
Word is he wasn’t that bad til he started going on Mumsnet.

GinaScot not a bot @gina_scot
AIBU? Neighbours invited me for cocktails and they made Molotov but I wanted White Russians round their place so I parked my tanks round theirs. Diagram attached.

( gets coat sorry couldn't resist )

WeAreTheHeroes · 26/03/2022 15:51

The BBC is reporting that there have been three large explosions on the outskirts of Lviv.

Ijsbear · 26/03/2022 15:58

That thread on hazing mentions that many conscripts are pushed or downright forced into signing a permanent contract. Presumably that means they arent really happy to be there either and their heart isnt in the fighting.

MagicFox · 26/03/2022 15:59

So focusing on the east was a lie? Is his intention to escalate?

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 26/03/2022 16:05

It doesn't make sense. They are overstretched, can barely hold their positions. Why are they fucking around with Lviv?

notimagain · 26/03/2022 16:05

@MagicFox

Not sure it’s that (yet).

Wonder if it’s cruise or short’ish range ballistic missile strikes of the sort Russia has been indulging in, even occasionally in the west of Ukraine, on an irregular basis since this conflict started.

WeAreTheHeroes · 26/03/2022 16:07

Sounds to me like a warning shot across the bow. The Russian leadership can't be trusted and I wouldn't put it past them to be targeting Lviv due to the proximity to Poland. I think President Boden is in Rzeszow.

To lose one General is a tragedy. To lose seven is just plain careless.

Could well be an element of that (FWIW I think POTUS was in Rzeszow yesterday, he’s in/near Warsaw today??)

The TV footage from LVIV I’m seeing appears to show a fire at a what might be a large fuel storage depot/installation…

Even if the Russian intent really is now to concentrate on the East it would make military sense to target fuel/oil supply installations elsewhere in the country.

youhadmeatjello · 26/03/2022 16:34

Are the peace talks still ongoing? Haven’t seen anything about this for a while unless I’ve missed it?
