Warsaw Russian is letting out a lot of smoke - there has been no decision on who among them will be the next pontiff.

Biden is going there Friday

Is Boris Johnson the designated survivor?

Who the heck let me be in charge?

Also it does start to make you wonder what exactly Belarus are waiting for.
Lukashenko knows that once he sends a significant % of troops away, he'll immediately have street riots in Minsk. 2020 was a very close touch for him.

@RedToothBrush

Victor Kovalenko *@mrkovalenko* [1] The #Belarus President Alexander #Lukashenko fooled #Putin promising him recently in Moscow that he will invade #Ukraine this Monday, March 21, said aide of Ukraine internal affairs minister Anton **@Gerashchenko7**.

[2] #Russia expected that #Belarus Army would invade the western #Volyn area of #Ukraine and develop offensive south to the city of #Lviv to cut the arms supply routes from Europe, said aide of Ukraine internal affairs minister Anton @Gerashchenko7.

[3] #Lukashenko's decision not to invade #Ukraine angered Putin's inner circles, so they started thinking about how to remove him from power in #Belarus, incl. via military coup executed by the Russian agents in local KGB and army - aide of Ukr. IA minister Anton @Gerashchenko7.

No idea whether this has any truth but the mere suggestion of it is incredible.

Also it does start to make you wonder what exactly Belarus are waiting for.

Lukashenko must be torn between his fear of Russia (if he doesn't join) and his fear of his people turning on him if he does. I've been wondering about a Belarusian coup for a few days now, but I assumed it would come from within Belarus and not set up by the Russians.

@PaperTyger

Isn't mining a war crimes
Not necessarily.

Long story short: It depends on how/where they are deployed.

ClaudineClare · 23/03/2022 07:34

Tracked you down. I wonder how many threads we will end up having.

It is two years today since the first UK lockdown. Who would have imagined war was lurking in the future...

mpsw · 23/03/2022 07:34

@PaperTyger

Isn't mining a war crimes
Not necessarily. It depends on how they are used.

If mines are laid without marking and recording them for later removal then that can be a war crime.

But used to deny ground, which th the required precautions for later safe removal, then they're another weapon of war.

Ijsbear · 23/03/2022 07:35

@PaperTyger

Posting this again thought it summed things up, Russia a gas station run by the mafia masquerading as a country. Putin, can't sell more oil? Let's kill more children
Good one.

Thanks for starting the new thread Preston

TiddyTidTwo it's lovely to hear you've volunteered. Kudos and every respect.

@RedToothBrush That would be fantastic if true... but MOD is saying Russia is in holding as they re organise and then will continue their war, R4 is reporting that a column of russian tanks have been destroyed.

Everyone is saying how brilliant the UK is doing in supporting UKR but are we? are we supporting their peoples as they flee? how many refugees have we taken? it took ministerial intervention to secure some children to come to Scotland after being held up by british red tape :(
the men fighting need to know their families are safe and we need to step up! a few 1000 when there are millions needing help is poor.

Zelenskyy tells most countries they are the best, he butters up their ego's.
Sweden for example is sending over 5000 anti tank missiles & it is the US european command that is managing the supply of weapons to UKR.

What i do find disappointing that the Johnson isn't invited to the EU's defence summit, Biden will be there.

Brexit casts a v long shadow and i hope those who supported Brexit take stock and can now see exactly why Putin wanted it.... it divides Europe.

Everyone who's helping with humanitarian aid, there's a civilized way to organise and document shipments now.

Tom Nuttall @tomnutall
We interviewed Ukraine's foreign minister @DmytroKuleba:
- Some EU countries have developed "sanctions fatigue"
- Offensive/defensive weapons distinction is "artificial"
- "not overly optimistic" on peace talks
- Putin "literally doesn’t recognise the right of Ukraine to exist”

Ukraine existing is an threat to Russia in Putin's head...

Ijsbear · 23/03/2022 07:41

That's a neat and well organised site!

Two Ukrainians arrived last night to stay in our garden annex (unfortunate coincidence, that word). I was a bit nervous but they seem to be lovely, if unsettled and a bit skittish. Got to register them today.

Their dog is smaller than our cat!

DrBlackbird · 23/03/2022 07:42

Being told not to destroy buildings - it’s insanity. Unless we destroy everything and turn into dirt along with the civilians, nothing can happen

Ah so if true, they were told to keep buildings intact. It’s puzzled me why Putin wanted such a scorched earth policy. What use is a burnt out Ukraine to him. It seems that had not been his original intention then.

Natsku · 23/03/2022 07:44

Thanks for the new thread

How many refugees have got to Britain now? Have they made it any easier yet to get visas?
Over 10,000 have come to Finland already, the first lot of children started school this week, and university students have been offered free study places so they can keep up their studies while here.
And 21 luxury yachts have been seized from their winter storage in the ports here.

WeAreTheHeroes · 23/03/2022 07:47

That fits with the go in, overthrow the government and be welcomed by the population line it is believed they thought would happen @DrBlackbird

That's good of you to take them in (though yes, unfortunate word!). Do they get access to specialised help for refugees like help with registering at a GP and benefits or language courses or anything like that?
mpsw · 23/03/2022 07:48

I don't think the claims of frostbite can be true, as temperatures have consistently been several degrees above zero

And that undermines all the rest.

WeAreTheHeroes · 23/03/2022 07:49

@Ijsbear - hope you don't mind me asking, but how did you match with the Ukrainians who have been placed with you? If you'd rather pm me than answer here, please do.

You’re not alone in being suspicious.

There’s already been comment elsewhere that the whole of the tweet that contained the frostbite claimsis a bit “iffy”.

Not at night in the east it hasn't. It's dropped below freezing most nights.
RedToothBrush · 23/03/2022 07:55

James Longman @jamesaalongman
I spoke to a woman who said there were 25 checkpoints on her route out of Mariupol - 23 of them manned by Russian troops. At some, confused young Russian soldiers would ask why Ukraine was attacking Russia. At others, more senior soldiers would try and get her to go to the Donbas

I thought that, but after checking on windy.com the temperature does drop well below zero at night so it is possible. www.windy.com/-Temperature-temp?temp,2022032615,48.832,30.970,7

It has been around -5 at night.

You don't technically need below zero temperatures for a frostbite, long exposure even to a higher ambient temperature can lead to one.

StormzyinaTCup · 23/03/2022 07:59

Cold and/or wet feet can give you frostbite or trench foot if the conditions are right, which I would think they were.
