Warsaw Russian is letting out a lot of smoke - there has been no decision on who among them will be the next pontiff.

Biden is going there Friday

Is Boris Johnson the designated survivor?

Who the heck let me be in charge?

@MagicFox

Yes maybe, it's so weird how Shoigu appeared on that blipped video too
I don’t know, 2 years of working from home and using Teams has shown me technology is not to be trusted 😂 surprised there wasn’t someone on the call of whom our could only see up their nose

Interesting article about some cracks appearing in military discussion on Russian state TV.

I don't know, it wouldn't entirely surprise me if he was. Or, alternatively, has perhaps defected and it's being hushed up. Although I can't imagine it would be easy for him to defect.

Another tweet now on the same thread saying Shoigu daughter in mourning clothes... Although seems a bit of a leap.

wonderfullife123 · 25/03/2022 18:07

Not sure what's going wrong with my quote tweet attempts - that was re @homecomingKween post upthread.

Ukraine's military kills Russian colonel.

Russia’s colonel of the 810th Separate Guards Marine Brigade of the Black Sea Fleet Alexei Sharov was killed by a Ukrainian sniper, according to Russian authorities.

There is another one today: -

Ijsbear · 25/03/2022 18:14

There are questions on Ukranian media about him too. Apparently he was messing with his tie as if he'd only just tied it, which isn't normal for him; he was only there a few seconds and he didn't speak at all. One wonders if he's been removed from post and only wheeled out to show his silent face.

If all this is true and not just building something out of nothing, Putin must be really quite isolated by now.

shreddednips · 25/03/2022 18:17

This is quite an interesting article from the Daily Beast on Shoigu and his embezzling. Hopefully he's been busily pocketing the money intended to maintain Russia's nuclear arsenal too!

Leading news item

Main goal achieved now will focus on Donbas region

Seems significant now, hope it sticks although still awful for that region

Igotjelly · 25/03/2022 18:36

Wonder how Putin plans to tell the rest of his troops that they’ve achieved their objective given so far as I can tell communication has been zero up until now. Guess they’ll need to put it on the group WhatsApp

Autumnwater · 25/03/2022 18:40

Before I get shouted down and being a sympathiser I absolutely want to say that his war is abhorrent and I do not agree with anything the Russians are doing saying etc. however this on the bbc has not sat comfortably with me at all from the Ukrainian side…what is other peoples thoughts?

^ Dmytro Kuleba also said that Ukrainian would remain the country's only state language.

Russia has demanded protection for the Russian language in Ukraine. A significant minority of Ukrainians use Russian as their first language. ^

Ukrainian and Russian have been co-spoken in Ukraine for ... well, for a verrry long time.

In practise it's still going to be spoken. But from your quote, Ukrainian has always been the state language and there's been no problems with russian. The two languages overlap a great deal apart from anything else.

So I don't think anything will change. Ukrainian was the state language and still will be. If there is the possibility of Russian becoming a second state language then that is for the Ukrainian parliament to consider.

There was probably a great deal more chance of adopting Russian as a 2nd state language 5 weeks ago though. I wouldn't put 2 cents on it now.

If there are a lot of your countrymen in a closeby land and you want them to be accepted - invasion is really not the way to go about it.

I actually did pick up on that and felt a little uncomfortable. It’s clear that there are a portion of Ukrainians, however small, who consider themselves to be of Russian descent if nothing else and it feels to be somewhat denying their existence.
DGRossetti · 25/03/2022 18:56

So hours after intimations that China and India are calling for a ceasefire the Russians suddenly announce they've completed phase 1 (successfully) and are moving into phase 2 ?

What's it the Scottish say ... "Aye, did ye ?" ?????

Autumnwater · 25/03/2022 18:58

Igotjelly this is how I read it rather than the way ljsbear has explained. Hopefully it’s that’s way and not the way we took it! If it is our way then like I said that doesn’t sit well with me at all.

Igotjelly · 25/03/2022 18:59

Funny I hadn’t even thought of that, timing does seem coincidental at best. Can we assume that the utter bullshit in the Russian media about how much military equipment etc the Russian military have destroyed is to allow them to claim that they’ve successfully ‘demilitarised’ Ukraine for now
DGRossetti · 25/03/2022 19:01

I notice suggestions that Russias actions may have made a lot of smaller countries suddenly decide they want nuclear weapons. And to hell with the UN.

Igotjelly · 25/03/2022 19:02

Christ I’m Scottish and even our street signs have Gaelic translations, despite the fact the % of exclusively Gaelic speakers is negligible. I do actually have sympathy with Russian speaking Ukrainians wanting to protect what they consider to be a native Ukrainian language.

Except Scotland - and Wales - border a country that struggles with it's own language at times.

If the rumour trhat they are holders of the second and third suitcases, i would not expect them to be in the same location for security reasons for the exact reason i would not expect the Queen, Charles and William to share a plane flight.

And that's exactly what I was posting about, look what's not in the press, not just what's in it.

I wouldn't be very optimistic about those two.
