Warsaw Russian is letting out a lot of smoke - there has been no decision on who among them will be the next pontiff.

Biden is going there Friday

Is Boris Johnson the designated survivor?

Who the heck let me be in charge?

Of course our media does similar. Sky news reporting that US are planning for an attack on NATO soil. What was really said was that there was contingency planning underway in case of that happening - no shit! And far more nuanced than the headline would have you believe.

Good.

Breaking news on the BBC news website is that the Russian Defence Ministry says Russia will now focus on 'liberating' Donbas, potentially suggesting that Russia is downgrading its war aims.

elephantmarchingin · 25/03/2022 14:12

'The chief of the Russian army says Russia will now focus its main war effort on the "complete liberation" of the eastern Ukrainian Donbas region.
The defence ministry said Russia had been considering two options for its "special military operation" - one covering the whole of Ukraine and one focusing on the Donbas.
The comments - carried by Russian state news agencies - hinted at a possible downgrading of Russia's war aims. Russian forces have met strong resistance in the north of Ukraine and around Kyiv.' On BBC

Is this a start of the end?

...or the end of the start?

Either way, I hope, and wish, and maybe even pray (not a pray-er) that is the start of the end. Though I don't trust it to be just yet.

Goldenbear · 25/03/2022 14:15

I pray to God that it is!

I struggle to get excited. It may well be the beginning of the end of this shit show but lots of Ukrainian people still reside (or previously resided) in those areas. For them this hell will languish and will potentially lose international attention - the result of which could be even worse for them.

So do I. This is a desperate hope of mine!

If this war has taught us (as individuals) anything, it's where we sit vs. the Kantian Trolley Problem: 1000wordphilosophy.com/2014/06/09/introduction-to-deontology-kantian-ethics/#:~:text=%E2%80%9CTrolley%20problems%E2%80%9D%20are%20philosophical%20thought,run%20over%20by%20a%20trolley.

Televised music benefit on itv might help keep Ukraine at the top of the news for more people for a while longer. Lots of fund raising going on up and down the UK and hopefully there'll be a big pot now that will sustain recovery for a while 🙏 Because yes, inevitably perhaps, momentum will diminish before too long if Russia backs off soon, although difficult to imagine that happening given Ukraine is (understandably) adamant about not surrendering territory.

There is still a place for utilitarianism, surely ?

I've said this to DH the whole time but was too worried to post it on here!

Putin is now comparing his struggle to J K Rowling.

Fucking bell-end.

Well if Boris can compare it to Brexit, who are we to criticize Putin ?
Igotjelly · 25/03/2022 14:46

@TargusEasting it does lend itself to the argument that Putin is actually fairly aware of what’s going on in the rest of the World. His reference to ‘cancel culture’ isn’t one I can imagine he would use if he was in a silo focussed only on Russia.

Also that does rather underscore the megalomania involve where Putin casts himself as Russia personified ...

It also poisons Google, but that's a given these days.

TargusEasting · 25/03/2022 14:53

He is very aware. Some of his interviews show that. I remember the clip with his cabinet, where he rebuked a member for suggesting the could export pork to Indonesia.

Also that does rather underscore the megalomania involve where Putin casts himself as Russia personified

Which in my view is the reason why he will not give the approval to fire a nuclear weapon. Russia is everything.

Igotjelly · 25/03/2022 14:54

If and when this slips out of the headlines and out of public consciousness I wonder how quickly the sanctions will be eased and businesses will get back into bed with Russia.

Probably can't come soon enough.
Natsku · 25/03/2022 14:58

I hope it is the beginning of the end if Russia is shifting its focus. How big is the population in the Donbas area? Could they absorbed into the rest of Ukraine like when Russia took Karelia?

Has the Chancellor and his business links got out of bed with Russia?

That’s a stretch and a half. Maybe he is genuinely mad.
