Oh, Nazanin. How dignified you are.

Just seen a clip of the press conference she gave. How generous of her to share it with the daughter of a man still trapped in Iran.

How composed and articulate she is. Honestly, with so many fucking idiots in power, how do we keep the faith in the face of what happened to Nazanin.

That job used to be a big hitter type role- Howe, Major, Hurd, Rifkind, Cook, Straw, Beckett, David Miliband….

How low we have sunk - "Global Britain" as represented on the world stage by Liz "pork markets" Truss and her insta-selfies.

SueSaid · 23/03/2022 12:22

'How low we have sunk - "Global Britain" as represented on the world stage by Liz "pork markets" Truss and her insta-selfies.'

Awful misogyny.

She got NZR home. Stop with the belitting crap about selfies.

"Stop with the belitting crap about selfies"
Yes, I wish she would. They are no substitute for talent, integrity or character.

Thoosa · 23/03/2022 12:43

@Rummikub

What exactly did FS do to secure release?

I find it interesting and shocking that other hostages didn’t get publicity to support release. Because they were too brown? And richard was more palatable.

I must admit I’d assumed it was less to do with RR, and more to do with the fact that NZR is stunningly beautiful, photogenic, and a mother to a small child, which the male detainees weren’t.

Maybe it’s a bit of both, though.

SueSaid · 23/03/2022 12:47

'Yes, I wish she would. They are no substitute for talent, integrity or character.'

What makes you think she doesn't have 'talent, integrity or character'? Is it of no interest to you that she was the FS in post when negotiations succeeded in repatriating NZR?

You think her alleged 'selfies' are more relevant. Riiiiight.

Roussette · 23/03/2022 12:49

Stop with the belitting crap about selfies

No.
She's taken 700, one every 5 hours during working hours. It's pathetic. She needs to get on and do her job as opposed to selfies and pics whilst pitching for the PM post. And repayment of the debt got NZR home.

I might not have agreed with the likes of Douglas Hurd, Geoffrey Howe and Major, but by god I had some respect for them. Truss... no. I think she is totally out of her depth to be honest.

eldora · 23/03/2022 12:51

Why are you so protective of Liz, @JaniieJones?

You've been consistently awful about Nazanin but as soon as blond, white Liz is attacked you rear up.

SueSaid · 23/03/2022 12:54

Where have a been 'persistently' awful? I have stated reasonably that the villains were Iran and the FO if not thanked should have been acknowledged for their efforts in repatriating her.

Roussette · 23/03/2022 13:00

If anyone took 6 years to do a job, they'd be sacked. I'm surprised how restrained she was

SueSaid · 23/03/2022 13:01

'as soon as blond, white Liz is attacked you rear up.'
I'd have said the same if Priti Patel or Rishi were FS. Nothing to do with hair colour but it is typical that here and on sm some are desperate to reduce it to a race issue.

JassyRadlett · 23/03/2022 13:17

Stop with the belitting crap about selfies.

You're right, it's inaccurate.

We should call them posed vanity PR pictures taken by a professional photographer to promote herself at the taxpayers' expense.

Primarily to pitch for PM if BJ goes.
And to look important of course. And regal. The one at Chequers with the world globe is a hoot

longwayoff · 23/03/2022 14:26

Quick to offend and even quicker to take offence. Interesting how MN permits Nazanin and her family, her motives, her lack of apparent gratitude to be dragged around this thread, insults abounding, without interruption yet quote a poster's own words and it can't be tolerated by moderators. Fascinating.

Roussette · 23/03/2022 15:48

This is a lovely thread. Behind the scenes Tulip Siddiq and the Zaghari-Ratcliffe family.

That's lovely, thanks Rousette.

EthelTheAardvark · 23/03/2022 17:17

Fascinating how, in some people's book, criticising a female Home Secretary is misogynist but criticising a female former captive isn't.

JassyRadlett · 23/03/2022 17:27

@EthelTheAardvark

Only funny if you don't understand context or are so obtuse that you ignore that it's the manner of criticism that's talked about.

It's quite hard not to see 'but she disrespected her husband! By disagreeing with him! In public!' as being based in some quite sexist notions of a woman's proper role. And of course the idea that women should just be grateful for whatever crumbs they've been given, and not have the temerity to demand better, is very well-trodden over the decades.

Equally, there are definitely some criticisms of Priti Patel I've seen that are misogynistic. But there are plenty of others I've seen that are quite objective and based solely on her actions, in a similar way to criticisms of male Home Secretaries.

JassyRadlett · 23/03/2022 17:28

Sorry, 'fascinating' rather than 'funny'. It's neither fascinating nor funny.

longwayoff · 23/03/2022 17:43

It's odd how the understanding of nuance is rapidly vanishing from any public discourse. Very depressing.

LizBennet · 23/03/2022 17:48

Really is longwayoff.

'Fascinating how, in some people's book, criticising a female Home Secretary is misogynist but criticising a female former captive isn't.'

It's tone and context isn't it. Very basic really. So for example you can criticise whomever you like, everyone's actions are up for critique as we live in a free country. Once you resort to mocking and sneery comments it veers into misogyny.

Roussette · 23/03/2022 19:28

I've seen A LOT of sneery comments even on here about Nazanin

I don’t know why you keep bleating on about a free country.

You’ve done nothing for this country, there is nothing for you to be proud in making this a free country.

EthelTheAardvark · 23/03/2022 22:57

Oh, come off it. Mockery is always misogynist or misandrist, is it? It can never be because the person being mocked is guilty of behaviour that thoroughly deserves mockery?
