Oh, Nazanin. How dignified you are.

Just seen a clip of the press conference she gave. How generous of her to share it with the daughter of a man still trapped in Iran.

How composed and articulate she is. Honestly, with so many fucking idiots in power, how do we keep the faith in the face of what happened to Nazanin.

'Twitter is such a bear pit'

Exactly. A small number of people spouting abuse, not worth getting worked up about.

I wonder if Anoosheh Ashoori will hold any press conferences blaming foreign secretaries for securing his release.

It's so depressing, the mindset of the Brexiteer Little Englanders.

Pathetic. Even if the British government were unquestionably beyond reproach in this situation and she was being unfair, I cannot imagine criticising the reactions of someone who has just emerged out of six years of unjust imprisonment and maltreatment. If you can’t cut someone some slack under those circumstances, when can you? Empathy bypass springs to mind.

And of course we know the government did not cover themselves with glory here.

As for the repeated ‘but the Iranians were at fault, not us’ - how ludicrously simplistic.

LizBennet · 22/03/2022 12:45

@Saucery

Is that a Twitter that, like, goes to another school, so we won’t know him?
That's the one. And he doesn't come on MN so you'll just have to believe it.
Peregrina · 22/03/2022 12:54

I think they were pretty invisible in his case. We had never heard of him until he was released. His family had to stump up some money at the last minute to gain his freedom. So he might well be asking Foreign Secretary, what's that? Do they have them in the UK?

As for Truss - yes she might have helped but knowing her, it was also an opportunity for a selfie - look here I am on a tank, here I am in Moscow, here's me single handedly getting Nazanin released.

Saucery · 22/03/2022 12:58

The British govt repeatedly told Elika Ashoori to shut up and stop making a fuss.
Also, the media didn’t find his cause or family very ‘relatable’ www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/mar/18/anoosheh-ashoori-daughter-tells-of-struggle-to-publicise-plight
I do only remember Ch4 News interviewing her and maybe the Today programme?

So what Nazanin is having flung at her her now is a version of that. Racist twats gonna be racist twats 🤷‍♀️

Saucery · 22/03/2022 13:01

The British govt tried to tell Richard Ratcliffe to shut up and go away, too, but he wouldn’t and the media found him more ‘relatable’ for obvious reasons.
The families do seem to have formed a strong bond through all of this, however.

nitsandwormsdodger · 22/03/2022 13:03

I think it boasts well for her marriage that she can disagree with her husband after being a hostage in a sexist oppressive regime for 6 years

The reason she was a hostage was the foreign secs so no I don’t think she owes any gratitude to them it was THEIR JOB to get her out as one in particular had made things v much worse for her.

Indeed, it is horrifying, Fortunately, a lot of the tweets using the hashtag are saying exactly that, but I wish they wouldn't give it oxygen.
Roussette · 22/03/2022 13:32

Michael Spicer covers it nicely. And covers some of the posts on here too. (like... doesn't she look well. How dare anyone say that. They just want her snivelling, stick thin and grateful)

Quote from the article:

“A chilling report compiled by independent investigators and seen by the Times revealed last year the detail of Nazanin’s treatment during her detention. She spent almost nine months in solitary confinement. She was bombarded with bright lights and blaring televisions to deprive her of sleep, while enduring daily interrogations of eight to nine hours. She was chained to a bed for seven days, blindfolded and handcuffed, put in stress positions, subject to sensory overload. She was told that she would never see her baby daughter again, that her husband had left her, and threatened that she would be buried alive if she did not cooperate.“

She can be as angry and ‘ungrateful’ as she fucking well likes.

@JaniieJones and @Yeahthat don't seem to have much to say in response to this which is odd given you can't shut them up usually.
ScribblingPixie · 22/03/2022 21:58

I don't suppose those conditions would even be unusually harsh for Iranian prisoners - legal representation can be denied until investigation is complete and there's huge emphasis on confession in trials however it's achieved. Not exactly the human rights capital of the world.

Peregrina · 22/03/2022 22:17

That sounds very much like some WW2 prisoners endured in Far Eastern captivity. Some managed to rise above it, but many must have been totally damaged. I can't imagine what must be going through her head right now.I hope for the whole families sake that she can manage not to let herself be poisoned by bitterness.

@JaniieJones only wants to focus on the last couple of years when she was under house arrest, and forget about the reality of the inhumane treatment she received in prison. You have to wonder about the motivation of those who seek to minimise what she suffered whilst our foreign secretaries came and went.

Wow, the Daily Heil seems to have a real hard-on for wanting even British born people to be grateful for living in the UK.

Amanda Platell sounds like a knobhead. She wasn’t born in the UK but yet doesn’t have to show a smidgen of gratitude due to her skin colour I guess,

AnyFucker · 23/03/2022 05:29

And hasnt Marina's article and the revolting Fail and snipey comments on here shown up the divides in this country

Fuck off with the 'show some gratitude" line

What....show some gratitude for not paying an owed debt and only doing it now even though this woman was imprisoned over there and doing it now so we can beg for oil
Or be grateful for 5 useless FSs who were incapable of, or didn't want to even try to secure her release

And where was Truss when Richard was on hunger strike in the freezing cold close to the HoC and getting more ill by the day?
Nowhere to be seen

Be grateful? No
Why should she
