Oh, Nazanin. How dignified you are.

Just seen a clip of the press conference she gave. How generous of her to share it with the daughter of a man still trapped in Iran.

How composed and articulate she is. Honestly, with so many fucking idiots in power, how do we keep the faith in the face of what happened to Nazanin.

"Gratitude for foreign secretaries who worked tirelessly"? hahahahahahaha

Gonnagetgoing · 21/03/2022 14:33

She’s great and I was surprised at a few questions (as was she).

It’ll be interesting to see her next move. I personally think she’d be great on TV or reporting for eg a newspaper but not sure if that’s what she wants to do.

ScrambledSmegs · 21/03/2022 14:33

I believe she categorically cannot criticise the Iranian regime due to fear of reprisals on her family who live in Iran.

SueSaid · 21/03/2022 14:33

'Back in your box now Janiie. No one is rewriting history on this one, however hard you try.'

I've just watched the clip! I'm not rewriting history she disagreed with Richard and refused to thank the foreign secretary saying how many foreign secretaries did it take to secure her release. Well guess what as many as it would take until the Iranian govt agreed! They are the villains here, not the foreign office.

LizBennet · 21/03/2022 14:33

"Gratitude" 🙄

thebellsesmereldathebells · 21/03/2022 14:34

Her parents are still in Iran, at the mercy of the Iranian government, so she may be exercising restraint at this point.

As for thanking successive Home Secretaries - pull the other one. She should be suing Boris Johnson for his monumental negligence, because it led directly to years of additional imprisonment for her.

It was absolutely typical of Boris Johnson - he hadn't done his homework, didn't have an adequate grasp of the nuances of the case, and shot his big mouth off anyway. Doing that as Foreign Secretary has enormous consequences for people's lives. It's like putting a toddler in charge of a kalashnikov.

ScrambledSmegs · 21/03/2022 14:34

@JaniieJones

A bit of gratitude for the foreign secretaries who worked tirelessly to secure her freedom and some condemnation of the Iranian govt who were actually responsible would have been nice.
Grin oh now you're being silly
Gonnagetgoing · 21/03/2022 14:34

I think she’s angry re certain foreign ministers (looking at you Boris) who completely fucked up and meant she spent far more time in prison.

Gonnagetgoing · 21/03/2022 14:35

Some questions were very stupid though, of course she’s not rushing back to Iran to see her parents!

SueSaid · 21/03/2022 14:36

Indeed.

A dignified 'I thank everyone involved in my release' would have surely been justified in view of how much Truss has pushed this. Richard firmly told told no, she wouldn't thank the Foreign secretary.

LizDoingTheCanCan · 21/03/2022 14:38

The government do not deserve her gratitude.

You can always send Truss a card Janiie, should you feel so strongly about it. Maybe some cheese and wine?

Saucery · 21/03/2022 14:39

The FSs have been at best, ineffectual, at worst, well…..Johnson. I’m sure the wheels of diplomacy have been turning relentlessly on this in the background but it hasn’t been driven by Truss, Hunt etc. She can ‘show gratitude’ to whoever she wants. Or not.

TokyoSushi · 21/03/2022 14:42

She's wonderful, I think she'll go on to do great things!

Why would I send her a card?! Confused

However, if I had been detained in Iran, a country known for taking political hostages I would perhaps have used the briefing as an oppotunity to publicly thank the those including the FS who had secured my release.

What a weird press conference. She looks very well though that must be a huge relief for her family.

pollyannaperspective · 21/03/2022 14:51

JanieJones perhaps just be thankful that you weren't the one taken hostage. You get to tell someone what they should do, if you have stood in their shoes.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 21/03/2022 14:51

So funny when people are so sure they know how they'd act in an entirely hypothetical (to them) situation.

TebayOrNotTebay · 21/03/2022 14:58

She is very impressive and articulate.
(THANK the FS? Sue them more like!)

Bipbopbee · 21/03/2022 14:58

Completely agree OP

'perhaps just be thankful that you weren't the one taken hostage. You get to tell someone what they should do, if you have stood in their shoes.'

If I had I would say (in my hypothetical press conference) that I was relieved to be home and understood it wasn't the number of foreign secretaries that was the problem, rather the regime they were negotiating with.

jowly · 21/03/2022 15:04

Have only seen her wearing blue and yellow too.

Saucery · 21/03/2022 15:07

It’s a strange hobby…..watching Press Conferences and imagining what you’d say if you were up there……
Cycling, yoga, building St Paul’s Cathedral out of matchsticks would all be preferable, you’d think. Hmm
