Oh, Nazanin. How dignified you are.

Just seen a clip of the press conference she gave. How generous of her to share it with the daughter of a man still trapped in Iran.

How composed and articulate she is. Honestly, with so many fucking idiots in power, how do we keep the faith in the face of what happened to Nazanin.

@EndaDay

Tulip must be talking through her arse then!
Nope, didn’t say that. I said ‘from her perspective’ .Other perspectives are available Smile
EndaDay · 22/03/2022 08:51

That's great that you acknowledge that there are different perspectives-just as some think Nazanin is dignified and others think she is not.

Ain't life complicated and rarely black and white!

emuloc · 22/03/2022 08:58

@JanisMoplin

People who say her parents should have met her in another country have no idea how difficult it is for brown and black people to even get tourist visas. It involves huge amounts of paperwork and expense including bank statements letters from employers property deeds I have just done all this to get my mother a tourist visa to come see me. It took months and cost a huge amount. Must be even harder for Iranians. Britons simply do not realise passport privilege. POC are assumed to be terrorists and restricted from travel.

As for what Nazanin says to Richard, it is none of our fucking business.

This. Well said.
heldinadream · 22/03/2022 09:18

@Saucery

Tulip Siddiq has indeed been outstanding. We need more politicians like her. She is entitled to thank who she likes from the perspective of working tirelessly at this end to secure the release of British people from Iran. And NZR is equally entitled not to thank anyone she doesn’t feel thankful to, without being told to shut up and go away.
THIS!

I can't believe people are actually criticising Nazanin. Go spend 6 years - SIX YEARS - in an Iranian jail with no hope of ever seeing the outside world again and ripped away from your precious family, your precious tiny daughter FFS - and then come back and maybe, just maybe, you can level criticism at someone else who's been in the same boat.
She's absolutely entitled to say anything she fucking likes and not say anything she likes. And I'm sure she's extremely mindful of the fact that her parents are still in Iran. Jeez.

SpaghettiNotCourgetti · 22/03/2022 09:37

Some posters here really covering themselves in glory. It must be really hard not typing 'She wasn't even born here!' every time.

I think she's well within her rights to criticise our government, seeing as she's a UK citizen. I criticise it all the time. Why should she be crawlingly grateful that the FO finally did their job and got her out of that situation, after making it substantially worse for her?

And what's this crap about not criticising the UK because she can't criticise Iran? The UK's big and tough enough to take it - that's what being a reasonably healthy democracy means. Foreign governments being touchy is no reason to accept whatever shit ours flings at its citizens without demur, FFS.

Peregrina · 22/03/2022 09:57

When talking about the debt that the UK has owed to Iran, they seem to forget that the Shah of Iran wasn't some nice cuddly guy either. He just happened to front a regime much more acceptable to the US and UK than the Ayatollah's did when they took over. Hence the tanks not being supplied and the debt arising.

EthelTheAardvark · 22/03/2022 10:07

@JaniieJones

'You seem very invested in her shutting up and going away'

Oh no I'm happy to hear her story. However as I said if she can't/won't criticise the regime responsible for her incarceration then perhaps she shouldn't be criticising the foreign office for taking too long to secure her release, as if they were just sat shuffling papers and twiddling their thumbs for 6yrs.

Seems an odd stance particularly as her family who have actually witnessed what has been involved have voiced their thanks. However as has been pointed out I haven't been detained in a foreign country for 6yrs so I'd perhaps project too.

She's not criticising civil servants in the Foreign Office, she is criticising the government which went through 5 foreign secretaries in 6 years, and the foreign secretaries themselves. One foreign secretary in particular managed to hand Iran an excuse for lengthening her captivity through utter laziness and stupidity.

As has been demonstrated on this thread, the excuses about sanctions just won't wash, and the reality is that ultimately the government didn't want to repay its debt to Iran until it reached the point when it needed to mend relations with Iran for the sake of securing oil supplies. The government could have ended her incarceration a long time ago.

Peregrina · 22/03/2022 10:40

I think she's got a point - it ought to be one of the great offices of the state, not some minor department where incompetents are put out to grass.

Then the money order should not have been accepted.

You think BoJo is cuddly, going around the world. begging for oil?

How is she not dignified?
Peregrina · 22/03/2022 11:29

Then the money order should not have been accepted.

Can you explain what you mean? Either the UK supplied the tanks, or gave the money back. It's not the UK accepting a money order from Iran.

You think BoJo is cuddly, going around the world. begging for oil?

Nowhere have I said that, but it's a might fine co-incidence that when we find we need oil, we suddenly remember a 43 year old debt needs paying.

You can’t agree to supply tanks and then back out because the recipient isn’t cuddly enough.
eldora · 22/03/2022 11:31

Back out and keep the money, that is. Either you supply the tanks or you refund the money.

Peregrina · 22/03/2022 11:33

You can’t agree to supply tanks and then back out because the recipient isn’t cuddly enough.

That is what we did though, but for cuddly, read it as a shorthand for 'politically acceptable to the UK and US'.

TabithaTittlemouse · 22/03/2022 11:49

I thought that she was amazing. Very dignified and strong. I can’t imagine many people handling this the way she has.

JanisMoplin · 22/03/2022 12:10

We must have different Twitter pages I can't see this at all. 'Nazanin' is trending, can't see any 'cow' comments.

Though tbh I wouldn't get too bothered by what anyone says on Twitter you don't need many posts to get anything trending. Amanda holden is 'trending' with 1400 comments.

ScribblingPixie · 22/03/2022 12:28

Twitter is such a bear pit. Those hashtag threads this morning are a horrible mix of truly nasty people, political activists using Nazanin as a stick to beat the government, dim supporters repeating the hashtag (why? you're making it trend & adding to the hurt) and lots of bots - some Russian, I'm guessing as you wouldn't want to miss this opportunity to stoke discord.

Saucery · 22/03/2022 12:30

Know what, with all she’s been through and with the dignity of her stance yesterday, I doubt she would give the tiniest shit about no-marks on here or Twitter shouting spiteful nonsense. A section of the population hate women, hate non-British women, hate anyone who tries to bump them out of their cosy little racist cocoon. So let them spout their crap, it makes no difference and can only make them more unhappy in the end.

DuncinToffee · 22/03/2022 12:33

'ungrateful cow' is trending together with Nazanin, 'Iranian' and 'send her back' but keep denying it Janiie

Roussette · 22/03/2022 12:33

I agree. What a dignified woman and well done her for not bowing and scraping to FSs. She's had 6 years of her life taken away from her, 6 years of missing seeing her DD growing up.

It's going to be hard for her to slot back into her daughter's life, that's for sure.
I thought her interview was dignified and spot on. I doubt I could've kept my cool like she did.

Especially attractive non-British women. It really pisses them off.

Imagine they will be even more pissed off when she writes a book.

As for the "different Twitter pages" comment, well....

Is that a Twitter that, like, goes to another school, so we won’t know him?
