Oh, Nazanin. How dignified you are.

Just seen a clip of the press conference she gave. How generous of her to share it with the daughter of a man still trapped in Iran.

How composed and articulate she is. Honestly, with so many fucking idiots in power, how do we keep the faith in the face of what happened to Nazanin.

I think if I'd been incarcerated in a jail unnecessarily, I wouldn't be showing my gratitude hen for years it appeared no one was doing anything to secure my release.

Debt paid, she gets released. Funny that

Rummikub · 23/03/2022 08:34

Isn’t it just!

longwayoff · 23/03/2022 08:36

Presumably, janiiejones, you're not in a position to comment on how 6 years unnecessary detention would affect your capacity for anger nor how you would direct it. Nazanin is, and she's entitled to feel how she feels without derogatory comment about her or her family.

Kitkat151 · 23/03/2022 08:43

@JaniieJones

A bit of gratitude for the foreign secretaries who worked tirelessly to secure her freedom and some condemnation of the Iranian govt who were actually responsible would have been nice.
You’re fucking joking aren’t you?🙄
longwayoff · 23/03/2022 08:46

No, she's not joking, just poking liberals with a stick as usual.

Saucery · 23/03/2022 08:52

There’s just no reasoning with people who are arguing against the words they actually wrote themselves Hmm
It does get dull after a while, but I presume they get something out of it.
Never mind, their words are there for everyone to see Smile

Saucery · 23/03/2022 08:53

It’s more like someone waving a pillow at you from half a mile away. Grin
EthelTheAardvark · 23/03/2022 08:57

Particularly those with dual nationalities. Again, this is well known and should have been a consideration before going on holiday to a country run by a totalitarian regime who take hostages.

None of this is the fault of the FO

This was well known, the FO did nothing about it at the time, but they're not at fault? Despite the fact that protecting British citizens abroad is literally one of their responsibilities? And despite the fact that they acknowledge that the debt to Iran was properly owed to them?

And do stop depicting this as Nazanin choosing to go off for a jolly holiday, she was going to visit her family with her young child.

Well no i can't get inside anyone's head

And yet, @JaniieJones, you purport to tell us what you would have done in her situation. Do at least try to be consistent.

eldora · 23/03/2022 09:02

@cakeorwine

Not her fault, Iran's fault. None of this is the fault of the FO. The whole thing has been twisted into a bizarre blame the gov witch hunt with people like Hyde typically jumping on the bandwagon

You will have read that Former Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt has said that it took too long

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-60832188?

Mr Hunt, who was foreign secretary between July 2018 and July 2019, told BBC Radio 4's Today programme he did "everything I could" in his role to secure their release but "it took too long".

While he said the "primary responsibility" for their detention lay with Iran, the Conservative MP added: "I think we all have to say 'could we have done it faster?' And I think the answer is we could have."

However, he praised Foreign Secretary Liz Truss and the Foreign Office for negotiating the pair's release, describing it as "an extraordinary achievement".

I wonder if you are capable of empathy and can get inside the head of someone who has faced what Nazanin has for the last 6 years.

Are you capable of that?

@JaniieJones the UK detained THREE Iranian men in 2013 who came to speak to the government about the debt owed to Iran.

The UK didn’t want to pay its debt and Iran saw its nationals unlawfully detained.

So yes, the UK is very much to blame.

TypicaIMe · 23/03/2022 09:10

@JaniieJones why do you keep insisting that she should adjust in private? What if she doesn't want to? Will you judge her for that as well as not being grateful enough?

eldora · 23/03/2022 09:15

None of that excuses Iran’s taking NZR hostage but the UK is to blame too.

RancidRuby · 23/03/2022 09:15

@JaniieJones

'I wonder if you are capable of empathy and can get inside the head of someone who has faced what Nazanin has for the last 6 years.-

Well no i can't get inside anyone's head. I'm sorry for everything she endured but I can also recognise it was an incredibly complex situation with a dictatorship calling the shots not the apparently hapless 5 foreign secretaries.

I hope they take the time to have some privacy and get Gabriella out of the public eye. The recent footage of her squirming and not looking remotely happy were uncomfortable to see.

Slagging off their parenting skills now, are you? Just when I thought you couldn't get any lower, despicable.

Denigrating Nazanin and making claims about the state of her marriage clearly wasn't enough.

Anyone would think that you just don't like Nazanin very much, Janiie.

Roussette · 23/03/2022 09:23

AFAIC any woman who has been incarcerated for six years, undergone hunger strikes, had to sleep in the same clothes for months, deprived of all the natural light, a hole for a toilet, intense interrogations, illness and no meds and no idea how long that hell will go on.... that woman can behave exactly how she wants now she's out.

(yes I know the last two years have been under house arrest, I'm talking about the first four years)

Peregrina · 23/03/2022 09:24

No, it's just that she appears to be a member of a sect which worships the current Government. If this had happened under a Labour administration, and the person rescued had criticised the turnover in Foreign Secs as being a factor in the delayed release, she would be fully in agreement. IMO.

TypicaIMe · 23/03/2022 09:49

My post was deleted, so I'll just repeat the pertinent part of it:

Perhaps Janiie should stop telling people whose experiences she cannot possibly understand how they ought to behave.

SueSaid · 23/03/2022 10:02

@Typicalme. Fortunately we don't live in a dictatorship we live in a free country so we are allowed to voice our opinions. We don't have to agree, but that is ok.

I wish the family well, also to the pp suggesting I'm criticising anyone's parenting skills I am rather pointing out in the recent footage of Gabriella she is looking increasingly uncomfortable. Yes it is just my opinion however I think an 8yr old's privacy should be protected it just doesn't seem right the amount of exposure she is getting.

You've admitted you have no way of knowing how Nazanin feels. Equally you have no way of knowing how Gabriella feels. Maybe her parents know more about her than you do?

DowningStreetParty · 23/03/2022 11:11

That’s a brilliant article by Marina Hyde! I’d forgotten how clever and funny she is.

Amanda Platell is notorious within her columnist genre. When not being a journalist, she worked as a spin doctor for the UK Conservative party. I can only imagine how she’ll write about the Foreign secs issue. Hmm

That job used to be a big hitter type role- Howe, Major, Hurd, Rifkind, Cook, Straw, Beckett, David Miliband…. Then we got William Hague, Philip Hammond, Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt! Confused Followed by Raab and Truss.

Peregrina · 23/03/2022 11:49

That job used to be a big hitter type role- Howe, Major, Hurd, Rifkind, Cook, Straw, Beckett, David Miliband….

And for a country which pretends to be a Global leader, it still ought to be. Instead for incumbent we have people whose only talent is shouting BREXIT as loud as they can, or in Liz Truss's case, posing for selfies.

longwayoff · 23/03/2022 11:49

It's a bloody shallow pool isn't it? God help us all.

TebayOrNotTebay · 23/03/2022 12:14

Oh sure you do, Janiie Hmm
